WOW's addictiveness.....................

Just seen this on an American WoW forum about recruiting into the current world best guild, although it is fairly old:

I do feel genuinely sorry for these people as they must be so messed up in real life, addiction isnt the word!

That kind of dedication has got them along way though, but for what that means in an online game to the average joe, you might say its sad, but right now they are 2 bosses further than anyother guild in the world, and in Naxx that means a lot... its a nice accomplishment i'd say.

Hmmm I'm surprised by reading that people here got bored of the "end game" content. It really depends on what your end game actually consisted of.

I'm one of the lucky ones I suppose as I run a guild on the Aggramar realm (horde side) and we are definitely an end-game raiding guild.

If you have seen and taken part in the encounters in Blackwing lair for example, I think very few people would describe them as boring :)

I'd say a good 90% of the attraction now is beating these encounters with your friends and that's why I keep playing. There is certain amount of pride in being able to beat something like Nefarian - hopefully someone else reading this post will know what I'm on about ;)

Multi-hour long raids got very repetitive for me, I no longer felt like I was playing a game but rather a calculated way in which to deal the most damage at the right time whilst keeping other people alive.

RPGs for me are more about character development and stroyline progression, not beating bosses/levels.

End-game just doesn't do it for casual gamers not wanting to instance run or pvp.

What it seems a lot of you dont understand is that their is a social world inside this game, those several hour sessions are spent with other people, talking, joking, or in my case - planning to meet.

Through WoW I have made a bucketload of friends, kept the friends I live close to and still see them regularly, I have met the new friends in the real world also and had great times OUT of the game, with these 'addicted geeks with serious problems'.

And yet I (and the aforementioned new friends) frequently spend more than 4 hours raiding a 40man instance for sweet epic rings of <insert fantasy element here>. Several days per week. My guild raids Naxxramas, the current hardest encounter in WoW. That might give an indication of my play time.

I have a great job, a loving fiance, many wonderful friends... I guess I am just a complete loser in many of your eyes, but to me its similar to spending a night on the town (which I still do, despite my 'problem') with my friends.

Yes, i fully understand that they are the best in the business and I respect that but what they demand (70 hours a week +), means they litrally cant do anything else in life other than play the game and perhaps sleep, and thats it, proving the games addictive nature.

Proving the PLAYERS addictive nature.
The game is no more than a game, addiction comes from the only source available - the human.

Its different when theres a chemical element involved (cigarettes, drugs, incohol).

Not so many people can smoke all they like without becoming addicted, thats not too common at all.
But its a tiny percentage of players who become addicted to a game (if that werent true we'd have heard about it a lot more, rather than a few shock cases in the news).

I don't, I'm the same with forums, pretty much all of my friends I met through clubbing forums online.

When I started WoW, I was playing and skyping with some mate's from here, supercow and chevens, but I was more casual than them and they eventually went off into high level guilds.

I joined a guild, but most people were european and I didn't really get to make much in the way of friendships due to my erratic gaming sessions.

I'm the better for it though, I have a few months of life when I accomplished very little. Work, sleep, a little clubbing and WoW.

Now I have made progression within my career, have a gf, got my own radio show online, have been focusing on my mixing and other stuff.

I'd still like to play WoW from time to time, but with a monthly fee and limited solo options, it isn't viable.

Guildwars bores me as well :(

All perfectly accomplishible whilst playing WoW. I'm living proof! /cartman

1 out of how many?

Not exactly perfectly accomplishable :p

I did stop spending time trawling the WoW forums for talents specs at work and I've even forgotten the name of the database with all the drops/creatures/maps/etc that everyone uses, hehehe

I did enjoy the patch that gave druid feral form some loving, me and my mates headed off to Silithus (Pally, preist, druid) and just ran around slaughtering people, was awesome, stealthy cat slicing up clothies :D

Well im not exactly in the same field, but in my own way I've done just as well professionally :)

All these horror stories about people throwing their lives away are awful sure, but pigeonholing everyone who plays "more than an hour, more than 3 hours, more than what-frickin-ever" is just ridiculous.

I agree, I generally like to put in at least an hour into whatever game I decide to play, unless I am just killing some time by a quick fragfest :D

Hello, my name's Rilot and I'm addicted to WoW.

I only started playing 3 months ago because the missus was constantly playing it. I've now got a lvl60 mage, a lvl35 hunter, lvl20 pally and I'm levelling a druid up for our guild. He's only lvl20 but should have him to 60 in a couple of months.

My friends think I'm mad, well, the ones who don't play WoW anyway.

I'm raiding tonight and I'm worried that I might get stuck in traffic on the way home and miss the start.

I'm very sad.

Yes the games addictive, but as long as you still manage to work, at least part time, and speak, and sometimes go out with real life friends, I see no issue with it, as tbh, its better for your body than being a cigarette or drug addict.

its abit mental, i always thought it was exaggerated with all the evercrack stuff etc.

when i was younger yes i was addicted to gaming, still kinda but its a bit strange reading some of the posts.

although there are some positive sides, e.g i remember in the news how some WoW guild raised enough money via donations for one of their members medical fees. which i thought was ace!

i suppose you do meet new friends and you are socialising to a certain extent when playing a MMORPG.

end of the day, its up to an individual what they prefer doing, different people different tastes. i always find it stupid when someone calls some people "geeks or losers" because they dont go and get plastered or clubbing etc.

however, if it starts to excessively affect your work/home life/hygiene/eating habits etc then perhaps its time to sit down and reflect abit.

Different people have different opinions, it's a fact of life. I find Blackwing Lair exceedingly boring and would much rather not spend several nights doing the same thing over and over again.

Death and Taxes are currently recruiting one Mage to join our guild. We will consider cross server applicants. Read carefully our requirements to make sure you are capable of fulfilling what we want:

-Only applicants with full tier 2.5 and above will be considered. We are verging on only accepting applicants with 3 pieces of tier 3.
-Raid times: We raid 7 days of the week between 17:00 - 01:00 EST. We expect at least a 90% raid attendance over your 1 month trial period and beyond.
-Raid preparation: At least 2 hours of preparation needs to be done before each raid. Each member has a certain amount of pots/herbs/food buffs etc that MUST be provided to the guild bank weekly as well as your own preparation.
-Talent specs - Your class leader will advise you of what raid spec to use, accepted applicants should be willing to change their spec as told.
-Computer and internet connection - If you frequently disconnect or if your computer freezes regularly, please dont apply to us.
-Attitude - We operate a strict no drama policy, whiners, anti-wipers, frequent afk'ers need not apply.

Please do NOT attempt to ask questions to the GM/officers in game, you will be ignored and blacklisted. All applicants must use this forum solely as a communicant.

We know our rules are strict, we know this causes controversy but this is what comes with being in a world leading guild.

Many thanks.

Jesus Christ! What kind of life is that?

Its all too common. You want the best gear, you have to put the time in. Thats not a game thats a sentence to be strapped to your chair and die a slow, painful, lonely death. Glad im out.

I feel like writing a mock application on their website enquiring into what salary/benefits/pension scheme they give in return! :p
