**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

I am in a predicament

I'm not excited about the PS4

I am excited about the XBOX One

Family (esp the kids) love the Kinect, especially Kinect Sports

I have fibre broadband, never buy used games and all the exclusive titles on xbox are the games I really enjoy. Looking at the PS4 selection...to me personally, is a bit meh

You'd think the obvious choice for me would be the xbox.

HOWEVER....

I HATE DRM. It's goes against my core principals in dictating what you can and can't do. I do want one of the consoles for Christmas as I'm a tech enthusiast and will desperately need my fix of hardware. Do I bend over and take it from Microsoft, or do I stick with my principals, buy the PS4 but wish I had bought the xbox (which is what will happen)

I'd buy the Playstation for now, then after about six months or so after hopefully Microsoft have attained some clarity, sell it then buy the Xbox one.

The disc of a game will last for decades and you or your kids in the future will be able to play single player games just like you could with every other console that has come before it. How long will Microsoft keep on there servers?

I thought they only lasted about 20 years? But even if they last longer they have to deal with the general wear and tear of life. If you have the data on a hard drive or the cloud there should be no problem with an infinite life for the data.

But yeah Microsoft is the problem they have to give people some kind of guarantee, that your data will be maintained for as long as you want.

Here's a quote that seems to clear a few things up about Kinect....

“We take it very seriously. We aren’t using Kinect to snoop on anybody at all. We listen for the word ‘Xbox on’ and then switch on the machine, but we don’t transmit personal data in any way, shape or form that could be personally identifiable to you, unless you explicitly opt into that.”

That quote suggests you have to turn on the ability for MS to monitor you, rather than explicitly turn it off. Assuming that's true, the people bitching about how Kinect will bug your entire life unless you turn it off can finally shut up.

just read the ps4 don't come with there playstation eye camera and it will be priced at $60 dollars wich will mean prob bout 50quid here. so that is were the price diff id between the ps4 and X1

they wont bother to read that, I posted a few things reguarding ps4 and drm but seems people only want to hear the x1 is bad and got drm

"unless you explicitly opt into that"

I can imagine it now - machine boots and gives you several pages of t's & c's which nobody ever reads and just agrees to which we have all done in the past

Yes but it's wont be even nearly as integrated with the system as Kinect for the Xbox One is.

I personally will not be buying the PS4 eye camera as I have no interest in it. Would have been better had Microsoft offered this as a choice but they way they have build this machine kind of makes that impossible.

But could turn out better in the long run as it can be integrated in games for everybody, if they make use of it properly that is

I think it was good of MS to include it. This way its safe for the devs to assume that all xboxone owners have the kinnect.

There's a new interview with Phil Spencer on Eurogamer http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2013-06-13-the-big-interview-microsoft-studios-phil-spencer-discusses-xbox-one

Some interesting points but this one stood out for me WRT Indie Games:

Eurogamer: I want to ask about indie games and why you decided not to enable self-publishing when so many of your competitors and other places do?

Phil Spencer: Today what we've said is we don't have a self-publishing system in place. But what we do look at: we support the indie development community, we've had over 200 developers ship over 400 games on our platform; over a billion dollars in revenue for independent developers selling content through our ecosystem. From the beginning of Xbox Live we have been committed to indie games, and we will continue to do that. Things like self-publishing, things like discovery of content, things like promotion - these are things that we are committed to, and our platform will evolve.

Not built around it but its part of the console the same way my camera is on my phone. Great to use if I want but I don't have to, but it's there none the less

Then they could have made it optional really. Anyway, this could go on and on so lets not :p

Either way I hope we see some great games and Microsoft convinces me to purchase one!

Anyone fancy attempting to guess what devs will do with a mandatory Kinect install other than what they are doing now? I dont see the install base as an issue, Im sure someone here mentioned Kinect did way over 20million sales (is that just X360 or maybe Windows too?) so its not like they dont have the a massive captive audience already.

I do think its a lot of hyperbole when people say 'Kinect will be much better once its mandatory' I just dont see that magically improving the situation. I look at six axis and think wow 7+ years, 70million of you out there, yep developers still using it :p

Kinect just means more kinect games with the same limited experience outside those game types. If it could be different why hasnt MS sold us the difference, they showed 2 kinect games off stage and nothing on the E3 stage, to me it makes sense if you are making people pay for it rather than ignore it, sell it big time...

I know they are damned if they do and damned if they dont, but it wasnt me that decided to make it a mandatory peripheral, MS did, so why arent they embracing it? Make it a feature, not a tick box :/

EDIT: Im kinda grumpy, but tbh far more so at the people that give that wishy-washy reasoning than anything...

I imagine after the slating MS got at the Xbox launch the last thing they really wanted to do was turn up at E3 and list loads of Kinect games :D

Yet you have to wonder did they really want to turn up with mandatory Kinect and no real USP why its there? I agree theres a stigma attached to it, but not selling it isnt going to endear MS to people that dont really want it or selectively think they are having to pay extra for it. Sitting in no mans land helps no one...
