Xbox Scorpio

i can see xbox S replacing old xbox one and scorpio being high end not a replacement console

every xbox one game will run on both console anyway, maybe just upscale to 4k on scorpio (make sense with 4k gaming)

will keep a low price console £300 and high end £500+ scorpio

seems to fit in with games on PC stuff

It's a bit of a shame that by the time the consoles are powerful enough to provide truly impressive 1080p experiences, 4K is the next big thing instead. Once again they'll be chasing resolution and framerate while the real game-changing stuff like improved AI, physics etc are left behind.

That's A really good point.

For example the witcher 3 reveal / demo video a couple of e3s ago looked breath taking with loads of effects combined. Then when it got released it still looked great but with a significant downgrade to the effects.

Whilst the new consoles will do 4K the image quality and pixel quality will remain similar and all extra power will go towards pixels.

I would certainly prefer 1080p with a **** tonne of effects, better AI, physics etc

It's quite funny at the moment watching some of the people who panned Xbox One for not being quite as powerful as the PS4 on release suddenly espousing how power and graphics aren't the only things which matter. ;) :D

At least 4K gaming will be round a helluva lot longer. I can't see anything above that coming for 20-odd years at least.

It's a pointless argument when this supposed more powerful console is not out till late 2017.

Why? If Scorpio is noticeably more powerful than Ps 4.5 then it has the potential to take market share in the same way that PS4 did from XBox One. If Sony step up and produce something just as powerful it's good for console gaming all round. Either way MS have set the benchmark for proper next gen console gaming. Add backward compat to XB1 and 360 as well as the initiative to buy once and have XBox and Windows 10 PC versions for the same game I'd say MS has gone a long way to try to win back its gaming customers.

True 4K @ 60fps AND maintaining high levels of detail and AA??? Don't make me laugh, even high end PCs struggle to maintain that on some new games. Not to mention the texture pop in some games suffer from.

Upscaled to 4K more like and lots of graphics jiggery pokery to give a 'faux' 4K image. See it all the time with the current gen, so many games are not true native 1080, most are 900 and upscaled with dynamic AA blah blah blah

Interesting how M$ and potentially Sony will now divide the market between standard 1080 peasant console and 4K posh console.

UHD & 60FPS with a something around 980 and almost a 980Ti in terms of performance. It must be either:
Optimised very well
General IQ and gubbins are turned down
or
Upscaled

We'll see soon in a year or so.

Also, do wish people would stop saying "true 4K" as frankly that means 4096 x 2160, which I doubt it will be. If you mean rendered in UHD, then say rendered in UHD.

Ah finally someone said it.. Yes its UHD meaing 3840x2160 not 4096x2160 and even then, its going to have to be very well optimised going on specs released.

it would still mean 1080p should hit solid 60fps though.

Never mind, my fanboism got the better of me, for the record I'm pleased with these xbox announcements and I think I will get the xbox slim, undecided on the Scorpio and neo until I see more solid details.

It could be achievable given release is 18 months away so "big" Pascal could be an option or perhaps even something exclusive with "Volta". The equivalent of a 1080ti (for example) with highly optimised CPU/Memory/bus could make proper 4K gaming possible on either console platform. Now if it can hit a sensible price point is another thing entirely.

It'll be interesting to see if people prefer 4K native resolution for games or using the power to enable 1080p with all the effects , detail and draw distance turned up to "11". I tend to think bare resolution is a poor indicator of play experience in the real world unless you obsess on "my thing has more teraflops than yours" peeing contests.

This console is a proper upgrade, a massive step up from Xbox One, which has just over 1TFLOPs, Scorpio coming in at 6TFLOPS with all that memory bandwidth. It is going to be a really nice upgrade.

I will skip the slim and hold out for one of these beautys.

We have no idea what NEO is going to be , we only have leaked information, even Andrew House said the NEO does exist but said nothing else.

The CPU in the X1 was more powerful then the PS4 and everyone was going on about how much better CPU was etc with its core management, now all of a sudden everyone that loves xbox are going on about how great GPU is. Both sides of the fence, and fanboys will always play up the strengths of their beloved systems.

Either way, the NEO and Scorpio exists as both parties have realised that neither of the current gen consoles are really powerful enough after only three years.

Sony needs the extra power for better looking VR titles and MS are looking to have a more powerful system as the current X1 has had some parity issues.

But, hey consumers win, as we get console VR games from Sony if you want the VR thing in your living room, and if you have a 4K tv you can get in the near future a 4K console that plays 4K video content , and in 2017 a UHD or maybe even a true 4K games machine, and even the NEO could do UHD, so everyone wins...

Do you even need anti-aliasing at 4K resolution? With that many pixels, jaggies won't be that noticeable will they?

well , its something that many debate, but even when you are sitting a good few feet away then you could get away with less AA maybe?

But depends on screen size, game, style of game, how far you sit from the TV etc... Lots of factors.

I think a well rounded system will be important rather than just pure GPU grunt and i'll be interested to read what conclusions people draw form the statements around memory bandwidth and "8 core CPU" (which frankly could mean anything). If MS manage to pull off a console the equal or more powerful than Neo and then add shared gaming with PCs (including buy once play on either PC or XBox), 4k video and common VR hardware across both platforms they will have come up with a pretty decent offering after having been on the back foot for a generation.

Both platforms will always have their die hard fanboys but it's hard to see Sony not reacting to todays announcement by stepping up to something in the same ball park at the very least. PS4 vs XB1 showed just how quickly gamers can be lured to a platform perceived to be more powerful. Either way good healthy competition can only be to the advantage of gamers, this generation of consoles really didn't deserve the title "next gen" with both of them barely able to do 1080p at a decent refresh rate with high detail levels consistently.

Hopefully todays gauntlet being thrown down will help to make sure we see a real next gen step forward with the up coming consoles from all camps.

I'd agree with that.

Be interesting to see what happens over the next 18 months. A lot can happen in that time.

Holy **** they did it.......

That changes things quite a lot, I wonder how Sony respond to that.

4K gaming at 60FPS....VR as well.

8 Cores
6 TFlops
320GB/s memory bandwidth
4K/VR Gaming
BC and forward compatible
2017

Love the specs on that. Hopefully they can deliver on this!!!
