X79 Overclocking Guide

It will depend a bit on the quality of the memory controller on the cpu, number of slots populated and the RAM itself, I'm running mine at 9-10-10-21 @ 2133 with 1.065 vtt and 1.01 vccsa(imc on my board) but you could easily need upto 1.15. If your using 1.2+ and crashing still either the imc isn't upto it or the problem is elsewhere.

Morning...

When pushing for high ish! clocks on Sandybridge E. I get the odd 101 blue screen crash. Is this always down to lack of vcore or could it be down to something else?

Usually not enough vcore but can also be down to the delta between vcore, VTT and IMC(VCSSA) voltages. They shouldn't be too far from each other but also you can in rare cases get issues if one is too close - IIRC the usual advice is to keep both VTT and IMC fairly close together and neither more than 300mv less than the vcore. Don't exceed 1.15v on the additional voltages though unless on high end cooling and/or are prepared to replace the CPU if you kill it heh. (I know someone who reproduced premature degredation on 3820s with only 1.2 VTT :S).

129 x 35 on 125 strap. 1.35v Vcore, VCCIO and VTT 1.15- 1.2 XMP memory timings approx 2400 speed. Should be fine.
Ignoring the memory speed, would this still apply for a 4820K combined with 4x4GB kingston hyperX genesis 1600? Presently I've got it clocked up to 4.5GHz using 100 BLK and 1.225Vcore and temperatures so far have peaked at 58 on one core using linX. (the rest hit about 55-56)

The biggest stumbling block is the ram as i simply didn't have the budget to get anything better. It's not a matched set of 4, but 2 dual channel kits combined. (already owned a set of grey modules) The newer pair of modules have a tRFC of 208 vs the older ones being 128. The board seems to have used the xmp profile of the older modules, which i guess may hinder my attempts to overclock further.

What are the IMC's like on Ivy-E. I'm thinking about going for some super fast dimms but is it still hit and miss like with SBE whether or not I'll be able to hit them?

TBH I might just go with 2400 as anything over still gives crap returns doesn't it? Going to see what my 1866 modules can do at 1.7v firstly though.

What's more preferable 2133 or 2080 at 130blk for 4.8 ;).

Laxed offs timings but can't seem to get this stuff to post at 2400 at anything under 1.9 which is a bit crap.

I hate memory overclocking :(

Need smaller dimms

EDIT: Yep, these dimms don't want to do any more than 2333 without silly volts. Tried VTT /SA at sensible and non sensible levels. Time for smaller faster DIMMS

I'll pick up some faster stuff later in the week. Makes it easier :D

Could you give us some timings to try out Ian with the 32GBC10 kit just to make sure it's not me?

They're big dimms but it is the plat stuff so thought it would clock a little higher.

Currently at 130x37 4.8ghz

VRAM 1.65v 2080mhz 10-12-11-30 which is already laxed

For these cpu vcore is at 1.4v VCSAA @ 1.12 everything else in auto.

Rock solid at those settings at the moment but memory clocking still fraggles my lil head

Ian, I went for the C9 2133 1.5v Dom plat stuff. Any chance you can gauge whats best to try now?

Memory clocking is still very much new to me.

Had a quick play last night and on 125 strap I can get 130 BCLK 2400+ @ 1.65v 10-11-12-31-CR2 - tried tighter primaries but had a few BSODS

VCCSA @ 1.15

VVT @ 1.1

CPU 4810mhz @ 1.4v

Are the secondary timings worth touching on these? or more importantly will upping VCCSA / RAM V allow for tighter timings possibly? I don't foresee being able to hit 2666 24/7

but that was never the aim. Would rather go for tighter timings.

Cheers

hello OCuk.

I am Erik. New to over clocking so I came here hoping to find some answers.
I have posted around the web but no one either knows the answers i am searching for or i write to much, so i will simplify.
I have a sabertooth x79 with a 3930k and 64 gigs of gskill ripjawsz 1600.

I have completed my first over clock, though most of you will feel it was easy, i took the journey to understand the process of over clocking.
i am at 4.0ghz, 1.168vcore, .868vccsa, vtt1.05 and my pll at 1.5875.
I am stable.

for my very first question, anybody out there got a sabertooth board? and if so is there any software that will read all the voltage measurements from the saber?

i have tried hwinfo, hwmonitor, occt's monitors, the asus ai suite, nothing reports it. i usually get vcore and then my 12,5,3.3 rails.
on some monitors i get vin3(hwmonitor) and on others i get vcore, vin0 vin 1,3,4,6.
I would really like to know what these values are as they do not have names and its hard to spot who is who.

My purpose is to turn down my vccsa voltage to its lowest operating point, but I would have to set an offset blindly as I can not see the vccsa voltage. right now i have it locked at .868 manual.

I have other questions regarding the 3930k voltage deltas but those will come in a bit.

Thanks for reading and helping.
Erik

Here is my 24/7 settings

4960 @ 4.5

2133 C8-10-10-27-T1-88 @ 1.6v

Vcore offset 010+

VCCSA @ 1.0

VTT @ 1.0

PLL @ 1.4v

hi mjfrosty i have the same ram cant seem to get it to work above 2133

oc is at 4.3 would ideally like to hit 4.5 but lack the knowledge to get it any higher,

is that 4.5 of yours the only settings you have changed.

thanks
