Just to let everyone know through my experience. Once you have your reserved Bunac place, they then email you with all the forms that you have to send to the Canadian Embassy.

I have done that and have been told if I get accepted that it will take around 6 weeks for the total process. I'll let you know any updates

Just going through the application documents and I will have to send proof that I have $3000 in my bank account. I was expecting this, but not so early in the process and I do not yet have the money saved yet. If I don't send any proof will the visa still go through fine? I have read a few times that people did not even have all the money and still got their visas? Or their bank would not give them proof...

It sounds strange that it's so early, they must have tightened things up since I did it. Any chance you could borrow the money from your parents or someone for a period to show that you've got the funds and as you save up you can pay it back or however you wish to do it?

If I pay my visa fee now, how long have I got till I book a flight? or can I do it whenever?

Can't I pay when I'm ready to go? or will there be a danger of missing out? I've got the $3000.. but still thinking about what to do.

Not sure quite what you mean here but if you're asking about the BUNAC flights - they might well get booked up early. If you're going to book a flight independently then you can do it whenever but again remember that it may get booked up on dates you want.

Pay what when you're ready to go?

Sorry, the bunac registration fee. (£254)

I guess what i'm asking is, do I get it all paid for asap or will there be plenty of places? (on the whole programme, not the flights).

The information on the website says a limited number of places, I'm afraid I've got no idea how many limited means in this context but if I was thinking about going and had the money to hand I'd probably send off a.s.a.p. just in case.

This may be what I have to do, but I'd rather not if I can help it. Since the turnaround for the visa could be 10 weeks I don't want to take any chances.

I have heard stories of banks being difficult about providing proof as well (mine's HSBC)

I would apply ASAP if I were you, you'll be kicking yourself if you miss out on a place :)

I can understand not wanting to do it but it's just an option in case you get stuck. A bank statement showing that you've got the money at some point is surely all you need? At least I didn't take anything extra but it a) might have changed since I did it and b) I wasn't asked to prove it by customs anyway.

I assumed they wanted some sort of 'official' document from the bank so I had another look at what you need to send to the embassy and it says:

You must include either the Proof of Funds – candidate form or a bank document incorporating this information.

Which is quite vague, hopefully a bank statement will be OK.

Thanks for the help :)

BTW Tim, the BUNAC page is currently saying spaces are running out fast, FYI

Just to let everyone know (I think I am about 75% through the process of getting my visa)

I paid Bunac the fee. I then received an email from them telling me that I have a place on their programme.

The next step was to get a police check done. After that I must include it in the forms that they had emailed me to fill out to then send to the Canadian Embassy in Paris.
In those forms is a proof of funds letter.
All I had to do was take it to my bank and get them to sign it to prove that on that day I had over £2000 in my bank account.

Once that was all done I sent the forms off to Paris. About a week later I got a confirmation saying that I had passed stage 1 (I assume this is just a double check that I have sent all the correct forms) The next step was then to pay the £90 admin fee. I then did this by wire transfer and uploaded a proof of payment letter to the link they had emailed to me.

A few days later I received another email telling me that they had received my proof of funds. The next email I got (last week) was to tell me that my application had been forwarded to London for the next stage of evaluation.

After reading on the Bunac facebook page it is looking like this process takes approximately 3 weeks. After that you will either receive and email telling you that you have been accepted. Or a letter through the post explaining the reasons why you have been rejected. The email also stated that if rejected the reimbursement process would start. So at least you don’t loose your money.

Once the acceptance email has been received people have been booking their flights. So it looks like that is the final stage. If this last step does take 3 weeks, then the whole process has only took about 5-6 weeks.

I hope I have helped some people who are also (thinking about) applying this year. Any questions anyone has I would be happy to help :)
Also anyone that is going this year, it would be nice to meet before we take off :)

i have some issues with the canadian Revenue Agency. I work in the Tax Department for a large Investment Bank, For a previous employer who i cant identify <Cough>JMP<Cough>
someone had did the previous 10 years of T5 slips, t5013 slips, and T3 slips wrong.
So i was tasked with fixing it. I fixed it and found out we have overpaid by about $10M.

They decided to fine us $2M, the long and short of it is, i said just deduct it from the balance you owe us and can you remit the balance. It got very ugly and went through the courts, who ultimately rules in our favour and awarded costs.

Personally as i own shares in a Canadian partnership, i am deemed to be CAD resident for the purposes of tax, and as such i'm legally obliged to file a tax return and as a result of the above, i was subject to several "random" audits. even though i'm not a Canadian and have never set foot in Canada, i owe them £200 in non paid taxes, i told them to get lost, and have never returned their mail.

boring world of tax i'm afraid.

So has anyone had any updates on this? As expected, I am stuck on the proof of funds document. My parents have kindly let me borrow some money so I have the funds, but both HSBC and Lloyds refuse to sign the document or give any other sort of proof. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I have sent an enquiry to BUNAC as well so I'll see what they say.

Can you not just send a copy of your bank statement with your name and address on it?

Also have you tried going to other branches to see if someone else will sign it?

I got mine at Nationwide and they signed it no problem. I have got my Visa confirmation through now. It took the full six weeks. Also I don't know if you know this but you can apply straight to the embassy now and save yourself the £254 BUNAC fee!

Hopefully a bank statement will be OK, I'll see what they say. Yeah I know about applying direct, if I was to do this again I wouldn't go the BUNAC route, but it is good to have a visa reserved for you, I don't know if they still have visas available for the direct application? I will have to try different branches if a bank statement isn't good enough.
