World first QD-OLED monitor from Dell and Samsung (34 inch Ultrawide 175hz)

I must be sleeping under a rock, didn't realise OLED screens were here already! Ordered one today. I went for freesync option as apparently its quiet even though I have nvidia card.

Looks like text is pretty awful on this so I'll keep my 32" LG 4k with ergo stand as well for text related activities.

Sooo it's here and on its stand. Impressions...

1) biggest negative is that the screen size sucks, feels like a letterbox. Resolution is adequate. Much prefer the format and height of my 32" 4K screen.

2) I never thought I could really tell about motion blur etc but it's really really good.

3) the black levels are just amazing. Noticeably better at night.

Overall mixed. It's a transformational tech and I love it, the ultrawidescreen part, resolution and needing a dark room I'm not convinced by. Let's see!

I had the same feeling coming from a 4k 16:9. Instead of feeling I got a wider screen, it felt like my older screen with the top 25% cut off. However I do find the benefit of the wider screen in a lot of games. Currently playing diablo iv and much prefer wide aspect ratio as the 16:9 screen is more zoomed in.

Around the black levels, that is my biggest gripe as it is obviously grey in the day time. I think that aspect gets ignored a lot. It is inherent to qd oled as it lacks a polariser to give more nit output. The lg oled screens do have a polariser and stay black in the daytime.

DWF owner and its been a game changer - absolutely love mine, to the extent its rekindled my interest in gaming.

Using as normal and do a pixel refresh when prompted - turn off, if away for a prolonged period.

Windows screen saver can be a bit hit and miss from a reliability perspective, so I installed a freeware product called 'Saver Starter' so I can initiate by moving my mouse to the corner of the screen like macOS.

Yes, you captured my feeling very well on this. Tempted to return it to be honest. Ultra widescreen is usless in my opinion.

@Locky I'm the same as @JediFragger, I take a couple of precautions but on whole using as normal :)

- Maximise my browser window (F11) to remove the title/search bar.
- Use a screensaver - I have installed freeware software so I can use a corner hot-spot and switch on manually if needed.
- Autohide taskbar and desktop icons.
- Still using light and dark modes depending on theme.

I'll be honest that when I first received mine (DWF) I was resolute to not change my habits; otherwise it makes the monitor pointless.

I have relented slightly as I really like the screen, so I take some preventative measures as mentioned above. Still like to vary themes and not just stick to dark modes. I just make sure that I don't leave the screen static on one screen for too long just like CRT's back in the day!

Also my ancient iMac started to have light burn in issues so I got into a good habit of manually kicking in a screensaver (like Windows Ribbons) which cleared up the retention/stopped it getting worse.

When I first got my DWF was being ultra paranoid with it, letting it do it maintenance every 4 hours etc. Now I've turn off the reminders and just let it do it's thing. Was so annoying.

When I use it with my work laptop, I use a black background and the task bar is on the laptop screen. I then just try and position windows in slightly different places when moving stuff around, rather than just always docking in the same place.

Thinking of changing my LG 38" UW for an OLED.

I didn't really want to go smaller but think I'll go for the Samsung or an Alienware AW3423DWF.

My current monitor has GSYNC but these are FreeSync. Does FreeSync work with an Nvidia card (4090)? and if yes, is there much difference between these monitors?

Freesync will work fine with your card. There are reports of slight flickering at low frames, but i've not experienced it and with a 4090, low frames wont be an issue! I've not seen the Samsung (they use the same panel), but having had the Alienware for a few months couldnt be happier.

I moved from the LG 38" Ultrawide
It's smaller but definitely an upgrade :)

I also moved from a 38" UW to the DWF and while i loved the size and resolution of the 38" UW the DWF just kicks it's ass in every other department.

Don't think i will ever go back to LCD monitor again.

Whilst HDR content is stunning, in my experience SDR on OLED looks terrible compared to IPS panels.
OLED or QD-OLED though? The colour white is rendered purer (paper white) on QD-OLED, for example. And having owned one of the better examples of AH-IPS panels with a hardware LUT and i1Display Pro calibrated every few months (LG 34UM95-P), I can say with confidence that the QD-OLED has it beat in the creator profile. SDR is what I use 95% of the time, I don't even game at HDR but infrequently watch HDR content instead on mine, and SDR is absolutely perfect.

SDR is only imperfect if you are one of those people who leave Windows HDR mode on at all times. It should not be left on when not watching HDR content as Windows is crap at SDR content when HDR is enabled, or if you are using some weird colour icc profile in Windows for SDR which messes up SDR appearance.

There is no contest either way, QD-OLED is superior to any IPS panel of equivalent screen size and resolution from the panels I have seen in person and calibrated myself (I've owned and used multiple 29, 34 and 27" IPS panels for reference).

I am surprised at that. I have an LCD sat next to a QD-OLED and even in SDR the OLED is fantastic. It makes the LCD look horrible. The blacks are striking on the OLED and the colours are out of this world. The LCD isn't a cheap one, either.
