But with the games which had deeper tweaks for One X, Series S is supposed to be missing out on these improvements. I referenced The Witcher 2 as an example a few pages back. Series S owners get the 360 version with automatic enhancements. Series X owners get the vastly improved One X version.

Yeah, I read your post about The Witcher 2 and I thought "what the heck are they on about?" as I can't remember any 360 games getting anything beyond the 3x resolution increase. I'll have to go check out Digital Foundry's spiel on it.

The 1280x672 resolution of the Xbox 360 game scales up by 9x, handing in a 3840x2016 total, vertically stretched to full 4K (and making everything look a touch taller and thinner than the PC original). Again, the back-compat team play with render targets and level of detail settings - higher resolution textures and shadow maps are presented in most scenes and even geometry LODs seem to be pushed out and improved for a richer scene.

So it does appear there's more to it.

So from Google searching in my case it's not Xboxes fault. Activision have released two versions of the new Cod and aren't using smart delivery. My game says Xbox One / Xbox Series X on front, so it's the Xbox One version, it needs to say Xbox Series X first :(

And have the Optimized for Series X logo in the top right corner.

How is it possible for a game to cause hardware faults? I thought the OS was supposed to be guardian of all such things with its protected memory, sandbox this, that and the other. I don't think my Windows 10 PC has locked up ever in the 2.5 years of ownership and yet you'd think that would be a more likely scenario than the Xbox.

The only real negative Richard has is the SSD space. He points out that you are bound to run out sooner rather than later and the expensive cart is the price difference between S and X. It's a shame because if the Series S came with the same 1TB SSD, it would be just perfect.

If you are only using it as a game pass console though, a handful of games at a time then delete them, it's not really an issue. It's only if you keep multiple service games like Call of Duty at 100GB+ that you're going to have problems.

You can use any external USB drive, some of the enhanced games won't run from it but users have found many do. All the older games will run from it no problem and if your son likes to play a few titles at the same time then he will probably need it as the S runs out of space pretty quick.

It seems any game that is still being built with the old Xbox Development Kit (XDK) will run from external drives even if it has the Optimized for X|S flag. There's a way to find out by getting up some info bar on each game but I can't remember how to do it on the top of my head.

Mentioned it before but I think they have a lot of consoles sitting in the warehouses etc and are drip feeding them to keep demand high.

I assumed that mine was built recently as it was delivered to me on Tuesday this week. but as I said it was built back in august of this year.

I can't see that at this time of year. All the stock would go because it's Christmas. I wonder if maybe it's that some have been air freighted and some on boats. All manufactured at the same time but some take longer to get here.

I could potentially get one for my daughter but I know a) she would always want to use the x and b) she would get bullied at school because she didn't have an x. Best for me at least is to try and secure an X which she can use and then get a second x next year when they have their inevitable price drop.

Flippin 'eck. Do you have to get her an iPhone 12 Max Pro as well?

Seems like Very have some of the S in stock.

A part of me wants to get it because it's available and the other part of me wants to hold off for an X :p

You're exactly the same as me. Every time I see the S come in to stock on Microsoft Store, I add it to my basket and then sit and wait with my brain tearing itself apart weighing up whether to proceed with checkout or wait for the X. I think the X is due in next week...
