Better to get out while the going is good, rather than waiting for conditions to get worse.

This really, it's just common sense although some people probably are taking the pee a little to get as much time off work as possible. The forecasts have been incredibly inaccurate for some areas and they've received much more snow than was expected. Better to leave now and get home while the roads are okay than for everyone to be rushing around later once it starts falling and accumulating.

In the south east where there’s no fresh snow coming in the next few hours, it will be more dangerous to drive tonight won’t it, when the snow has started freezing over.

Just to add to the drama:
Gas supply fears as cold snap continues

National Grid has warned it may not have enough gas to meet UK demand on Thursday and has asked suppliers to provide more.

In the event that there is still a deficit, large gas users such as industry and large businesses will be asked to use less gas.

Consumers will only be asked to use less gas as a last resort if these measures do not work.

Demand for gas on Wednesday hit a six-year high as cold weather swept the UK.

"This warning has been issued in response to a series of significant supply losses resulting in a forecast end of day supply deficit," the National Grid posted on an energy data site.

Some pipelines carrying gas from the Netherlands and Belgium have had problems this week.

A National Grid spokeswoman said: "National gas demand today is high and due to the extreme weather conditions, there have been gas supply losses overnight.

"At 5.45am this morning we issued a 'Gas Deficit Warning' to the market. This is an indication to the market that we'd like more gas to be made available to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the national gas network.

"We are in communication with industry partners and are closely monitoring the situation."

Side roads and what not tend to get worse but the gritters round this way seem to do a good job overnight of keeping main roads, dual carriageways and what not fairly clear.

I haven’t seen one gritter round our way.

Can you see main roads or anything from your house? If I look out of my window the roads look awful because it's side streets/an estate. If I walked a few hundred metres to the main road though it's absolutely fine. It'll depend on your council and what not as some are better than others.

At work we have a glass corridor connecting two buildings....holy **** that's cold walking down it!

I work in a plasterboard building that is situated inside a big open metal building with the shutter doors open, soon as you step out of it you may as well be outside :p

Our council are only clearing main roads, the residential roads are all left, it has been that way for a few years now.

The gritter depot is just around the corner from work and my house is close to the motorway where it would be coming back from. Roads were completely clear this morning but it's snowed a bit since them so I'm a bit worried what they are going to be like later.
