Sturridge easily deserves to start ahead of Rooney.

Yup, particularly with the team we've taken. Hodgson has picked what is effectively a team built around Liverpool's style, lots of movement, constant movement and smart moving of the ball. Rooney is frankly a bit crap at it. I wouldn't be against it IF he could be remotely trusted to play upfront and stay there. but him dropping deep and trying to get on the ball and playing crap throughballs would ruin a fast moving offence completely. Sturridge has fantastic movement and creates loads of space, working the defence and moving them everywhere.

Rooney would drop deep, kill attacks, not create space by working the defenders. Rooney's biggest weakness is his dropping into a position he believes he is brilliant at. It's no surprise Utd looked better with Rooney pushed forward for a couple games for Utd, nor that they looked just as good with him injured, just without him attempting to be the playmaker. Then he came back in and kept dropping deep against Bayern and his attempts to play people in behind were embarrassingly poor.

Good attacking options certainly, defensively I can see England conceding plenty though.

Absolutely zero pressure on them to perform, knowing this is probably one of the worst England teams in a while. Young team though, so as long they show some hope I think they'll look at Euro 2016 and World Cup 2018 as tournaments at which they'd hope to go far in.

Decent squad there, I'd have liked them to have taken Carroll though (Obviously being a Geordie an all) but he'd give us another option. Maybe instead of Lampard (although it might be good to have an old head around) or Wellbeck.

LBs and Cahill have been fantastic this season but the other CB and most certainly RB are no where near the level you need to win. Would also have liked to see either Caulker or Davis in there too ahead of either Smalling or Jones (or a straight swap for both). I also think Carroll could have been a good plan C player over maybe Welbeck or Lampard but in fairness to Welbeck he's done okay for England and looked decent enough against Bayern too.

Lambert can do the Carroll role easily enough and he's not bad at kicking the ball either. Good penalty taker if it comes to that too - indeed he's probably the best in the squad.

I think Carroll can still come good, and think he'll have a future with England, but his season has (again) been disrupted too much with injury. He was never going to go this time around.

He won't but if Hodgson had any sense he'd build the side around our diamond/4-3-3 system with Rooney coming in for Suarez and Lallana, Barkley or Wilshere for Allen/Coutinho.

He's got the foundations of a very good side and system ready and waiting for him.

Suarez is English? Sweet.

Cole instead of Shaw?

Yep, I rate him very highly and despite not featuring much for Chelsea this season he has not let them down when called upon. I do rate Shaw too but having watched him in person this season his final ball leaves a lot to be desired.

Cole has arguably been England's best player over the past 10 years with the possible exception of Rooney, has a lot of experience nearly always delivers in the big tournaments.

Still don't understand why Rooney got picked. But then again, they have to test the hotel food on somebody.

Cole > Shaw

We need to be bold with our WC team...for those saying play Cole then that is another 4 years gone and with Shaw being 22 years old, people will be saying "oh he doesn't have enough experience" or whatever.

We need to try youth and trust it.

Plus Cole has hardly played at all for the whole season.

Cole has been in awesome form just at the end of the season and is the better player right now than Shaw (and is fresh as a daisy!).

I dunno...

In Tournament finals I always have been of the thinking that you play your best 11.

Maybe we are so far behind the top teams that you run out some of the younger players for experience with an eye to the future... maybe .. ;)

Get Sturridge up top as well i think. 4-4-1-1 in defense going to 3-3-3-1 in possession

something simple like this on paper looks alright...
Standard def

possession - recycle/attacking

4 of the front 6 you've named have spent the last 4-5 months switching between a 4-3-3 and a 4-4-2 diamond. Surely it's just common sense to use that system with those players? Lallana and Rooney easily slot into either system and you can switch between both systems with the same 6 players from game to game or even during games.
