Winter 2024/25 - Cold or Mild? Rain or Snow?

Nothing but heavy rain in brighton, then a good 1-2cm of snow all the way up to Gatwick. Back in london it was just freezing rain with some leftover snow on the cars. Just popped my head out and now its mostly white and covered in snow.

If the forecasted rain/sleet continues as snow could be a good few cms in the morning but I doubt it given the forecasted temps of 12c by midday.

Snow here too. Is it inappropriate to wake my 4 yr old up? It'll rain early morning I think!
Yes. He/she will love to see the snow.

I remember in the early 2000's I was working with some South Africans. We all worked in central London but that year is snowed heavily and managed to settle. They were like little kids at Christmas and made a snowman in the car park.

EDIT: Not weather related but it just reminded me that they would swap gun magazines with the American guy on the team. One would routinely carry a massive knife on his belt until I pointed out he could be arrested. Amazingly he'd somehow got that through customs. It was like working with a bunch of South African Crocodile Dundee's. Happy times :)

A brave chap died today falling 70m from sharp edge on Blencathra. RIP.

I attach a picture from 2010, same place, approx this time of year.

Does it say if they were suitably equipped. The amount that head up places like that on trainers is ridiculous.
I used to love some ice and snow hiking years ago. Bit you shouldn't be up there without axes and crampons and know how to self arrest.

Snowing lots here in Manchester.

Light snow here in Silverdale, Staffordshire.

I'm wondering if it'll be a little slippery down my street until I get to the treated and undoubtedly clear main road in the morning....

Ridiculous over hype by the media for a change....

To be fair in terms of weather warnings if it had been even slightly colder here it would have been the difference between heavy miserable rain which we've got or 2010 like snow and the return to very mild through tonight and tomorrow until it drops again was constantly on and off in the models.

I had my doubts as none of the models showed the jet stream cooperating and these days no matter how much other conditions are favouring wintery weather nothing of note seems to come off unless the conditions which displace the jet stream from us are in play.

There are plenty of road closures and accidents out there and we’ve got some pretty heavy snow here just north of London, more than I expected given the sleet forecast. Shame it’ll all turn to rain in the morning, there’ll be a decent covering before it changes.

I saw some properly moronic driving tonight. Full marks to the cretin tailgating me when I was going down a big hill in second gear.

Can't stand that when driving in the snow people up your backside, not everyone has 4x4.

What do you think to further in the week still some days with potential?

I'm working in Bedfordshire right now and untreated roads and pavements are white. As you mention if this had been colder could have been huge amounts of snow.
