**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

It doesn't. It has an HDMI input so that you can switch to your TV box (e.g. Freeview box, Sky+ box) through the console. There is no built-in tuner.

The point being that if you don't have sky or virgin, and just have freeview that's built in to your tv, this whole thing is utterly pointless for you.

Some more detailed info here:

More detailed? Sorry but I got to 5 minutes and gave up :D

Answer the ****ing question about always on :D

He comes out with some old politician patter about people getting hung up in the details. Do their employees not actually know how thing is going to work?

Just tell us the facts, no some old guff about wanting to extract the most from being connected.

Correct. But presumably the HDMI input could be used for anything, including another console. So if you had a PS4 running at the same time, you could plug it through the One and say 'Xbox, PS4' and play PS4 instead. ;)

One reason I got the xbox over the ps3

You bought a 360 because PS3 had multimedia features??!?!

:o

There's been a serious case of retardation in this thread.

You do realise that the price premium of the PS3 over the 360 was down to the fact it contained a Bluray drive? Not that it had additional software features. Christ Almighty! How in a million years can you seriously say that one of the reasons you didn't buy a PS3 is because it had extra features that essentially wouldn't cost you anything and their use was entirely optional.

Actually THINK about what you post before you do so.

You could get an external freeview box I suppose but it all seems pointless to me, it's just Microsoft trying to re-invent the wheel again. Innovating for the sake of innovation rather than any real usefulness/necessity.

This fee for playing pre-owned games, does it go to the developer or MS? If it goes to the developer then I'm happy with that. I often feel that they loose out to the retailer in the pre-owned market!...I also suspect that it will go to MS.

One reason, it was an easy choice for me between those 2 consoles. Nothing drew me to the ps3.this is more like little draws me to either

Arguably the most interesting thing in all of this is the dual-OS + hypervisor software setup behind the Xbox One. With the Windows kernel running alongside the Xbox OS, I wonder how much of a stretch it would be to one day bring the same setup to PCs. Well before the Xbox One hits the end of its life, mainstream PC APUs will likely be capable of delivering similar perormance. Imagine a future Surface tablet that was capable of doing everything your Xbox One can do. That's really the trump card in all of this. The day Microsoft treats Xbox as a platform and not a console is the day that Apple and Google have a much more formidable competitor. Xbox One at least gets the software architecture in order, then we need PC/mobile hardware to follow suit and finally for Microsoft to come to this realization and actually make it happen. We already have the Windows kernel running on phones, tablets, PCs and the Xbox, now we just need the Xbox OS across all platforms as well.

As always, an excellent analysis from AnandTech. Being able to run the Xbox OS on different devices is a very intriguing concept.

The “I don’t” of the two sides:

Xbox One:
I don’t want a camera looking at me all the time
I don’t want to use Kinect
I don’t want to use voice commands or silly hand gestures
I don’t want it to be a media hub
I don’t want fantasy American football
I don’t want to “snap” things
I don’t want a VCR looking case
I don’t want Skype
I don’t want to pay to play online
I don’t want to play a fee to play 2nd hand games

PS4:
I don’t want a stupid Playstation eye looking at me all the time
I don’t want to use a wand with a giant coloured orb on the top of it.
I don’t want to connect to Facebook or any social media.
I don’t want a freaking touchpad on the control pad
I don’t want to have a share button to record videos
I don’t want people dropping into to my games to stalk (I mean watch)
I don’t want it to learn my habits and download demos/games for me in advance.
I don’t want a stupid childish version of Ratchet and Clank

I ran out of other stuff that most people seem to be moaning about. Feel free to add more ;)

TLDR: There’s cons for both "current" announcements. Just give me a "games console" ! I want to be able to plug it into the TV put a game into the console and play. None of this other BS !

(I will still most likely buy both :p )

This sums up my situation pretty much spot on. After buying the kinect on launch, trying it with every game available I sold it after 9 months as it was just sat gathering dust. I have a HTPC with XBMC and I doubt very much any console with ever play everything that does let alone look as nice.

All I want is a powerful, quite games console.

After saying all that, I have still pre ordered both the PS4 and Xbox One straight after the launch announcements though :D

Its 19 days to E3 so they were not going to reveal everything today. They get this out of the way so it can just be games games games.

Stripping away the fanboyism the Xbox and PS4 are pretty much identical. They both have a dual analog controller, they both play blu-ray, they will both play games, they will both have some exclusives, they will both stream media, they will both have some home entertainment features.

On paper the hardware might be different but unless you have both side by side you'd never know it.

The interesting part was the tone that the two reveals by sony and Msoft set. Sony was all about the games less about the other stuff, eg not showing the console. Yesterday was more about other stuff and less about the games. (would be interested to know how much of yesterday was set by the sony reveal earlier)

When the dust has settled and the fans have wiped the rabid outraged foam from their mouths they will see two powerful gaming systems that do pretty much the same job, with some features that you will never use but the truth is the line between them is no where near as hard as some people make out.

No no, you've just made the assertion that additonal, cost-free multimedia features were one of the reasons that you chose a 360 over a PS3.

Retract that statement or continue looking like an idiot.

Not only that. It wasn't a deal breaker. But it helped in the decision

Would you not buy a car because it has built in Sat nav?

So many purist in this thread is unreal.

I have a 360 and you know what, I only play games on it, single player, i don't have XBL, so i don't use any of the netflix or BBC iPlayer or use it to watch any media.

I didn't throw it in the bin because it can also do those other things. I use it for what I want it for, that's it. Having the other features there doesn't bother me one bit.

Why does it bother some people ?

Those are the reasons I don't think the xbox one is for me

The reasons I went for an xbox 360 over a PS3 are numerous

I Would choose the option not to have it. There is that option. Also if there wasn't that option I would still buy the car as I would need it for work.

I don't need the console

that do pretty much the same job

They play the same games (excluding exclusives).

Only one has the full motion and voice interaction that Kinect brings.

Only one has full TV integration.

Sony were all about games as they had nothing else to discuss. They outlined their "instant on" and "Sharing" features and that was the limit of the additional features the PS4 offers.

Microsoft has other stuff to intorduce, like the new Kinect, the TV functionality, the tie in with SmartGlass, the 3 seperate OS.

They both play games. But Xbox One does more over and above that.

Careful, there's far too much sense in your post for this thread.
