Winter 2010/2011

I think the only bad thing about winter is all the moaning, drama and pretending its one stage away from an apocalypse we always get.

Oh no we are doomed etc.

I've read the 'crank' posts and theories, and i've also spent a little time reading about and understanding the weather models.
- The first point used, lowest solar activity in years, now I am very interested in solar activity, always have been, its not low, its actually picking up again for the past 6 months, and currently theirs all kinds of interesting filaments and sunspots crackling and shooting out promanences (something associated with increased solar output). spaceweather.com [check it out] Although there has been a theory suggested recently that solar minima actually can cause a rise in light radiation rather than UV radiation and a warming effect, we are in an already established start of maxima.
- El Nina, opposite of El Nino, causes sea temps to cool in the southern hemisphere, so yes it can get cold, but apparently its effect on europe isnt as well understood, likely the weather will be drier here.
- Actual weather predictions predict a below average by -0.5-1.5 temp range, we could be in for a cold one perhaps, but last year we had extreme drops.
- the gulf stream is slowing. I think although this may be happening, i can't see any real proof, just a few dodgy grainy GIFs, if someone can back this up with a real peer-reviewed scientific study then that would be great, until then i call BS!

Thing is no weather model could have predicted a huge high pressure of cold air coming down from the north pole over north europe, weather is more complicated and unpredictable, and its more than just a "oh the general trend is for x to happen". It can swing widly from unsettled, wet, cold, dry, mild etc, just on pressure systems movement around.

Actually last year wasn't that extreme, there was only a degree or so drop in average temperature for the month and below average rainfall.

As for the gulf stream slowing I'm sure I was told that by my lecturers a couple of years ago, I'll have a quick peek for a paper or two in a bit. :)

I reckon that we are going to have a long, cold, hard winter up here. We have already had the coldest summer i have ever experienced. Never had to stick the heating on in July before even if it was only a couple of times. The heating has been on since the begining of September now, that's 6 weeks earlier than last year. We had our first frost in September, also way earlier than usual, and our first snow on the ground yesterday, last year was 12th November. Temperatures last week averaged 6.8 degrees and so far this week we have'nt been over 4.7 degrees. It's going to be a bad one but as usual, up here we just get on with it.

There have been snow flurries for the past couple of days in Aberdeenshire, yesterday the worst with about and inch lying in parts, and not one single person complaining about it and not able to come into work.

It sucks to see that every year we get the same promises from the councils/government saying "we'll be more prepared for next year" and yet it's about time they should be preparing and we've heard nothing...

Just some more grit buckets would be nice, I spent most of my winter last year carefully walking to work as they didn't see fit to provide enough to grit any roads other than the one main road going in to town.

I only complained about going in to work because I had to cover other shifts as I was the closest person. Others also in walking distance claimed they couldn't get to work so I ended up being stuck with extra shifts for a while. To top it off I then ended up being in an empty restaurant because our usual customers didn't come into town.

Part of me really wishes for lots of snow like last year. I love it, and so does the dog.

The other part of me hopes there's none as I really can't be putting up with the chavs trying to do my windows with snowballs as we eat Christmas dinner again...

UK Outlook for Wednesday 24 Nov 2010 to Friday 3 Dec 2010:

The period will begin cold, with many central and western areas having some bright or sunny spells. Wintry showers will affect eastern areas, particularly along the coast but these will extend inland at times. The showers will start turning to snow even at lower levels at times. During the first weekend, there is a risk of more widespread sleet and snow for a time, with the possibility of some significant accumulations in places. The cold or very cold conditions are likely to continue into the second week, with widespread overnight frosts and the risk of icy surfaces. There is a chance as we move into December that southern and southwestern parts will become more unsettled as rain, sleet and snow try to push up from the south.

UK Outlook for Saturday 4 Dec 2010 to Saturday 18 Dec 2010:

The cold or very cold conditions are likely to continue, with precipitation amounts generally close to average, giving the risk of sleet and snow at times in many areas. However, parts of the north and west of the country may be drier than normal. Sunshine amounts are likely to be generally above average, although some southeastern parts may see more in the way of cloud. Temperatures are likely to continue to be below or well below average, with widespread overnight frosts, locally severe. There is a small chance of it turning less cold at times, giving the risk of further rain, sleet and snow in some parts.

What are you guys expecting?

I've done quite a bit of reading and I'm finding it quite interesting.

Personally I hope we have a cold snowy winter, though I'm sure many of you will vehemently disagree!

I dont,i work outdoors and at 2am with a blizzard and below zero temps is not very nice.i guess you must work in an office so its nice to look out of the window lol.snow is nice on a xmas card and thats about it.

Yeah, to some extent. Looks like we're not going to see much about 3 degrees over the next week.

The cold here is different though, it is much dyer and crisp. -15 here doesn't feel that bad.

The rail network will come to a grinding halt. The road network will come to a grinding halt. People will refuse to go to work. Councils will fail to anticipate the snow and fail at providing suitable grit. This will be due to a few inches of snow for a week, maybe two.

Meanwhile in our Swedish neighbours will carry on as normal despite being under a foot of snow.
