Your country needs YOU!

Oh, what's that on the floor. It's yer flute. :p Typical brain dead numpties defending their oppressor.

Perhaps you lot can be on the front line wearing your Union Jack boxer shorts.

I'm sure the enemy will be terrified.

Never trust a Unionist...

Good luck with independence :)

I thought the point of our grandfathers fighting in wars was to avoid the need for future generations to do the same?

Regardless, I've no issue if it comes to defending the country, however if its for the latest "let's go defend X resource" then yes, I think many people will take issue with that.

The military absolutely needs funding, its an insurance policy, you hope you don't need it but you 100% want it ready and waiting. That being said with the current politicians I wouldn't be fighting for them. Well not unless they're drafted first.

The issue is a supply chain is longer than it was then. Even in the old days we'd have some oversees war that would be a suppression of the local population to maintain security of supply.

Problem is - Poots&Xi are going todo whatever they're going todo. That can be direct or indirect subversion of control of those supply chains and resources. After all resources are lost, it's only a matter of time before control is taken from the populous. That, unfortunately, is the issue.

Presumably, this is an attempt to shift the needle in public discourse on the military. There was a bit of an uptick in support of the armed forces in the immediate aftermath of the Russian invasion of Ukraine but since then it's back to ''more money for the NHS/Education etc''. Not unworthy causes to be sure but the peace dividend that Europe and ourselves have had for the last 30 years has put us into this situation where we are not a credible force. I understand that as part of the 2010 spending review, the cost of the nuclear deterrent was moved from the treasury to the MOD budget which is effectively a cut in of itself even before you get to austerity cuts ontop of that.

Politicians will largely follow public opinion, if the voters don't care it won't get any attention. Imo if the public won't support increased military spending (and therefore cuts to other areas/increased borrowing/increased taxes) then we should get rid of the nuclear deterrent and spend that cash on conventional forces. What we have been doing for the last 30 years cannot continue.

“There are currently 30 Tranche 1 aircraft on the military register of which 26 will leave service by the end of March 2025.”

Where is the order for a 1:1 replacement? The 6th gen GCAP/Tempest is over a decade away, and the F35 acquisition is slow due to us not wanting to pay to upgrade older planes to the block 4 standard that is due in 2029. Lets just hope nothing kicks off between now and then!

I thought one of the issues was that the Typhoon couldn't be made to work on the carriers we have. Thus the move to F35. The carriers currently have a complement of 8 F35 with 24 being war time compliment and a max of 30. It makes sense not to have a large complement on a ship (easy opening target).

No thank you, I would rather go to Prison.

**** fighting for this government and the people who have continuously demonized my generation and then have the nerve to think we should go and fight.

One of the biggest problems the military has is that its recruitment is now done by Crapita(Capita). It takes so long people often give up before waiting getting an answer back and move onto other things. I've read about this multiple times now.

Outsourcing our countries military recruitment lol.

Agree with @Feek , some terrible attitudes on here. "Not worth fighting for". I can't help but feel that these are the terminally online people who sit and wallow in political misery articles every day, always moaning about how someone or something is the cause of what are really self-inflicted problems.

Still can if determined enough, same with anywhere else in the world. Don't have to be limited to Europe
Sadly, I'm not in the smart-enough camp that I'm a highly skilled or sought after worker. Other than leaving my fiancée to get citizenship through marriage, I'm not sure what else I can really do.

Europe is the only place I'd consider moving to. Not sure where else you'd suggest? USA is a cess-pit, Canada is USA-lite...

But putting the shoe on the other foot. It's a lot easier to be all for conscription when you've admitted you're probably too old to get selected. Everyone has an opinion when it's from the free-seats.

While the country may be worth fighting for the politicians, who are the ones waging the war, certainly aren't worth dying for.

Yeah this is pretty sad saying "not worth fighting for"
Sad as in its really bad that that's how crap the UK has become over the years.
There's very little patriotism it's been eroded since I can remember at least....
I'd be useless in any army but I guess I'd do any support role possible

You don't fight for the politicians in the scenario outlined in the OP.

It's very hypothetical, of course, but it's very different from invading Iraq, etc.

Can't move to Europe thanks to Brexit.

Course you can Malcolm. Get a specialism, qualified, be in demand. Yes a beach job running a bar in Ibiza should really go to a local person but for anything worthwhile get the language and go get it rather than sitting on your backside and moaning, poor me.

On the other hand with that attitude, I can see why you may not be required.

If my options are die or die fighting then of course fighting is the only option unless you'd rather wait for the inevitable.

But if there was conscription and it meant going to a foreign land? Show me the cell.

There seems to be plenty of young lads running around stabbing each other these days, is teaching them how to shoot too a good idea?

So why are you living there?

Imagine if this attitude applied to everything in life, just walk away from any problem without owning it and trying to deal with it...... Granted I now spend the majority of my time outside of the UK due to work, but my home and residence is still the UK, even with the state the country is currently in and the totally rudderless and inept government of the past decade or so, I wouldn't just up-sticks and permanently move away from it if I didn't hold a belief that hopefully further down the line things could be somewhat fixed and lessons could be learned..... But heyho, whatever works for you buttercup.
