Your current Fish tank Setups!

Not really. The flame angel is the bullly in my tank.

The azures chase eachother now and then as thry all have thier own spot they hang out in but not what i would call agressive.

Gonna be looking to remove them soon anway to add some more colourfull fish namley a melanarus wrass and a replacement dracula goby now i have the lid.

That'll be fun trying to catch all of them. I had some once, I cant remember what type right now. But they were little gits, forever picking on each other and evreything else. Never again. They're on the no list with the green chromis, which were almost as bad.

The Flame Angel's colours really stand out with that light.

Yeah hes a beautiful fish. I have a jeuvanile coral beauty angel aswell that you can just see going between the rocks.

Hes also a stunner along with the royal gamma.

Luckily they all survived the move and the month they spent in temporary tanks so didnt have to replace them all.

Plan to remove the damsels is to drain the tank down till they chose a corner And then get the
Out wiht a big net. Most of corals are on the bottom only a couple of nems have chosen to sit ontop of the rocks but Im sure they will survive in the air for a bit.

Just wish i thought about this when i moved the tank as i stupidly put them back in there.

Not sure I've asked this but are guppies okay with betta fish?

The general guideline is don't combine male Betta splendens with any colourful fish, especially in smaller tanks, there are good odds the colourful fish will be killed because the Betta will treat them as other male Bettas in their territory.

you can get some colourful male endlers that can work though. i have some and hoping the betta i get will get along with them. No guarantees with a betta how ever. Its Its not so much the colours that bettas are aggressive to but the long flowing fins which guppies have.

So I've done some more testing, nitrate and nitrite are both zero but I'm getting an ammonia reading of 0.50ppm. I'm assuming that's down to having such a new tank?

Yes but you'll need to keep an eye on this, it means Seachem stability isn't keeping up with the waste production of your fish. Make sure you are going really light on the food for the first couple of weeks. A betta doesn't need much at all the size of its eye is a good reference for how much food it needs per day which is a couple of small pellets.

Keep testing, I would do a water change now but certainly if it gets any higher then change at least 50% of the water and increase the dose of Stability. If your ammonia is at 0.5ppm, a 50% water change will reduce it to 0.25.

You can dose prime at higher level to detoxify ammonia and nitrite but it doesn't get rid of it (the label has instructions).

My reeftops lid turned up today.

Unfortunatly it doesnt quite fit and im talking to the guy who makes it about what to do but its a vast improvment on loosing fish for now @Spook187 may need your assistance with contact if you dont mind

Is the rim slightly large at the back i can see, mine was a bit tight, what about a sanding it down cant be more than a mill or 2.

@b0rn2sk8 I've only got the betta atm, plus 3 moss balls a nice size chunk of bog wood and an ornament, sunken temple thingy. I'll check the ammonia level daily and if it goes up I'll do 25% water change and check again the next day once its had chance to settle. I'm hoping the fluval filter isn't just rubbish.

Get yourself one of these instead of wasting time with the ammonia testing

Seachem Ammonia Alert for Freshwater https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B000255R5G/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_VDKpCbSJZTG4K

I leave one of these in permenantly, they dont run out and are a great “warning somethings weong” at a glance thing

The filter isn't what takes out the ammonia, it just facilitates it. The filter under takes 3 jobs:
1) Provide water flow in the aquarium
2) catch debris in the water column (fish poop)
3) provides a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow

#1 and 3 are the most important, #2 really isn't. The Seachem stability is full of beneficial bacteria which should seed your tank to quickly get sufficient beneficial bacteria to sustain life.

I would suggest having a quick read up on the aquarium nitrogen cycle, you are essentially doing a 'fish in cycle' but the bottled bacteria product should largely negate the side effects but you should be considering it in that way.

Also don't be afraid to change more water than 25%, 50% is only one more bucket and will take 2 mins longer and the fish will normally appreciate plenty of fresh water.

Thanks for that I've watched some really good videos on it that make sense. I'm going to skip feeding for a few days and do a few 25% water changes only because standing for too long is murder.

The ammonia levels etc haven't changed yet so taking that as a positive.

Though its probably not the right time we ended up getting some cherry shrimp, 2 zebra snails and 3 albino corys.

Your right it probably wasn't the best time to add new fish. Shrimp are particularly sensitive to ammonia and nitrite so do take great care with feedings. Make sure you dose stability, you can dose more and its not really something you can overdose. Personally I would double what it says on the bottle as you have low amounts of ammonia present and new fish.

Yeah I've already started double dosing, only got them as we went in for plants explained to the guy and he said it would be fine.

The new additions are happy exploring, we have a stow away though, it appears a baby guppy came a long, as thats where they kept the shrimp. Can't catch the little beggar though, he's almost impossible to see, a few millimetres long and moves like lightning. Am going cross eyed trying to find him again.
The corys are loving the sand.

Came home to find the tranquility of my tank was shattered this evening. I have/had 6 male endler livebearers. The largest one which ive had for over 7 months was killed by one of his sons

They shreaded his fins and he was struggling to swim and has now passed. One of the smaller males also has fin damage so i have isolated him. I can see my nice colourful fast growing male following it on the other side of the isolation box flaring at it.

Seems like hes the alpha now and went on a bit of a murder spree. Didnt expect it tbh as all 6 of the males and left over fry commonly school together a bit and havent shown aggression towards each other before.

Time to wait and see what happens next. Hopefully hes established himself so no more fights.

Should note he doesnt show any aggresion to the other 3 males currently

So we have our first potential casualty, nothing to do with levels. A blasted cherry shrimp got sucked into the filter and gunked it up, surprisingly the little ****** survived and was jumping round the too of the tank as he fell out the filter. Got him back in the tank though, will keep an eye out as he's paler than the others.

Can anyone recommend a fine mesh for going around the intake pipe or something to stop it happening again?

The impeller was jammed solid though and had to be removed and cleaned.

Changed another 10 litres, dosed with prime and stability and gave a very light feed. Will test levels again tonight as I'm away from tomorrow morning till Saturday evening so hoping it will all be OK.

Very very tempted to swap over to a different tank, while the edge looks great its a bum ache trying to work on it with that narrow opening.

Shrimp can be suicidal, you could use this:

https://charterhouse-aquatics.com/s...eggxKDSJAWNIArg5x3-Aak3GWGc7_-6EaAh-dEALw_wcB

I think it’s available in pets at home.

That sponge is quite fine so will need cleaning with weekly water changes (quick squeeze in the old tank water, takes 5 seconds flat). You’ll be able to tell if it’s clogged when the flow of the filter will be visually reduced.

The work gets easier once it is established.

Thank you for that, @b0rn2sk8 it has been more in depth than I expected but I'm loving it.

The albino corys are much more active than expected but they were like that at pets at home.

Its my lads tank and yet I'm getting so much pleasure from it, I'm leaning more and more towards a reef tank once this gets relocated, eventually.

I find tropical fish are a bit of a money pit because I went down the aquascape route that I can’t keep the same for more than a year (x3 tanks).

There isn’t a suitable phrase to describe how reef will go :D
