Your current Fish tank Setups!

Guys, I have a question. Just upgraded to a 140ltr tank, and restocked. I have been keeping zebra danios and cherry barbs to gether, and just introduced 2 dwarf gourami and a few amano shrimp (I did have a couple of other random fish and shrimp but the wood I put in killed them off as I didn't soak out the tannins well enough). However, after what has seemed to be a peaceful couple of weeks, we have lost 2 danios and possibly a shrimp. I've been keeping on top of the water changes and filter cleans and the parameters of the water itself seems fine. This leads me to suspect a fish, but which would be the likely culprit?

It wouldn't have been the tannins as they are actually beneficial and very natrual, they just make the water tea coloured which is why people don't like it. They may have been something on the wood (like a chemical) but it is unlikely, when those sorts of things happen it tends to kill the whole tank rather than just a couple of fish and it sounds like you pre-soaked the wood so that is unlikely.

I can see a few reasons:
a) Fish do just die for no reason.
b) Seeing as it's a new setup there could have been some sort of ammonia/nitrite spike that sorted itself out before you tested again.
c) Dwarf Gourami can be pretty aggressive but its normally to each other and I doubt they could catch a Zebra Danio or Cherry Barb.
d) The new fish bought some disease in with them which took out a couple of fish. Normally you would have seen symptoms for the most common stuff.

In reality it could have been all of or none of the above.

Whatever it was with the wood it took out a few fish and all of my shrimp. Also, the fish only seem to disappear at night. I have a lot of assassin snails and the shrimp, so I don't find much of anything left of any fish, so its a bit strange.

Hopefully I'll not lode any more, but will keep an eye out for any symptoms.

Cheers for the reply btw!

My system has finally gone stable (ish) on my reef tank except phosphates which are a battle which is raging on but im cutting back on my removal methods and it isnt creeping in as badly.
Adding a correct wavemaker actually seemed to help a lot on winning this war. I went from 2 jabao sw4s to one Vortech mp10 and the difference is unreal. I don't get build up of junk in my tank now, my skimmers producing much thicker junk and its very dark right now best iv ever seen it working. And the algae on sand has receeded possibly again due to flow

My current battle in my anemone hes not sure were he wants to sit with a new wavemaker

Make sure you put the foam cover on the mp10 whilst its moving about. Ive lost
Many nem “babys” to my mp10s but my tanks big enough to cope and i call it natural selection.

A big nem going thru a p/h could be enough to nuke a tank

It is on :) I don't trust him enough not to have it on anyhow

Argh, just when everything was nice and stable...

Water went cloudy over the last week and all my softies have really shrunk, my candy canes have gone really gaunt and the flesh is stripping off my plating montipora, my water is all fine*:

1.027 sg
9dkh
8.0 ph
450 calc
1500* mg
Phos and nitrates 0

I'm guessing the mg is the issue, I dosed it last week as it was a little low, but only enough to increase it by ~15ppm.

Other than water changes, is it just a case of crossing my fingers and waiting?

Have you tested for ammonia and nitrite? Something may have died.

Magnesium seems very high, it should be between 1250 - 1350.

Measured again after the water change and its around 1300 now, think i might need a different test kit though as I seem to be getting inconsistent results with this one :/

Ammonia and nitrites both 0

Anyone have any ideas what other decent filter media I can add to existing marine tank? I currently use filter sponge and filter floss pad's. Would adding seachem purigen and chemi pure blue be ok? Thanks

No need to add purigen with chemi pure blue as its already got it in, just be carefull with chemi blue or purigen on its own if you have sps corals as it can strip the, rowa phos and a decent carbon in a reactor if you have room.

Thanks it's ok as it's a fish only tank for now. Would it be ok if I have like purigen in another chamber and my existing mechanical filtration that is next to it?? Thanks

Yeah just get some flow through the bag really does polish the water and takes out the yellow tint.

Does any1 have any experience with rose bubble tip anemone, I will be collecting two small ones in two days. Cheers

Yeah i have 3/4 in my tank. They were doing fantastic up untill i moved house but they are still sulking a month later.

They are very fickle for want of a better word. And sulk if everything isnt perfect for them, also prone to taking a trip thru your powerheads

Wow that is nice mate, is there any need for dosage for alkalinity, calcium magnesium and all that?
And do you know if it can tolerate nitrates as that is my only fear, it is around 20ppm.

Cheers
