X-Com 2 - Announced

Now, unlike these "soldiers" , I am not trained in the art of shooting but I am 100% sure that I could manage to successfully hit someone with a shotgun whilst standing 1ft away. IMO, if you are stood adjacent to someone, it should be a 100% hit chance.

The % chance to hit is based on more than just whether or not your soldier can point the gun towards the enemy... Even if they are aiming perfectly the enemy might be able to dodge out of the way at the very last moment or something...

The game wouldn't be as good if you didn't occasionally miss very high chance shots (and occasionally hit very low ones)... it's designed to try and make you play strategically and it works - 95% chance to hit? How much health does your soldier have, can they take the return hit if they miss? Are your other troops setup in good flanking positions and do they still have moves? If you can't affort the 5% possibility of a miss should you be moving into cover this turn instead?

Without that the game would be so much more bland...

I'm getting really bad frame rates. 4fps at base and up to 20fps in mission. Game also seems locked at 30fps.

Only played it for 33 minutes and already looking for some tweaks.

Make sure you disable V-Sync in-game and as it uses double-buffering (instead of your typical triple-buffering for whatever reason), so if you don't meet the threshold requirement (e.g. 60), your FPS will tank down to the next available threshold, which is 30 FPS.

But yeah in general the game is poorly optimised. Despite the 9 and even 10/10 reviews across the board, Steam's currently sitting at "only" 78% (well, in comparison). No doubt it's people complaining about performance issues. Hopefully there will be some sort of patch out soon, but I haven't heard anything.

I am also slightly suspicious that some things are hardcoded or something.

Take for example the mission I am currently on, with the codex. Now..I have a save game where the next time the codex gets shot, it will die. (it has 2 health left).

I have 3 soldiers in shooting range, the closest of these soldiers has a 63% chance to hit. I have so far reloaded that save game a total of 21 times (the point at which I have chosen to post - I will continue to reload and try after the post), in all 21 reloads, none of the 3 soldiers, including the one with the 63% to hit, is able to hit the codex in their following turn. In all 21 reloads, all 3 soldiers have missed with every shot.

Now, dont get me wrong, I'm liking the game and have been playing these games since the original UFO Enemy Unknown came out decades ago (and before that even, with its spiritual predecessors , Laser Squad and Rebel Star Raiders on the spectrum), its just I find it suspicious that in 21 tries that 63% chance hasnt landed a hit even once.

I started again... Yeah I never did the tutorial first time round!

A lot more of the game actually makes sense now. No idea why the tutorial didn't go the first time. I didn't have any options for Ironman this time though when starting a new game.

My squad of Lister, Rimmer, Cat and Kryten are doing quite well:)

I am certain that's how the enemy unknown / within worked, your decisons are hard coded to an extent in that case. Once you have made your move. If you save prior to shooting, the dice is rolled so to speak. So if you miss on the first shot, reloading the save will result in the same outcome which explains what you are seeing.

Anyone else have it where the game maxes out your CPU1 at 100% and makes the game slow to a crawl with stuttering sound etc? All other cores barely being used

980ti sli getting 30fps at 1440p with vsync on? lol, guess i better turn it off!

No sli sadly so it's just your single card powering it. Saying that a single 980ti should be fine with few very minor tweaks. Titan x is holding fine at 3440 x 1440 with most things maxed. Sucks just seeing the other two gpus twiddling their thumbs :(

That would certainly explain it yeah, makes sense.

If I remember correctly, once you beat the game, the last game would then give you an option to have every turn randomised. Civ has a similar option.

Anybody running this on a GTX970 at 1080? I'd be interested to know how it performs. I'm debating picking this up tonight.

Asked this last night but didnt get an answer...

I've heard reviewers talking about being able to tell that the location you're moving to has got line-of-sight on targets so you know before you move, does anyone know how this is achieved? i havent seen anything show up.

If you can see Aliens already, there are red marks on the tiles around them showing their visual range.

Yeah, not the concealed mode, after you're spotted.
They were suggested that when you're selecting a tile to move into you knew if it had line of sight on targets so you could take your shot. Im wondering whether i misunderstood it, and its not LOS but cover, if you move to cover where they can see you in a flanked position i think it shows it as a different colour. That i have seen (cant remember how it shows it, maybe its a coloured outline of the shield), but i thought they were suggesting there wouldnt be issues over moving only to find out that you cant see the target from that location, which is damn annoying.

When you put the mouse over a square to move to, a little target icon will appear to the left of the aliens' health bar if you have line of sight.
