Xbox 360 already hanging

I presume that if you bring a console indoors into a warm room, from outside where it's been sitting in freezing temperatures for hours, and turn it on straight away, permanent damage could be done to the electronics? That's what I've always thought anyway which is why I let hardware I buy acclimatise before powering it up.

This was definitely something that was mentioned upon the launch of 360 because the consoles were kept in storage for a period of time which was very cold. It's also cold in the back of a lorry, so turning it straight on in a warm lounge will just accelerate the risk of damage.

Yeah I did try it this morning, no luck.
If I'd done some serious damage, then surely Condemned would have problems too?

I've just rung Woolworths, and they'll refund no questions, and they might have another in stock today! :D

Fridays are stock days for most companies, which is quite fortunate. I really hope you get lucky with this.

I'm at work today that's the problem.
The real issue is persuading my Dad to go down town for me to buy the new console. Then I can take my busted one back on Saturday. :p

Condensation is very unlikely to cause permanent damage to an electronic piece of equipment partly due to the silkscreen on PCBs - its partly designed to stop this sort of damage ('environmental factors').

9 times out of 10 if you've drenched an electronic piece of equipment in water, given sufficient time to completely dry out, it will work once again without any faults.

Hangs and graphical corruption are usually caused by a damaged trace on the PCB, bad power supply, or a faulty IC (such as the CPU or GPU itself). This is obviously a permanent issue unless specific items are replaced - requiring a return to MS :(

mine hung last night after playing PGR3 for an hour. and for the first time game me error lights. went to turn it back on and 3 quadrents were flashing red, just the top right off. thought it was overheating so i left it off for about 30 mins. turned it on, still borked.

so went on the net and found this error means this is apprantly a hardware error. did what the microsfot site advised. unplug all AV leads and power leads and then put everything back in and it worked.

little bit concerned about this. these machines seem to be falling on there arse a fair old bit. my last console. the trusty old dreacast never crashed once in years of torturous abuse. this thing however. well PG0 crashes at will and now PGR3 :-( not a happy bunny

In hindsight it would have been much more sensible to wait for the bugs to be ironed out but I was suffering from a case of the "I want's" :o

Touch wood mine has been ok so far apart from the locking up when acessing gamertags in PGR problem which seems to be common and more of a software thing.

Even if the quality of the first units was questionable I think any problems should arise withing the first 6 months so I wouldn't worry about gremlins cropping up after your 12 month warrenty is up.

EDIT: another poll of "have you had a duff 360" would be quite interesting now we're further down the line.

Really feel for all you guys who are having problems, I know I would be so gutted if anything happened to mine.

My mate has been telling me that his 360 keeps beeping at him, like an onboard pc speaker doing a reset! I have never heard my 360 beep!!

He also says that his 360 makes 'dinking' sounds when heating up or cooling down, the same as a car makes after a thrashing

If its the same noise as I think then thats not uncommon with electrical stuff. Its just the components expanding and contracting (very marginally) due to heating up and cooling down.

Good news! Rang Woolies, and they have one more Premium left. They said they'll put it asside, and I can come in and do a direct swap tomorrow morning!

This time i'll take it home, leave it to warm up, then hopefully I'll be away! :D

demand damages, does not mean that it is guarenteed for that time though.
That just means that if it breaks within that time u can get compensation, which after 2 years could equated to 40 quid on a 360

First option is repair or replacement as it happens.
If it goes to court it becomes the decision of the Judge as to whether or not it is reasonable to expect an Xbox 360 at nearly £300 to break down after 2 years from what is a common manufacturing defect.
Clearly that is NOT reasonable and you'd be entitled to a replacement.

I had a retailer recently try to fob me off regarding a 3 year old £600 cooker.
No extended warranty. A few calls to consumer direct and a 7 day notice saw a cheque on my doorstep to cover the full cost of the repair.

Up to you really, either get to know your statutory consumer rights or fork out for warranties that you don't need.

Yes that would be interesting, everytime I think I will get one I read more and more people with problems. Unfortunately I only know one guy at work whose got one and his is a duffer too.

Especially as they haven't actually released that many, it has to be a worry for M$ the number of returns. Anyone have any idea of the number of failures. My current pc mag read in the hot or not section had the xbox in box catergories. Hot because its the nuts and not because your damn lucky to get a fully working one.

Right if it's struggling already, whats it going to be like when there are actually games that push the hardware. Thats a big worry isn't it? I think I will sit on my wallet for a little longer ;)

Well picked up my replacement Xbox 360 this morning, and so far so good!

Managed to play around 10 minutes of COD2 and no signs of a crash!
And Condemned is still working A ok. :D
