Winter 2010/2011

I'm not quite sure what the benefit is in reading into this monthly forecasts too much, they can't even get the next day right half the time so I generally take them with a pinch of salt.

Starting to get a bit chilly up here in Newcastle, getting out of bed is hard enough already without it being freezing :(

Also, starting to find that my hands are going numb during the walk from flat to uni, which signals a gloves purchase (which is ultimately pointless as I will loose them anyways :()

thats cold :)

It is indeed. We went for a 10 minute walk around the village at 8am that morning and everywhere the birds was practically dead. They sat on fences and wouldn't even move unless you got within touching distances. Sometimes they wouldn't move at all. Felt sorry for them. Was going to bring some home to warm them up but doubt it was a good idea.

Snow at Christmas would be nice but any time before and after that will be ****. It's always fun at first but then it starts stopping you and others from doing things.

Had a few dustings already. Hopefully not long until we get some proper snow now:

Seems cold outside but not that cold I was in my shorts before when I went to the village, I got some funny looks, wind chill was harsh.

Is it normal for you to get snow in October??

Looks as if its going to be a really cold winter. Right im off to hunt for some jumpers now :p

This thread has got me worried.. I got stranded in Bruges/Brussels last year due to the snow (Eurostar train broke down) and I seriously thought I was gonna die from being so cold :o

Can't believe that so many of you are hoping for more snow... Snow is fun for a day or two, but if it's anything like last year or even worse then it's not going to be fun when you can't get to work or even go out to buy food.
The roads get all slushy and slippery, and people who attempt to drive risk crashing into things or even people :/

For large corporate companies - yeah it's no biggie to close to office for a day or two and employees get to take a day off or work from home. But I think it'll affect the small businesses/self employed if they had to stop business for more than a day.

Natural disasters / freak weather really worries me :(

I've read the 'crank' posts and theories, and i've also spent a little time reading about and understanding the weather models.
- The first point used, lowest solar activity in years, now I am very interested in solar activity, always have been, its not low, its actually picking up again for the past 6 months, and currently theirs all kinds of interesting filaments and sunspots crackling and shooting out promanences (something associated with increased solar output). spaceweather.com [check it out] Although there has been a theory suggested recently that solar minima actually can cause a rise in light radiation rather than UV radiation and a warming effect, we are in an already established start of maxima.
- El Nina, opposite of El Nino, causes sea temps to cool in the southern hemisphere, so yes it can get cold, but apparently its effect on europe isnt as well understood, likely the weather will be drier here.
- Actual weather predictions predict a below average by -0.5-1.5 temp range, we could be in for a cold one perhaps, but last year we had extreme drops.
- the gulf stream is slowing. I think although this may be happening, i can't see any real proof, just a few dodgy grainy GIFs, if someone can back this up with a real peer-reviewed scientific study then that would be great, until then i call BS!

Thing is no weather model could have predicted a huge high pressure of cold air coming down from the north pole over north europe, weather is more complicated and unpredictable, and its more than just a "oh the general trend is for x to happen". It can swing widly from unsettled, wet, cold, dry, mild etc, just on pressure systems movement around.

To be fair he does live in the Scottish Highlands, hundreds of miles from you.

Every October, the Tioga Pass in California is closed to traffic for the rest of the winter because of heavy snow.

250 miles away, people sit on the beach in bikinis :p

Not had any really cold weather yet so I'm a bit reserved myself on it being a harsh winter.

Could come out of nowhere though, last winter did..

Personally hoping for lots of heavy snow, I'm still a kid at heart.

I must admit I was impressed how well our family van coped in the snow last year. Most the weight is up front so the back tended to slide a bit more. The only time tme it did was in a very quite area and I was on my own. I must admit I really enjoyed it and couldn't stop grinning for a while :)

Still rather not have to deal with it for more than a few days though.
