X-Factor 2012

Agree with this. I also think though that you can never really know if someone really has true star quality until X-factor is over the a career really kicks in. it takes a special type of charisma and persona to keep the momentum going after a show like the X-factor ends, and I think it's after the first year when it really shows who can make it and who just doesn't have that special something in the end. X-factor gives people a solid platform to launch a career, and the best chance to make it that they can get... the rest I guess is down to them, how marketable they prove to be, and especially how they appeal to the public in the long-term.

Or maybe they just need to hire better songwriters? The members of the public that the X factor appeals to are simply not suited to long term appeal, when the next series comes out they've already forgotten about the previous years winner / finalists. The terms 'X factor' and 'Star quality' are just marketting words that mean 'we are looking for someone that will remain successful with rubbish music'. Never going to happen.

Loving the entertainment value of the X factor as a TV show is entirely different to realizing that it actually fails year after year at producing anything decent for its winner.

Personally as a fan, I don't think the show is about producing a lasting star (If it happens then it's a bonus).
The money that Cowell & Co make during the show will be way more than what the winning artist will make.
The show is purely entertainment and that's how I watch it.

Will young, Gareth Gates, the fat girl from Pop idol 2, Steve, G4, Shane Ward, Leona Lewis, and the rest of the hopefuls from all these shows, where is their music career today? Does anyone even remember them because I surely don't. Not one single memorable decent song between any of them, everything they were given is equivelent to Justin Beiber / Rebecca Black today.

Sorry to ignore most of your post but I just plain don't agree that to be a successful pop star you need to write your own songs or play your own instruments thats just a matter of taste plenty of big pop stars have never written a song in their lives they've just had great song writers behind them

What I really wanted to pick on was you list of examples of flops and laugh that you put Wil Young at number 1 when he clearly isn't a flop nobody has heard of in years he has 5 platinum Albums behind him in a 10 year career now I don't like his stuff and you clearly don't but he has been a very successful artists.

Exactly... clearly bhavv knows very little if he thinks Will Young and Leona Lewis haven't got a music career... sheer ignorance in that post. Same for the point about needing to be a songwriter to have a successful pop career... I imagine the percentage of Pop stars who write their own songs is relatively small.

Ditto

I didnt even mention Will Young or Leona Lewis in my post. I am aware that both of them have had mediocre success (0 grammies won between them correct?) ... and what about the other hundreds / thousands of hopefuls?

You dont need to write your own music if you can actually sing like Leona Lewis, Beyonce or Adele, even though the last two there have written some of their own music. However I've been watching clips on youtube of this years 'hopefuls', and no none of them are any better vocally than mediocre. And if you can actually sing great, you dont need to go on the X Factor at all.

And the percentage of 'pop stars' that are actually respectable artists is even smaller than the percentage that write their own material.

they've just had great song writers behind them

And that was the point of what I'm saying, the X Factor does not provide decent songwriters for any of their contestants, unless you think Elephant and Swagger Jagger are great world class songs.

Sometimes you make me  as to what point you are trying to make.

Right. So, out of 1000s of contestants, we have 1 person who writes and sings who own material. I shall give you that. Please name me a few more.

I'm sure that young Ella turned up to auditions and sang her own song didnt she? Not quite sure!

Looks like she is now on her way to live shows, quite impressive voice to.

I have to say there were honestly quite a few who were singing their own written material this year.

I normally bash x-factor and laugh at it to the mrs ( i still do when all the sob videos come on :p ) but must admit there is some good talent on this year

Leona Lewis, and the rest of the hopefuls from all these shows, where is their music career today? Does anyone even remember them because I surely don't..

Leona has a new album out right now?

How the hell have they mange to stretch the results from judges houses to one hour 20 mins? Even with the predictable crying and sob stories? Ad breaks?

It's an art! The uber gay guy is through. He can sing, but wow is he going to be irritating.

e: ^ lol

wtf has she put that mincer through for?

Quotas right ;)

Seriously though, he was the worst singer at bootcamp on the videos they showed. Joe Whelan didn't get through and he could actually sing and play an instrument.

Hell I might as well give it a go next year. Can sing as well as he can.

Rylan Clark getting through obviously has zero to do with vocals or music talent. Less than zero, in fact, compared to the other guys who went home. What a complete and utter ****.

Lucy Spraggan, however, made up for it as she is so unique that I honestly didn't think that she would be put through. A win for musical talent there.
