Sturridge easily deserves to start ahead of Rooney.
Yup, particularly with the team we've taken. Hodgson has picked what is effectively a team built around Liverpool's style, lots of movement, constant movement and smart moving of the ball. Rooney is frankly a bit crap at it. I wouldn't be against it IF he could be remotely trusted to play upfront and stay there. but him dropping deep and trying to get on the ball and playing crap throughballs would ruin a fast moving offence completely. Sturridge has fantastic movement and creates loads of space, working the defence and moving them everywhere.
Rooney would drop deep, kill attacks, not create space by working the defenders. Rooney's biggest weakness is his dropping into a position he believes he is brilliant at. It's no surprise Utd looked better with Rooney pushed forward for a couple games for Utd, nor that they looked just as good with him injured, just without him attempting to be the playmaker. Then he came back in and kept dropping deep against Bayern and his attempts to play people in behind were embarrassingly poor.
