Your favourite GTA game ?

To be honest I think Saints Row is trying to go along a slightly different route now to GTA.

GTA this year seems to take itself pretty seriously and at points looks like it's been impacted a bit by the news stories it's been involved in. Sure swearing is on the rise but getting deadly weapons early in the game is a lot harder and without littlerally going to buy a gun it's harder to just find random people carrying flame throwers or shotguns in their backpocket this year.

SR seemed to enjoy itself and offer what GTA offered a fair few years ago. Over the top stereotypical characters, sex, gun, drugs and more.

I think a lot of people are banging on GTAIV because it's missing features that a lot of people liked that the last gen games developed. But you've got to remember that GTAIV is the first of a new generation. For features and map sizes you've got to say it's on par with GTA3.

It's only the (almost) expansions on the series like Vice City and San Andreas that added the extra weapons, vehicles, planes, larger maps etc...etc...

GTAIV is the first in a new generation on a new engine, if GTA's offspring don't offer the features that SA and Vice City had and don't offer anything new and exciting... then sure, throw a wobbly.

By the way, what has GTAIV knicked from Saints Row? I'm a lover of both series of games, but can't say I've noticed anything stolen by GTAIV...

I think people just want to be cool to like GTA and are trying to create an almost PES vs Fifa style look to SR vs GTA.
I'm not sure Saints Row is even relevant enough to many GTA fans, not enough to turn it into FIFA v Pro Evo type of debate (which was always about the high production values/high sales v superior gameplay).

Yes, ultimately GTA and Saints Row are very similar in what they're trying to achieve, but so are CoD2 and Hour of Victory (though the gap between GTA and Saints Row clearly isn't as huge as the gap between one of the best WWII shooters and probably the worst).

IV is coming close but still Vice City is my favourite at the minute. Just loved the 80s setting.

Also have to agree with the people saying Saints Row is awful.

Good lord, some people are so attached to GTA it's unreal. Saints Row was excellent, they were undoubtedly similar, but Saints Row left GTA standing in several areas (voice acting, customization and vehicle handling), and obviously GTA leaves Saints Row standing in some areas (Bikes, Graphics and Soundtrack).

To slate Saints Row is ridiculous when you're praising GTA, because they are very similar.

Saints Row was very classy, it had a good story and some fantastic voice acting to push it (something that I think GTA4 is lacking). Saints Row also didn't *feel* as repetative as GTAIV because of the way it did things.

GTA4 without a doubt. I found the previous installments quite dull to play and hard to enjoy - didn't think much of the characters. The latest has everything; graphics, audio, story, immersion, atmosphere, GREAT main character, voice acting is spot on, the facial expressions/animations surpass HL2 (IMO)...and it's just so damn fun. MP is just the cherry on the icing on the cake.

GTA IV then VC closely behind. SA was terrible imo and I'd take the much more detailed city of IV over the 3 farely sparse cities in comparison of SA.

Thats bang on.
Too much brand loyalty.

Back on topic, Vice City has the best soundtrack by a mile but in terms of my favourite, it has to be GTA 3.
However, the gang loyalty system in 2 deserves and honourable mention. I have always hoped they would do something similar in a 3D game.

My issue with Saints Row was the handling. The cars felt as if they were on rails and I didnt like them. Also the story just didn't draw me in so I found myself not wanting to play it.

I did like some of the features, like the garage mode and the insurance fraud mini-games.

For me it's GTA3 and then probably GTA4. I spent hours and hours on the original aswell.

I hate both Vice City and San Andreas, I never got anywhere completing them, they were utterly boring with way too much to do.

GTA3 was the first game I played on the PS2 and It was one of the most enjoyable experience I had on the system.

You keep going on about how good the voice acting is in Saints Row, yet compare it to San Andreas (both the quality and talent behind the voices) and it's nowhere near! Although i guess you weren't aware of that because of your irrantional dislike of the "gangsta from da hood" theme (despite SR relying on the same theme heavily) stopped you from playing it enough ;).

Customisation options were praised but they were mediocre at best, even skate's player customisation was a lot better. I hear SR2 player customisation is greatly improved though.

And the vehicles in Saints Row I couldn't stand, they were way too exaggerated and everything down to regular people carriers were visually "pimped" in some way and they handled like a 90's arcade racer. Again, some people obviously like this and its a matter of opinion.

I just couldn't stand the whole exaggerated style of it. Each to their own though eh. :)

4 is great imo – Nico and other chars are top class, it has me hooked in and wanting to do more missions and stay in touch as friends. I am a bit of a gfx lover, so although not perfect, I am believing the city and having just unlocked the 2nd main island, its getting interesting

oh and multiplayer = fab :D

I am a massive fan of Vice City, huge 80s buff – so the whole era aspect of that game hooked me in and I was disappointed in a sense to complete it.

3 I will always remember just for the wow factor in coming from enjoyable yet ugly GTA 1 (missed out 2) - 3 was a good game for what it offered, I liked the zones in which gangs resided and the uniqueness this made in the cars.

I didnt think saints row was terrible I just think it was missing something...The car handling wasn't the greatest and it just felt really sluggish. It had some nice touches but it left me wanting tbh as it didn't engage me as much as GTA VC or IV. Also Nokkon I honestly can't agree with you with regards Voice Acting, it's bloody brilliant in IV.

I compared them before, the voice talent behind Saints Row is streets ahead (as in actors abilities).

Erm... no. Saints Row was nothing like Boys in the Hood or Menace to Society. Not even close. So I don't know where you just pulled that from.

No they weren't. The player options were fine, maybe not as defined as the system EA have worked on for YEARS, but still good, but I was talking about the ability to paint cars in regular, metallic or pealescent and also pick my colors, as well as putting hydraulics etc.. in the cars. The editing of cars in Saints Row is something that Rockstar have NO excuse for not having.

Some would call it stylized. I didn't have a problem with it, but it's one area that it needs to catch up with GTA on. Let us not forget that GTA has had 7 different versions now compared to Saints Row's 1.

I just couldn't stand the whole exaggerated style of it. Each to their own though eh. :)
Nothing was more exaggerated than the style of San Andreas. I understand why some people would like it though.

It's about as far from 'bang on' as you can get. It's actually called an opinion. Just because the majority of us prefer a more successful game (sales, history etc) doesn't mean it's 'brand loyalty' or anything other than just a preference of a better game.

SR was a poor man's GTA - everyone knows that. They tried to rip it off and done and OK job, but nothing more. GTA4 drinks SR's milkshake, it drinks it AAAALLL up. ;)
