WINTER 2018/2019 - Chat thread!

Sorry to say, but that is pretty much wishing death on people.

I find that there are some incredibly selfish opinions about the weather in this thread at times.

That cold does look a little extreme! I wish we would get a solid month of freezing weather and snow though. It would help people realise the world doesn't end with 1cm of snow.

meh, it'll only thin the herd and take care of the weak

i'm sure the poster didn't mean any harm other than they wished we had a proper 'winter' - that opinion is no less selfish than those who wished the snow stayed away.

How is wishing the snow and freezing cold stayed away, selfish. What measurable benefit does it bring anyone?

fun. some people can actually enjoy the snow and the cold. you're clearly not one of them and that is fine but try and not forget there are others that can and do derive pleasure from the snow and cold.

When its very cold and snowy, I’m housebound due to illness and can’t get out at all. So if others find it fun, that’s fine, but as far as I’m concerned, I hope there’s not so much as a flake down my way.

Peoples lives and health come before simple fun.

sorry to hear you're not in the best of health. but, you posted there are some incredibly selfish opinions on weather in this thread when you are also being selfish (admittedly with good reason but selfish nonetheless)

Not just my health, thousands of others too. You’d soon think differently if someone you loved caught pneumonia or crashed after skidding on ice.

Road accidents, illness, NHS stretched to breaking point, mass transport issues, increased fuel poverty, millions lost in the economy. Is it really worth it for a bit of fun?

I enjoy the snow but I'd still prefer we don't get any at all because it absolutely leads to accidents and deaths. As Rob has said some things come before simple pleasures and fun.

Without a bit of fun there is no point living. I cant stand hot weather, and that also kills people but many out there still wish for it! I think you need to lighten up a little mate :D
There’s far more fun things to do than lobbing a load of snow around lol. Hot weather is dangerous too, but nowhere near the same level as extreme winters. I suffer in hot weather too. I like it around 25 degrees and sunny. That’s my optimal point.

jesus christ. virtually every damn thread in GD ends up in some sort of random argument. fine, no snow. no cold. no winter. no rain either, because that causes crashes. actually lets ban cars too.

i'm sorry you're ill @robfosters, genuinely. but the world ain't gonna stop turning just cause you've been dealt a crappy hand. do you also wish for no hot weather in the summer, because as you know (and as mentioned above) that kills too.

i'm with @200sols on this one. i'm 43 and my health is really not the best though not life threatening. if there was no fun left in life i know what i'd be doing - sitting back with the finest bottle of whiskey money could buy and some tablets. the blunt truth is i'd be doing it a lot sooner if some of the posters in here had they're way.
car kill......bikes kill.....the sun kills.....the snow kills.....virtually everything can kill us, hell living is the biggest killer of all. again to repeat 200sols, lighten up.

Jesus Christ, calm yourself, raised blood pressure is good for no one.

I’m not even talking just about me, I mean everyone. It’s a far safer country when it doesn’t snow.

You went way overboard there.

Starting to remind of that guy who started threads about storms in the US and that he misses them so much he can't enjoy life.

blood pressure is perfectly fine - it's about the only part of my health that is....and i didn't go overboard, the histrionics and melodrama were fully intended. i responded in true GD style to match you're 'wishing death on people post' - someone posts a lighthearted post (i'm assuming lighthearted, maybe the guy asking for the USA's winter really does want apocalyptic like weather) and someone almost always comes along with a high horse/woe is me/how dare you say that etc reply. see the post for what it was, someone having a bit of fun and wishing for some snow at winter. they weren't being super incredibly selfish, they weren't wishing death on untold numbers of vulnerable, old, young or infirmed. they were just wanting a bit of snow.

I want fire and brimstone :(

The -30c+ they're getting in the states is probably a little TOO cold, but the -17/18 we got in 2010 was okay, it was nice to see icicles hanging off houses at christmas, one of the few times christmas actually felt & looked like christmas

Quit being a drama queen, it's not the weather that kills but people's inability to deal with it

While I broadly agree if someone does need ongoing medical care for a condition(s) that can potentially kill them but not severe enough they need to be in hospital a spell of bad weather could cut them off from the care they need in an emergency.

Largely though it is due to people's inability to deal with it or prepare in advance.

Just look at Russia, Canada, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Greenland they all seem to cope just fine with arctic extremes every winter

A few snow flakes fall in the south though and it's the end of the world

Last winter, someone I follow on YouTube was making the point that we make such a fuss over "a little bit of snow" in this country when compared to colder countries, and how "ridiculous" it is that the country "grinds to a halt" etc.

A week or so later the same chap was saying how his work had asked him to temporarily relocate to a neighbouring region but he had refused.... because of the bad weather. :D
