I totally hear that point regarding quality of gameplay and that is number 1 priority but is it not disappointing to hear that games are largely rendering at 720p? I know the difference isn't massive at tele sitting distance but it is a bit meh. Here's to hoping there's significant improvements to be had. That said moving from 720p60 to 1080p60 is going to require a lot of improvements to be found. I can't see it.

It doesn't bother me as much as it does others, primarily as I've never been one to want/need the best graphics. When I'm sat playing Xbox 360 games, I couldn't tell you whether it was 1080p, 720p, 576p or any other res upscaled. It's never been something I've hugely cared about. I've been the same in the PC market for the last 15 years, as I've always owned a mid-range card and never a cutting edge card.

Would I like all the Xbox One games to be 1080p60? Yes, of course I would, but I'm not going to let the graphics spoil my fun just because the PS4 games look a little (or lot) better, just like the PS4 owners won't let the graphics ruin their fun, knowing that PC games look even better again. As long as the gameplay is great and it plays nice and smooth, I'm a happy chappy.

For me it boils down to your last point - as long as it plays smooth.

From all this, I get the impression the PS4 will keep up with future advancements far better, while the Xbox may likely start to suffer frame rate issues - which is the most annoying thing for me about current gen games.

It's not a guarantee, but I do feel more secure in purchasing the PS4 for that reason.

I greatly expect resolution on both machines will fall to 720p over time.
There were games on current gen that launched at 1080p, majority early games at 720p and what happened? by the end the majority were sub 720p because the dev's wanted the extra power for bells and whistles.
The majority of people (remembering we are not the majority population here) probably use 720p sets, and even if everyone did have 1080p a lot of people cant tell the difference or even care what resolution things are running at. Developers wont sacrifice effects for some magical 1080p number that most don't care about at the expense of things that everyone does seem to go giddy for - lots of sparkly effects and whatever else.

Yeh i think there's pretty much 0 chance of PS4 ever having to drop to 720p for the majority of games.

Anyway for the lols:

The whole 1080p lack of power thing is a little disappointing but its isn't a deal breaker. If it was just down to the horse power then no doubt my first stop would be the PS4 but I've always hated the DS3 and found PlayStation Network to be dire. With any luck those things have improved, but the games line-up (for me) hasn't. Of the exclusive titles I really want to play that have already been announce only 1 of them on the PS4 and 6 are on the XB1, power concerns aside its a no brainer.

Also with my eyesight at playing distance the resolution difference are negligible. :D

That's why I'm happy I'll have both consoles. If it turns out I'm wrong and Xbox performance doesn't really improve over time (which I'm still sure it will), then I'll just buy everything on the PS4 and use the Xbox for the exclusives.

What res is Dead Rising going to run at?

Hoping Forza is still 1080 @ 60 right?

DR3 is 720p, but as it started life as an Xbox 360 game I don't think it's overly surprising.

Forza is still 1080p60, and looking rather stunning :)

We shall see. As i said, the majority of console gamers want to see huge-ass explosions, fire and smoke everywhere and OTT effects constantly. Resolution means nothing to them. And no developer will sacrifice this for some mythical 1080p number.

There will be no need to lower the resolution to get desired graphical effects on PS4, just look at Killzone, and that's only a launch title.

The problem is that with the power difference between the consoles there will be no need to lower the resolution to get desired graphical effects on PS4, just look at Killzone, and that's only a launch title.

Yeah, at the moment. As i said most titles this gen started at 720p and ended up sub 720p. You think all the gfx improvement over time was purely down to better hardware knowledge? you'd be shocked how much you can add by dropping res just a fraction.

Yes I'll also be having a rather expensive contingency box plugged into the Xbox One HDMI pass-through port. Can't resist new shiny even if I only use it for the weekend of the 29th until Planetside comes out :p

As Davey said, yes i expect a few games ending up at 900p or other strange resolutions below 1080p, but there's no way they are going to end up all the way back down to 720p on PS4 (there may be 1 or 2 extreme cases only)

I understand those people who are getting both consoles or must have the exclusive launch games, even though it seems a little short sighted to make a decision purely on a systems launch games.

Graphics do matter, this is what the next generation is all about. If consoles are lasting 6-7 years they need to be pushing the envelope as best they can. I wouldn't of minded if Sony made it £80 more expensive and put an even stronger GPU in there but obviously that's a business decision and more will fly off the shelves at £350.

What kind of particle/graphics effects can we expect from PS4 if the resolution for a game is set at 720p, they would have a crazy amount of resources available to it. Even scarier is what kind of resolution would the XB1 version be to have to match it.

I'm a 360 fan and never really played PS3, I was all coming on board the new XB1 but I don't feel their system is value for money and don't like been forced to pay for Kinect. It should be a generation leap not a generation half leap.

£80 more for a system with a substantial difference in performance is too much. For those on the fence the decision is easy. Very disappointing from Microsoft, they could have easily competed.

If graphics matter why is Minecraft a run away success? Also Hotline Miami?

How can you judge if they are pushing the envelope on launch software? Let's judge it fairly at the end of the generation before we start with any hyperbole.

I think this, exactly, is one of the deeper issues. To me, next gen is about far more than just graphics improvements. What kind of AI can an 8core CPU give us? How much more complex can we get the RPGs and open worlds? Games where damage is more than just more damage and less health.

Main reason its not a concern for me, I have my pc, if i wanted to play ghosts or Bf4 id do that on the best looking thing, it would be pc.

As long as the console exclusives are good then the console will get plenty of use.

For me its not just the two launch exclusives its the next 12 months of exclusives. Yes I love the Dead Rising games so DR2 was a driver and also the Forza franchise. It's games like Titan Fall, D3, Quantum Break and Halo that I have my sights on over the next year and only Planetside 2 on PS4.

I'm looking forward to setting up both under my telly, but the immediate future belongs to XB1 for me :)

Both of those could run on a 360 so why bother upgrading?

What are you paying for if its not more power / better graphics?

Nintendo got slated for an under-powered 'next gen' console and so should MS. They should cut the price IMO.
