worth upgrading from 8800gtx to 260gtx for 1650x1080?

Well have also owned a R8500, R9700Pro, R9800Pro, and X1900XTX, only skipped the 2000/3000 series simply because nvidias offering were just better.

This time is a little different though, all the talk of reduced microstuttering and great scaling means I at least have to give crossfire a try.

Well no, if you request an RMA soon enough it's basically no questions asked and it's processed within a few days, you usually get a week to send it back after you start the RMA process, so the only expensive is postage really and a very short wait for your monies back so you can do the same again with another e-tailer. ;)

That I didn't know :).

Yes, crossfire and even single card terms ATI have strong products this time. No more AA performance drops like before but to be fair it was a brand new architecture that we all have to be thankful for as it drove ATI to sort out R600 with RV670 (3800 series), which led to the dramatic price drop which ATI have carried on with the 4800 series. These prices and performances have led Nvidia to seriously rethink in terms of pricing their GTX cards which is great for everyone no matter who (Nvidia or ATI) they prefer.

Edit:
Let us know what you think of the 4850's v the 280 you had should be pretty interesting.

lol - It was on my mind too :p.

How are you enjoying the Crossfire 4850s?. My friend has two 4870s and I know that is faster than the GTX 280 but how are you fairing the 4850s against the GTX 280 you had?.

Not really had long to test them but a quick 3dmark vantage run gave me 10938 with [email protected] which is OK considering there at stock, only games tested so far are Crysis and COD4, Crysis wasnt even playable at the same settings I used on my GTX280, framerate drops were allot worse, COD4 felt was about the same but it stuttered a little and screen flickered, tried to start some UT3 but got a BSOD, and then another after restarting..

Might do a reinstall of vista tomorrow if I get the time.

Not worth it really for that res.

The 4870 would be a nice path to follow and will not break the bank.

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this but I think it's worth pointing out that a gtx280 or 4870x2 would allow for an easy monitor upgrade down the road, and also offer a slightly extended life when more demanding games eventually arrive.

I got my 8800gtx at launch, even tho I only gamed at 1280. I was flamed and told it was overkill, but that simply wasn't true in my experience. Later on I did upgrade to a 1650 display, and the card is still doing well for me almost 2 years since :)

If you can afford it, and you plan on more upgrades, a faster card might be well worth a look.

Aye I think you need to do something because if review sites can pull off better scores than you can, then you know something is really wrong lol :).

Crysis won't get any better I feel though as the GTX 280 is king in that game.

Nope, there pretty even, they trade blows in reviews, good thing about evenly matched cards is a it's easy to spot the fanboys as they go out of their way to recommend one over the other. ;)

i understand loyalty to your local pub or businesses where you personally know some people or are friendly with them.

but why would anyone be loyal to ATI/NVIDIA/AMD/INTEL they are all huge companies and at the end of the day, if 1 card is better than another for the same price you buy the better one > .

---

saying that the 4870 is better than the 260 because it is; Cheaper, Beats the 280 GTX in some games, Handles AA nicely, and has good overclocking ability and has GDDR5 memory which should overclock nicely as its clocked low.

is it worth upgrading at that res?, depends what games you play

if your on Vista then YES,
if your on XP and dont play crysis non stop like a total mug then NO

i say on vista yes because my 8800GT destroy's an 4850 on vista and as its not much slower than an 4870, it might beat that too, or match it minimum..

unless there are some extreme ways to remove every single thing they have added extra to vista compared to XP.

I'm sorry, but something must have been wrong with your 4850, as my 4870 destroys my 8800GT I had that was overclocked and my 4870 is at stock... A 4850 is not far behind a 4870 tbh, I am also in Vista, but Vista and XP the 4870 destroys the 8800GT.

If I had the money and was not moving to manchester soon I'd get a GTX280 though now as its coming down and its nice to have one of the fastest things on the market.

I would say at the res you are using then an 8800GTX is upto the job. Only worth upgrading if you know you are getting a larger res monitor shortly say to 24"1920 x1200. At 1680 x 1050 would say that even an 8800GTX is overkill.

If you must upgrade then I would say get the ATI 4870 as better value for money at the moment. When the die shrink of the GTX 2x0 series is out that may change or may not, but at the moment I would put my own money for an ATI.

Personal GPU History

GF 256 DDR, GF3 Ti 200, ATI 9700Pro, GF 6800U, 7900GTX SLI,

so I am pretty Nvidia biased but even I would say to buy ATI at the moment unless you simply must have Nvidia.

ok guys,
thank you all for the replies!

right now to tell you the truth there is not one game that I play and 8800GTX cant handle. Even Crysis -which I have finished btw- does play well (with some sacrifices).
Personally I would lean more to Nvidia because:
1) less power consumption in idle
2) more stable drivers

I would really be interested in opinions about ATI drivers quality...

thank you

This man speaketh words of wisdom. I've got myself a 4870 for gaming at 1680x1050 and expect it to last two years or so.

Edit: Reason to upgrade? X1900xt at my res starting to give flaky performance.

What a ridiculous statement. Crysis is a broken engine, haven't you spotted the trend that the crysis engine is literally the biggest piece of poop to be released for years? Even the developers have abandoned it...

It says a lot about a "game" when it is used purely as a benchmark, the gameplay itself is nothing special :)

crysis is the best looking game out todate. yes current generation hardware struggles on it at max settings but thats why you dont run it at max to make it playable you scale your settings to medium or less.

im not a games programmer so i cant decompile the game code and assess its efficiency to say if its a badly coded game or not. and i seriously doubt you have that kind of knowledge to make that statement.
