World Cup Hosts 2018

I wonder if the Russians have their own version of the Vuvuzela. Its the only thing memorable about the last world cup :p

Bids for the 2026 world cup are in, bookies have Narnia as favourites, followed by middle earth, atlantis, hogwarts and sesame street hot on their tails!

The voting was as follows:

Round 1

England 2
Netherlands-Belgium 4
Spain-Portugal 7
Russia 9

Round 2

Netherlands-Belgium 2
Spain-Portugal 7
Russia 13

Seems like there were tactical votes for Netherlands and Belgium in the first round to make sure England were knocked out. They lost 2 votes in the 2nd round of voting!

What a vile distasteful episode!

You would have thought that unless the team you vote for in the first round gets knocked out, you shouldn't be able to change your vote, but obviously fifa wouldn't want to make that a rule now would they, lol.

I hadn't thought of it that way, that makes perfect sense. I'd assume that the two votes for England would have been from ourselves and Chuck Blazer, the American on the executive-committee. The Holland/Belgium bid would have had one from the Belgian and perhaps either the French or German member in both rounds, with two tactical votes. That's pretty shocking behaviour (though completely legal) but shows the extent to which they wanted England out. I wonder who Geoff Thompson voted for after England? I also wonder if Thompson had any contact with the English bid team after voting but prior to the announcement as he would obviously have been aware that England were out of the running, perhaps explaining the generally depressed look around the team before anything had been announced.

Its ok, our press will tear FIFA a new bumhole.

Infact, I fully expect people to be resigning at some point in the future.

The entire thing was a blatant disgrace. I actually feel embarassed for FIFA @ how much of a FARCE it was.

Both Russia and Spain seemed to "know" that Russia were going to win.

QATAR ?!! LOL. Its just nonsense, it really is.

SA was crap, and Im glad it was crap, but Quatar is just LOL.

FIFA are so moronic. (and corrupt to the extreme)

That's the thing though. There were lots of noises like that before hand and maybe Panorama knew it. Therefore so did the Beeb which is why they aired that programme before the voting process took place. It was felt we'd already lost so try and sully FIFA's image (not that as a footy fan we were surprised anyway it's a load of balls).

The point above is correct though, domestic competition is far more important to most fans now, and damn right about time it is. Cash cows such as the Champion's League being played each year have helped this. International friendlies during the domestic season are a joke, and qualifiers are a massive inconvenience to fans and those fans of sides whose players return injured. Perhaps the choices of where these competitions are heading are therefore an indication of changing times? Qatar's a wholly untapped and rich market for FIFA, and the WC would be huge not just for the Qataris but that part of the world in general. This has also made me think that perhaps India should have had a go. Yes it's a cricket country but they love their football over there as well.

It doesn't matter, the sounds of dying civillians and the gunfire from the Spetsnaz will drown out any vuvuzela-esqe noise, as they storm the stadium to recapture it from Chechen rebels.

I agree and disagree.

I think the International friendlies are stupid when they're mid season, as I think the qualifiers are as well.

I however disagree about this being more "important" to fans.
I'd like nothing more then to see England win something. National pride. IMO, it's that kind of attitude that hasn't helped the International game.

Well that and the F.A. ... mainly the F.A.

Russia and Quatar both fit with what FIFA are doing though?

Taking football to "lesser footballing" countries, in an effort to help spread the game.

I sense butthurt on an epic scale.

I'm dissapointed that England didn't get the bid, I'd have loved to see a World Cup here, but I think it's half a dozen of one and 6 of the other or however it's said.

English media are quick to build us up the line "we never excpected to get it", sorry it's not how the media came across. The BBC going on about how they'd pulled out big names and had put lots of effort in. Does this mean other countries didn't put effort in? Didn't pull out big names? *remember names are relativie to where you live*

English media didn't help, people talking out against FIFA can't of helped this includes the F.A.

The Premier league has for a long time not being too liked by FIFA has it? I mean it's hyped to the max and made out to be the best ect ect yet the English team continually fail and the clubs take a bit of a hammering from big wigs at FIFA / UEFA.

I also, don't think there is as much to gain in spreading the game here then it is in Russia / Quatar (I do believe this is a big part of the reason)

I'm not saying FIFA don't take brides ect ect, look at Jack Warner haha

Just, I'm not annoyed and butthurting and raging at the Russians ect ect

I'm just a little bit dissapointed, 2030 is our next chance... that's a long time away, I'd like to see our domestic problems sorted before we get a world cup.

o/ I've had a drink.

Just watching the panorama programme now...Jesus it's no wonder we didn't get any votes, could the BBC have possibly annoyed the FIFA people more lol.
Also why is it 2030 before we can get the WC, surely we can bid for 2026?

The consensus seems to be that it'll be too soon for another European nation to host it in 2026, so 2030 is a more realistic date, and hopefully Slack Bladder will be long dead by then.

UK tax policies will greatly affect bids will it not?

aren't you supposed to pay tax to the UK's tax man on all your earnings made from competition in the UK and on all future earnings that could be accounted to competing within the UK?

say for example i come from brazil and play in a competition in the UK and i am the star player of the tournament, i pay my tax on all money made from the competition. 3 months later a company from USA decided to give me a deal worth £10 million to advertise their product, the UK tax man will want a cut, because he say's i got the deal as a direct result of playing in the UK.

i dont know about you but i think the tax and the different types and amounts in this country is ridiculous.

personally if i was a professional sportsman i would rather play abroad and never ever play in the UK, due to how much i would be taxed, unless they offered me a considerable amount more than what i would get abroad. but it would have to be at least double, because roughly 50% would be tax anyway if i was earning loads.
