Winter 2022/23 - It's too cold :(

Temperature here has finally dropped into the mid teens during the day and 6-7°C overnight.

Had a couple of damp days, so lit the wood burner in the living room today. With the vents almost shut, it’s using one small log every 90 minutes or so.

Very cozy and taking the slight chill out of this old stone farmhouse.

The ban will continue until we get long periods of slow, steady rain. Heavy downpours just mean the water runs off instead of soaking into the ground and filling up the reservoirs... It does mean we also get more flooding though, so if you fancy becoming a flood relief specialist, business will boom. I imagine a few water company CEOs will be vacating their positions too, as the number of sewer overflows increase, so that could be a lucrative move.

Temp in the house last night hit 12ºC, so we're getting close to putting the heating on, I think.

Yeah I phrased this badly :) the meaning being the hose pipe ban isn't effecting me when it's absolutely chucking it down, in particular my ponds getting low (strictly speaking I could have used a hose pipe as I have frogs)
I am pretty familiar with the reservoir levels as I go in person and also check the levels online

Body has adjusted to the slight drop in temps, back to sweating if physically active.

Room temp currently 17C and nowhere near needing heating.

Might have to start putting heater on, for last bit of cheap night rate electricity soon. 15mins should do it. ;)
We popped ours on for 30 mins the other morning to warm the rooms for our 9 month old. Quickly turned it off though as by 07:55 the smart meter jumped from £1.12 to £2.05 in just about 25 mins. Won't be doing that again until the real cold weather comes in..

£1 an hour, ouch

I wonder what makes our house so cold!
Seems like most people have a lot better insulation than us!
Have you checked the loft? When I had a good look around mine (1999 build) I found bits where the builders had just left gaps in the insulation, usually out of sight a bit.
I stuck another layer down on top. Not saying it's just the new insulation but the house hasn't dropped below 18c yet even overnight.

House exposed to prevailing south westerly?

Since getting cavity wall insulation and a loft insulation top up ~10 years ago, our first floor flat in a two up two down is much warmer than it used to be, but our bedroom and lounge are very exposed to the chilly winter north easterly and easterly winds. Not helped by duff double glazing and an awful gap between the seal and opening windows.

Our heating has only been on once so far this "season" over the weekend. When I said to the fam we need to get to 1st November if possible this year I did kind of half mean it as a joke and didn't think we would be able to. I normally say 1st October minimum. Well this year we did actually get to 1st November without too much difficulty. A couple of moans from her and the kids whilst walking around in pants and a dressing gown, which as we know instantly nullifies said complaints. It's been a mild October largely. If the rain continues into November with milder temps we could actually start this winter off with a couple of cheaper months than originally would have expected. But we are definitely on the cusp of it becoming a daily thing right now.
