You're not supposed to be comparing 6Tflops GCN and 4Tflops RDNA 2. They are not the same thing. All this Tflops stuff is just marketing nonsense.

It is.

4 tflops is really poor to be honest. I can see framerates really getting bad by mid - end of the console cycle.

I thought this would at least be the same or a bit better than the One X.

Incorrect. You can’t compare performance across GPU generations using teraflops. They’re just not comparable.

Watch the digital foundry videos on this topic. The Series S has the same GPU power as the One X.

As my post above. You are comparing 4TF of RDNA2 to 6TF of RDNA. So, again, I’m quite confident that as a baseline this will be better than the one-x. Not happy? But a series-x.

It needs to be able to keep up with games through this whole generation. I think starting with only 4tflops of gpu power is pretty weak.

That doesn't make any difference. The Series X has to keep up with games through the whole generation as well. It just has extra power to render at 4K. There are unlikely to be scenarios with the X running at 1080p30 and the S a total bust. Unlikely but not impossible.

Ok, but do we have any info on whether RDNA2 is 50% more powerful per teraflop like you are implying?

So if AMD release an RDNA2 GPU that has ~6tflops of power, it will actually be as fast if not faster than the 5700xt?

Yeah. You’re forgetting DRS....all of these neat features that automatically scale to power available.

Go watch some digital foundry videos on the topic.

Yes i realise there will be some efficiency improvements, but there would have to be a lot for it to be more powerful than the ONE X

I guess it is just disappointing that it is likely the new gen S console will only be around the same performance as the last gen X in GPU performance.

Would have been good if they could have given it a bit more GPU power for longevity's sake.

Price is decent enough though, and i'm pleased it will still come with an NVME drive.

Have you watched the video? :p

That makes a lot more sense.
I just hope that the series S doesn't hold back the graphical jump of next gen.

This is my worry. or that the framerates get pretty bad on the series S after a few years and more graphically demanding games come out.

Yes! :p

I'm just skeptical how big a jump RDNA 2 will have in teraflop/relative to game performance from RDNA. We will just have to see I guess. I understand that the Series S will still likely be as powerful as the ONE X in game performance, I was just hoping it would have a bit more grunt in the tflop stakes (ie at least equal to the ONE X) to make it a decent bit more powerful than the last gen console.

In terms of GPU performance, it isn't clear whether it will be much, if at all more powerful than last gens X in basic rendering power.

Well, either way - it’s an option. Seems good to me. But yeah, as long as you’re informed about it before buying.

My thoughts are the Series S will be targeted to those still on an OG One, or a One S, in which case it's a nice bump in performance with a few bells and whistles like SSD etc. That should feel like a huge difference coming from an OG One.

One X upgrade path this gen is the Series X, because you want the best :)

I wouldn't move from a One X to a Series S personally, nice price as it is.
