Your current Fish tank Setups!

Got any images of your aquariums?

I don't have any space for more than one tank downstairs so I'm quite limited in that regard and she won't let me have one in the bedroom no matter how I try and claim its romantic lol

Even if it takes me months to set up properly and get all the bits it will give me something to work on.

Thank you for that, @b0rn2sk8 it has been more in depth than I expected but I'm loving it.

The albino corys are much more active than expected but they were like that at pets at home.

Its my lads tank and yet I'm getting so much pleasure from it, I'm leaning more and more towards a reef tank once this gets relocated, eventually.

Just be prepared to splash the cash once you go salty :)

Am guessing its a no from a little research but reefer nano (45cm cube) suitable for bangaii cardinals? Even two females?
If not its flame cardinals

brown and green algae is killing my plants fed up with it thinking of going for a cichlid style tank with no plants but with and rocks and bogwood, the whole aquascape thing is a real money pit once you get deep into it plants c02 gear fertilizer ect. and getting the gas can be a struggle.think I'm done with it tbh.

but my tank is too small for african cichlids though at 80cm long pity i cant fit anything bigger in the flat.

anyways i could do with some fish that swim near the top most of mine seem too hang about the bottom

currently i have,

5 glowlight tetra
6 rosy tetra
1 Golden gurami

or perhaps a bigger shoal of one of tetras they might venture higher up in a bigger mob, no live breeders though any ideas ?

Gold barbs? there probably my most active fish, always up and down at the front of the tank. There not as placid as the internet would have you believe though.

Or male guppy's, (without looking im presuming rosy tetra's are not fin nippers?), maybe even female betta's (but not without research :)), you can get some really nice ones and because there labyrinth fish you wouldn't have to worry to much about your co2 dosing.

Ive got 12 glow lights and unless there's something happening with the tank you wouldn't really know they were there, they still like to bumble along the bottom and in the plants.

the rosys are okay peaceful they like too chase each other about but no interest in other fish, they can be comical at times fins up showing off amongst there peers. the gold barbs look nice.

Hatchets are nice if you have a lid.

no lid removed it the lights packed up but i could fit some perspex around the top to stop any jumpers though so could be an option. had some zebra danios once they were avid jumpers.

Looks like I've got another day of water changes tomorrow, which I guess will be a good learning experience for my lad when he's here.

Just got back from the mother in laws tonight and thought I'd test the water again.

Current results are:

PH = 7.2
Ammonia = 0.25ppm
Nitrite = 0ppm
Nitrate = 10.00ppm

So I know the ph has come down, think the Ammonia is down from last time. Nitrites have stayed the same but Nitrates are up from zero to 10.

What I'm not understanding is why I've got nitrate but no nitrite as far as I was aware you got nitrites before nitrate.

Am I over reacting or does my water levels need to be perfect?

No, that sounds good. Nitrite should be undetectable, but you’ll always have some nitrate and 10ppm is fine. All seems good to me. I have ran nitrate levels at 30-40ppm with no ill effects. Don’t forget, nitrite is converted to nitrate.

I’d say your tank is nearly cycled. You just want that ammonia level to be zero.

Have you tested your tap water? 0 nitrate would be quite rare in this country, mine is 20ppm at the minimum so will never reach zero and it has no ill affect, well none that I would say for sure anyhow. my tanks probably live in the 30-40 region.

Id expect your ammonia to stay like that for a few weeks at least, just do a partial water change bi weekly to keep it in check and im sure you will be fine, don't be tempted to clean your filter to soon (unless its actually clogged! being a new tank would be unlikely) :)

And remember, if you do clean it, clean it in the tank water, NOT normal tap water. The chlorine in tap water will kill the beneficial bacteria.

I would caution against the term fully cycled as there is still low levels of ammonia and the tank is still very new. The test kits can give false positives though.

The nitrite is being dealt with which is great, it means the bottled bacteria is doing its job. PH drop is normal, as the bacteria does its work it produces acid which lowers the PH slightly over time, this will eventually balance out with water changes and remain fairly stable.

The bacteria can double in 24 hours if there is sufficient 'food' (ammonia/nitrite) so once you get over the tipping point you are all good. Nitrates are fine, mine are 30-40 out of the tap, then I also dose loads more in my plant fertiliser on top of that. I'm probably running 50-60 in my tank, once it gets above 40 the API test kit is useless.
Still take it easy as the tank is new but it looks like you are coming out the danger zone for fish loss in a new tank:).

That's a good point on filter cleaning, you never really want to replace anything in there. Just give it a few squeezes in old tank water and put it back in. I've never replaced any of the sponges or ceramic media in any of my filters and they have been going years. I would only ever replace it when they start falling apart.

a random pic of my 4ft, a bit overgrown and awaiting a clean!

all those little white dots are thanks to the netrite snail, never again! I used to house 2 angles but one was getting picked on by the other and the barbs so had to be moved to my other tank, theres also a gourami in there and a rainbow shark that like to just hide, but he's a really good looking fish!

I've always wondered about this and how quickly it does, I do 75% water changes every 7-10 days and dose the tank capacity with prime before refilling but obviously there's a time period where chlorinated water is flowing through my filters before its fully dispersed. it always leave me wondering how much damage im doing to the bacteria farm in the filter.

I don’t know either, but I always dosed my new water with prime for 24 hours before changing to ensure it was thoroughly dechlorinated before adding.

Surely the prime is being fully distributed by you filling the tank.

I just dump Seachem Safe (powdered prime) in the tank and fill the tank straight up out the tap.

I always decholoinate the water I'm putting into the tank, just a couple of drops in each 10l bucket.
