XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

For those who have now played the game - how do you think the game experience compares to the demo? I loved the original XCOM and played it to death on my Amiga - but I wasn't keen on the demo when I played it - the maps were very small and confined, there seemed to be no inventory or "load-out" before the missions and the overall feeling was that it was a 'simplified' version of the old game.

However, I know that it's difficult to get a real feel for a game like this from such a short demo - so, I thought I'd seek the views of the fine people on this forum...

Thanks in advance... :)

Its a great game and worth playing but feature wise its not as good as the original or even many of the originals clones that appeared because you cant even do simple things like,if your carrying a medpack and you die,you cant use another soldier to pick it up,theres lots of essential bits missing feature wise.

I mean some people have finshed it already, wouldnt complete the original that quick even on the easiest setting.

Its still good, coulda been much much better.

No doubt Firaxis could have made a game you and I would enjoy more, as XCom fans.

The reality is that if Julian and Nick were making this today, and MicroProse was still around, what we'd end up with would be more like Firaxis' version than the original.

It's a product of our times. Even strategy games have to be streamlined, accessible and short.

You can only get away with being different if you are an indie developer. Firaxis can't even make another game like Alpha Centauri, even if they wanted to. A modern A.C. would be streamlined, accessible, and less complicated.

Am I the only one finding classic insanely hard - don't seem to have enough money todo anything :(

Hi Tals, I would strongly recommend that one of the first things you do is build another satellite, definitely have it built and deployed prior to the months end.

It takes 20 days to build, costs $100 on classic (not sure if different on any other difficulties, only played on classic) and if you deploy it to the USA you will get an additional $180, (Russia $150) at months end, take your pick.

I would then strongly advice getting an additional sattelite building installed next to the first one, this will allow to you get 5 sattelites in total.

Pump them out asap and you will have a much easier time financially. Thats what I did at least when I finished the game. :)

damn just sunk another 6 hours into this

those ruddy beserkers are crazy mofos
just had one take 2 plasma blasts at point blank range and still kill my major :(

Played the original to death back in the day so tried the demo last night was ok, so might take the plung apart from I couldn't get it working in Nvidia Surround it rendered the game upsidedown, quick google search found a few others with this problem but didn't really look hard for a fix.

Does the surround work in the full version?

Did you get an answer to this I'm in the same boat?

After a repeated bouts of wtf pwnage in the first mission or two, I finally got a Classic Ironman campaign under way. :D April is almost over and my rocket happy heavy, Major Vasquez has 29 kills in 10 missions, the rest are lagging a bit behind and the bodybags are starting to fill up.

The tactical combat really keeps you wanting to do one more mission, but I get the feeling my campaign is nearing a point where I need to be paying attention, so I'll start up again tomorrow. My major niggle at the moment is the inability to chose your soldiers nationality. I've had no British soldiers recruited in any of my sessions today, which means, I have unable to create myself. :( Then again that's probably saved me from the attentions of the Chrysalids.

One suspects that first terror mission is where a lot of campaigns go belly up.

waste of time,

I had a Scottish sniper who I ran through 10 missions without issue

as soon as he took my name he died horribly first time out, being turned into a zombie eating killing a colleague before eating rockety death

Yes I was disappointed by this too, I seem to remember some screenshots of the customisation prior to release and it had a "country" option, but next to it was "not implemented".

***EDIT*** found it:

I wonder why they didn't implement it? Looks like they were thinking about it?

But as others have said, guarantee that as soon as you name one of them as yourself, a chrysallid or worse will chew your face off, lol!

I've stopped naming my troops now until they reach Sergeant, used up too many good names!

Was floating along feeling quite happy with myself, no casualties then boom Terror Attack., Got my rear end handed to me, bugged out with one of my 5 left. As if the one hit kill spider things weren't bad enough the crit hitting zombies were the final straw. Made me ragequit :)

I'm finding it rather easy on normal, not a single loss yet.

I like the development and nicknames your troops get, makes you more interested in their ongoing well-being.

One thing I'm surprised hasn't annoyed me (which I though would) is the smaller squad sized - six appears to be ok for now.

... but why can't we pick stuff off dead bodies damnit!

Good calls, rerolled, starting in Africa and working on the Satellites, financially I am in a better place :)

Finally got this yesterday. Sat on the couch last night playing it on my laptop till 1.30am this morning!. I'm hooked, it's a superb game, brought memories of the original right back to me. Couple of things as a n00b I'm confuzzled about, I'll post a few questions shortly for you experts to answer!.

Runs sweet on my XPS M1530 too!!

OMG!

First mission of the day, upgraded with lasers an stuff and got a complete ass kicking. My A-Team, they're all gone. :( For good measure, I even lost an interceptor that same day. That's game over man, game over...

Think I may have to focus a bit more on armour next time around... Or find a way to stop them shooting through walls. :D
