**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

What kind of particle/graphics effects can we expect from PS4 if the resolution for a game is set at 720p, they would have a crazy amount of resources available to it. Even scarier is what kind of resolution would the XB1 version be to have to match it.
Well that would be 50% less pixels to throw about compared to 1080p, you just wouldnt need to use that extra power on effects unless you are doing something technically performance sapping for the sake of it (think ray tracing the lighting system) or moved that towards other game systems (AI/physics)

No doubt a resolution drop is useful and looking at the comments over the last few days its probably what developers are going to engage in more if gamers suggest they cant tell the difference. Got to wonder why BDs sell then if thats the case...

ps3ud0

Both of those could run on a 360 so why bother upgrading?

Way to miss the point completely, I was trying to say that if people are so bothered about graphics over gameplay then why do games like the ones mentioned sell so well?

I'm paying for a system that has more memory/faster CPU/GPU than the current gen machines I have.

Think of it like an investment, it will mature over time and give great benefits. We have no idea what games will look like on either platform in 4 years time.

So you may as well get it in 12 months when it will be cheaper and 'maturer'?

MS have dropped the ball big time - buying one at launch is just crazy.

I understand those people who are getting both consoles or must have the exclusive launch games, even though it seems a little short sighted to make a decision purely on a systems launch games.

I'm buying the console to play the games now, hence my decision is based on what will be available now. While we can all make educated guesses about the quality of games that will come out of Naughty Dog in the future, there is no way of knowing that MS won't buy up some hot new developer who ends up creating the best game of the next generation. That's why I always base my decisions around what I know for sure, rather than what I can guess will happen. I know I'm in a different situation to most though as I will have both consoles soon enough, so it boils down to launch games for me, rather than anything else.

Graphics do matter, this is what the next generation is all about. If consoles are lasting 6-7 years they need to be pushing the envelope as best they can.

I disagree, to a point. Graphics are important, but for me this next gen is more about what game worlds can be created with 8 core CPUs and 8GB of Ram. How will the Cloud (on either system) be used? Can they use it to give us persistent game worlds that play and evolve even when we're not there? What kind of gameplay advances will this new power give us?

With all the joking / **** taking aside (me guilty too)

I have no doubt that 2nd generation of games coming to XB1 will be running 1080P 30/60FPs. These are launch games, most cross gen and on a very tight time timescale. Engines will improve, become more refined and efficient and the hardware will be fully exploited especially that ESRAM which did wonders on both PS2 and the 360. And lets be clear, these games coming out and even COD are leaps and bounds improvement over last gen. Yoputube crappy compression doesn't make that clear but I guarantee when on your HDTV you will see the difference, in response to why don't you just stick to the 360 then.

At the same time PS4 stuff will also do the same as above, so we'll see the same res with more bells and whistles at a more stable frame rate. And it will always have that advantage over the XB1.

None of that though is more important than the games you enjoy to play, and shouldn't be the ONLY reason you choose one platform over the other. Surely it must be a balanced decision (no pun intended :)) with performance, games, eco system, controller, services and where you mates are.

If a few of those you feel are similar on both sides, for example the controllers are said to be similar then fair enough you could say ok multi-plats are going to be better on the PS4 so might as well go with PS4 next gen. Or no I prefer Live over PSN and exclusives like Halo, Gears, Titanfall then your choice is clear.

OMG how the hell are you going to even recognise a pixelated enemy at range at 720P, no thanks.

Yep, getting a free game at launch is mad. What lunatic would do that.

There is no certainty you will get it cheaper in 12 months.

I also enjoy the 'new console' feel and buzz, I didn't have it for the last gen as I was late to the party for both 360 and PS3.

£80 more for a system with a substantial difference in performance is too much. For those on the fence the decision is easy. Very disappointing from Microsoft, they could have easily competed.

Nintendo got slated for an under-powered 'next gen' console and so should MS. They should cut the price IMO.

I really don't get this viewpoint, about MS screwing up because they have a console with less power than its competitor. One console was always going to be more powerful than the other. MS had their vision of the future, did their research, and came up with a spec that fits in with that. Sony did the exact same thing. Sony's console came out as more powerful. I don't understand why MS should be slated for that.

Bloody hell, I didn't realise you had a sensible side! :p

I think their biggest problem is that they are the most expensive and not the most powerful, when usually the most expensive console ends up being more powerful, and that makes people feel like they are getting their moneys worth.

As others have said, if Xb1 was priced even just the same price as PS4 it would be a lot more appealing and people wouldn;t have as much of a problem with the power

As an aside, I think it's a real shame that this thread has descended into a power discussion again. With just over 3 weeks to launch, I'd much rather be discussing the games I want to play, or how I might want Kinect to evolve, or how I hope Xbox Snap will be used in the future. Instead we're still talking about the power of a system that hasn't even been released yet and is nowhere near mature enough to have any idea of just how much power it actually can produce.

Yes, and I totally understand that viewpoint. It is more expensive for less power, no doubt. As interested as I am in Kinect and what it could bring, if MS released a Kinect-less SKU for less price than a PS4 it would do absolute wonders for their sales figures.

There is a very good chance that as soon as they catchup with all the preorders and stock starts stocking up on shop shelves they will drop the price by £30-50 with no free game. The fact is, it is quite expensive and there is no getting round that fact at £430, even though it does include Kinect. New console buzz is overrated too with rushed out games.

It is hugely disappointing that they are not 1080p, even at 30fps. I played a bit of tomb raider at 720 and it just doesn't look as good on my 24" monitor like 1080 does, even though it was smoother gameplay. However the advantage of a console is I don't have to worry about this rubbish. Tweaking the settings on a PC is a boring task.

What's everyone's plans regarding sound? Especially if playing on a monitor?

Playing on a TV however I have bought a sound bar for a little extra umph until the 5.1 headsets are available next year.

Not playing on a monitor, but I'm tempted to get one of those Turtle Beach Surround headsets. I've never used a proper gaming headset before though so no idea if it'll be worth it.

I've got a older set of Turtle Beach 5.1 headphones (yes simulated 5.1) and I swear by them. Battlefield on War Tapes audio and the volume ramped up, you can't beat it. Also doesn't upset the neighbours :)
