Your country needs YOU!

Thread is brilliant:

"I'm not fighting for this country; it's full of woke ****s", all the way to "I'm not fighting for this country; it's full of flag-shagger gammons"…

But one way or another, no one wants to fight for their family, their friends, their home, or their liberty.

We're all ******.

Personally, if it came to it, I would volunteer for something, although I doubt I'd be much use on the front lines.

Why do you assume everyone has a family or a home?

Marriage is at an all time low among young people and generation rent is a thing. Breaking down the concept of home ownership, marriage and raising a family has severe consequences. These things have been the pillars of our society for thousands of years and we're now heading deeply into uncharted territory.

Add to that the rampant misandry and free flow of information. Men just know better these days including myself. I just want to prioritize myself and have a good time and you cannot shame me into doing otherwise.

"Family" isn't just a wife and 2.4 kids. It's parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, cousins. I get that some people have **** families, but then some people would class their best friends as extended family. If you have literally nobody in your life who you're that close to, I feel very sorry for you.

And "home" doesn't have to be a building you own outright or via a mortgage. It can be a village, a town, a city or a country. Again, if you don't feel any connection or care about even one place, that's pretty sad (in the "unhappy" sense of the word, I don't mean "inadequate").

It's ironic that you bemoan the breakdown of the "pillars of our society", but all you want to do is prioritise yourself and "have a good time". Good luck doing that if the country was being invaded.

The boomer generation have certainly "got theirs" and are the largest cohort in the country right now so will be able to protect it at all costs. There's a very interesting lecture at the RI (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZuXzvjBYW8A) about this phenomenon. It's an hour long but worth the watch.

A generation born in the years following the war are much, much more patriotic, and much more likely to look down their noses at younger people who don't have the same patriotism. A generation who will happily miss the irony of saying we should defend the country while hoarding everything we should be fighting for. A generation happy to push the younger generations to conscription knowing they can stay in their large, cosy homes likely worth 10x what they easily bought it for a few decades ago.

IMO things are more likely to come to a head after a war than before one.

"Dear Milenials and Zoomers. Thanks for dying for your country. Now could you get back to work - you have pensions, health & social care and now an expensive war to pay for you know! And there's half a million less of you to pay for it. Chop chop!

P.S. While you were away, we had to take drastic measures to prop up house prices. So... we bought them all.

Signed,

Boomers"

Without major societal reform and a redistribution of weath, a postwar United Kingdom is headed straight for civil unrest. Only it won't be "soft" avocado-toast munching Milenials and TikTok obsessed Zoomers rioting. It'll be veterans of a major conflict.

It's easy to make light of this headline but the freedoms we sit here & enjoy in the UK were hard won.
So many people saying the last few days that they are unwilling to fight for them for xyz pathetic reasons means it's basically inevitable we will eventually lose them. Pretty sad to think about really :/

Yup if the **** hits the fan you are not fighting for this government, you are fighting for your children, brothers and sisters, parents.

What happens if you don't fight, and then some foreign soldiers come and start killing your children? Might feel a bit guilty then.

What was that town in France in the second world war, mate was telling me, they rounded up all the women and children into a church and set it alight.

That is why you fight.

Don't get me wrong, the thought scares the absolute **** out of me, and honestly I can't see anything happening soon anyway, but I have a 5 year old son who can't fight for himself so someone has to.

Oradour-sur-Glane

There is a bit about it at the start of The World at War, grim stuff.

Send the Boomers in first - they're definitely the lowest value long-term asset for the country.

An eye opener of a thread. A sad read actually. :(
I agree, patience for the UK and what it now has become is difficult to take pride in and feel patriotic. However, as bad as it is, I'd still fight for it for future generations.

What actually are the current requirements for joining the armed forces? Age? Physical exams? Do you have to pass any form of mental aptitude test?

My family is scattered all over the world. I have plenty of people in my life and the British side of my family have immigrated to a sunnier place. Depending on who is invading I would evaluate my options but volunteering for the meat grinder would be out of the question!

We're talking about completely fantastical scenarios here so why are we just talking about Russia? Russia is pathetic and they don't even have the population to do a European invasion even if their military technology was on par they simply don't have the numbers. There are other far more powerful nations and some are only just becoming powerful but have insane potential.

It's really rich British people talking about war and WW2, UK a historically aggressive European nation with the least amount of WW2 casualties per population that was not invaded. Not everybody gets raped or murdered in war. My grandads village was visited by the Nazis and innocent people were not raped or murdered and we're talking about the Nazis here.

fighting for liberty is fine, fighting for red faced gammon politicians who are just working out the best way to line their pcokets and those of their donors can go and **** itself on **** stained **** stick

the way the current politicians are talking, you just need a pulse and not enough braincells to work out you are cannon fodder for one of their haio brained line our pockets schemes.

Joining the armed forces should be a vocation not a forced enterprise. Forced conscription just yields poor soldiers. Also if you were a professional soldier would you want someone who doesn't weant to be there watching your back when you get dropped into the action ? If people aren't feeling pride about their country and want to protect it the government should probably start asking themselves that question first.

Indeed. I mean if in this fantastical situation that will never happen were to occur, I may be convinced to defend "my land" or be a lookout or whatever to protect my family - but I'm not willing to be deployed to a theatre fighting a war I don't believe in. That said, I would also seek ways to get out of here - let's not pretend 100,000s of people wouldn't want to do the same thing, it'll be entirely feasible to do. Dangerous? Yes. But I'd rather take that risk than be canon fodder.

and easily eroded over the last few decades.

Those with the easiest lives should be first on the front lines because they are the ones who got to enjoy peacetime.

The rest are the forgotten underclass who can't even rely on public transport or basic medical needs to be met, then expected to be thrown at the enemy as cannon fodder.

a true disposable society.

as we saw in Ukraine anyone who was able got out before the borders were closed and people forced into military service.

The exact same thing would happen here if we were ever at risk
