XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Yeah don't like the look of that small squad size, I always used to enjoy taking a big squad as you could be a lot more tactical in terms of things like crossfires, fire support and so on.

i got the originals in the steam sale and have been loving every minute!

Nothing like blowing a hole in the side of a UFO with the guided cruise missile thing then spending a few turns just launching missiles inside it and listening to the death rattles of aliens, then going in and just witnessing the wasteland :D

Bring it on! I bet they manage to muck it up somehow though with "extra features" that they think we couldnt live without.

Just a line by line rewrite with new gfx will be fine k thx ta.

I prefered waiting around till they got an alien base and "farming" the supply ships when they landed (guarenteed 200 elerium per ground mission). Sticking a blaster bomb into the outer skin of the ship just infront of the door to the command centre (top floor) followed by a hail of stun bombs through the hole meant even if it was sectoid I had the motherless sectoid commander dude either dead or stunned for the rest of my team to swarm in all decks at once (flying suits of course ;) ) and mop up.

The wiki has some awesome tricks for "levelling up" your guys (mind control muton, give it a laser pistol, box it in a room with all your folks with basic pistols on reaction fire, in at least personal armour and enjoy the shootout for a few turns :D. Powersuits even better - immune to laser fire from the front.)

Currently in the midst of another run through and the addiction is still strong :D

Had a rather good start though so I can see it being a *fairly* quick one. Just need to get PSI-OPS running (hyperwave decoders under construction on all bases so i'll find a suitable sectoid or ethereal soon). Have avenger, heavy plasma's, blaster launchers and all dudes in fly suits tho :D

Even recovered from an early whitewash, one guy left covering 2 doors of the large terror ship (popping out from behind a house and back each turn - he's ended up promoted to commander) while the 2 other survivors went on a big flanking move.

If you can get over the old graphics and a few bugs it's SUCH a good game. Grab it on steam and check this post:clicky for getting UFO extender working. The first basic (and useful) change is stun is always an option from melee range - stun rods not required. The basic base layout is more defendable too if/when you get attacked (hangars at the top with only the access lift linking to the rest of the base thus making a natural bottleneck). There's a few other minor tweaks and quality of life improvements and it fixes all the problems with getting it perfectly set up under dosbox.

I found the instructions caused the link in steam to stop working but it runs fine if you start the executable by hand.

I am worried about the small squad and also what they done about AP's but I will reserve my judgement until they release it, I just hope it has the same feel then I might forgive some of the changes.

I do think maps will be a lot smaller and that why we got smaller squads, but I will wait and see how it plays.

I am just glad they are trying to remake it, as long they don't butcher it to much.

edit- I got it pined just had a quick go and got my ass kicked bad

From a video I watched on their site they say that they have been removed but instead now each turn you get a bunch of options of what each squad member can do so they are still there just done differently.

Stoner81.

Terrific memories come flooding back of this terrific game.
I was 35 when I first played this, I’m 52 now, looks like I’ll be 53 and playing it again, don’t get much better than that..:D
