World Cup Hosts 2018

Whilst the bid itself may not have been subject to criminal underworld bribes, the event itself will be. Construction contracts will be given to the most expensive bidders or which ever company pays the biggest backhanders. Russia is rife with organised crime and no doubt the head honchos are rubbing their hands with glee. Not just at the massive number of foreigners who will be spending money either.

I expect alcohol will still be banned for Muslims. People have the wrong impression of the Islamic world, I think it's very gracious of them to allow alcohol into their country for the consumption of their non-Muslim guests.

I think it's backwards, much like the rest of their religion, to ban alcohol in the first place

Because as always, our typical chav reactions are to **** those that beat us. It's 'normal' calling Russians all sorts of names right now. Tomorrow everyone's short attention spans would've been directed elsewhere and all will be forgotten.

Think its more to do with ... :

Have to say, if the stuff from Panorama and in the press etc hadn't surfaced, im sure the majority of brits would have accepted it a lot better.
Fact is, we know FIFA is corrupt in numerous ways, theres no evidence that this vote was anything but fair, but with what we know it cant help but leave a bad taste.

But you are letting your xenophobe ic feelings surface because you have no like for like retort.

Everything I have said is accurate, everything you have said isn't.

People in scotland aren't tartan clad midgets.

Neither are they Robin Williams in drag with a bad accent.

Neither do 99.5% of the population own a kilt, let alone wear one. Those that do tend to be very old servicemen.

So have a heart, grow a brain and shut your nonesing trap you sore sore loser.

Ouch!

Let me get this straight, it's ok for you to come in and question everybody in here and tell them they are sore losers but if I mock you for not being able to host it yourselves and (may I add) after you have pointed out we failed because Prince William, David Cameron and David Beckham led the team. If I mock you by saying "bring the Krankies and Mrs Doubtfire" I'm a Xenophobe?

LMFAO!

You're not very good at banter outside of your comfort zone that is GD are you? How about if you contributed to the general football forums you would be taken seriously and we could have a laugh?

I could have mentioned that you couldn't possibly have hosted it because you're fans don't know how to behave themselves? Ask the people of Manchester City Centre of they want the Scottish back in the town for a party? but I didn't, I was having a laugh with you hence every single post having a smilie in it!

Get over yourself :D

I don't disagree with that, but it isn't a new problem is it?

So you admit FIFA are a dodgy organisation, but you think there is no way in hell Russia might have used underhand tactics to get the bid?

Do you think England is just as corrupt as Russia, or even close?

The reason people might be annoyed is because England had the best bid, which was confirmed by FIFA, but lost out of the blue and were seemingly ignored completely by FIFA when it came to the actual decision.

It's not really a surprise, is it?
I'm sure Russia had no problems pandering to the ridiculous tax exemptions FIFA wants.

Whether or not Russia used underhand tactics can be speculated for years to come, but for anybody who watched Monday's Panorama, it makes sense.

So, we cant help being a sporting nation and passtionate about watching sports, we also have the Circket world cup and Rugby World Cup in 2010s

I never stated that we cannot be passionate about sports but thank you for pointing out that, not only are we hosting the Olympics and Commonwealth Games in the next 4 years, we are ALSO hosting 2 other major sporting events in the same period.

I think, as a country, we have had a fair crack at the hosting whip for a bit....

Is it just me or, shouldn't the world cup pretty much go to the most competant bid(as long as its not a total farce) that hasn't held it before.

Its the WORLD CUP, and as such a chance to bring football, big/great teams, and fans from the world over to get involved. The african's seemed incredibly happy to be part of it, and thats much of the point, without it being held there, the general african people wouldn't really have a chance to see those types of games. The world cup SHOULD be global and SHOULDN'T be about being the most profitable, but being as wide reaching and all inclusive as possible. Getting people into cities isn't the idea, transport links, great for uk residents traveling hundreds of miles, and tourists, but shouldn't most of the tickets, quite fairly, end up in the hands of the more local population.

If it were just about, and only about, making money then it would be in the USA, UK or a couple euro countries every 4 years and tickets would be £300 a pop for everyone. I've no problem with people making money, but it should be more about people getting the chance to go to live games around the world.

I think England should get the chance but, not for a good long while yet. If these things only ever go to the best 1st world countries due to the money available, well, these types of events help improve 3rd world countries pretty dramatically.

The question is, when should we have known we weren't really in the running, and when should we have pulled out and stopped throwing money at the bid?

We invented the sport, why should Qatar get it, they have no interest in football, they are only holding it because they have the money to waste on the infrastructure that will be ripped down when it finishes. Why not Australia they have never had.

North America
Souther America
Europe
East Asia
Africa

Now the Middle East.

I got ARAB Money

Looking at the comments about poorer developing nations getting preference, perhaps England should have paired with Scotland or Wales to increase their chances.

Perhaps, but that is fraught with problems on both sides. Team 'GB' style rubbish.

I feel that it would still have went east anyway.

That one went straight over your head didn't it, has all the anger clouded your senses?

Oh and :)

One thing still annoying me is that Russia won the "European" bid to host the games. I know they are in UEFA but Russia is hardly what I would consider European.

People are calling for Arshavin to be booed on Saturday for backing the Russian bid. No matter whether Russia bought the bid or not, there are a lot of ***** in this country.

I don't doubt it is very progresive, but with such an endoctrinated faith and rules with very very clear views and punishment for breaking them. It is very odd to just let the people whos veiws and behaviour are so vastly diferent to the local population go about their behaviour infront of those who would be punished for doing so not weeks before or after the WC.

My statement was to highlight that if their would be no world cup, would this pogresive views still be in place for tourists or guests.

Yes, go to Doha today and you can get a beer, wine, spirits etc. You have to understand that the middle east is not like the UK, where the law is the be all and end all - discretion is permitted. Such a blind eye is turned to alcohol consumption that you'll even see Muslim Arabs consuming alcohol over there. This is not the case in Saudi Arabia but Saudi aren't hosting the world cup :) FIFA will have worked closely with the Qatari authorities to ensure that there aren't any PR disasters like fans getting sent to prison for what we would say were trivial misunderstandings.

I'll also point out that you don't actually have to have a drink to enjoy the football :)
