Your pet peeves in games.

ALL first person shooters (this applies to mainly single player)

Why?

Simple. They are constantly going after more and more realism in games yet in every FPS i have ever played, you can shoot someone, and they will just flinch a bit and then go back to normal??? Some are worse than others as well, i mean some games will have you shooting someone about 10 times before they fall down dead.

As soon as this happens in a game, all sense of realism is lost and until games developers learn this they will continue to do so.

This is true, however while the graphics are constantly being worked on, they are not after 100% realism, because this would lead to bad game play - it would change to whoever is seen first dies without a chance to react.

This is why I always play hardcore mode on CoD MP: one shot almost always = death.

The bit where I have just got to in Deus EX HR where if you had [blank] replaced that a certain boss fight near the end is harder. Much harder.

Seriously wtf were they thinking. I am seriously %&~@ed off!

That is why i said this mainly applies to single player ;)

For example, i am playing Call of Duty 2, it looks great, it is all band of brothers esque e.t.c. You are getting pulled in by the great graphics and sound. Then all of a sudden you shoot an enemy in the leg, he flinches, then continues to run about like nothing happened. In that moment all hope of being absorbed into a game is lost.

Civilization 5 everytime you start it you have to watch that stupid intro movie.

I know I can skip it with the config! But then all you get is a black screen for aaaaaages.

Missed that bit. Fair point, but wouldn't it then make it a bit to easy, if every npc is a 1 shot kill?

How though? The trouble with NPCs is that they are dumb. Lets assume that you also die to 1 hit (To keep it challenging). It doesn't matter how carefully you program the AI, either you will have AI that walks into you before it notices you and can't hit you from point blank range, or you are going to occasionally have AI shooting you from 7 miles away with a pistol because your head poked above a ridge way for 0.142 seconds. You can tell them how much to "notice" the player and how accurate to be, but those figures will not match every situation.

Don't get me wrong, I love a sneaky shooty, 1 hit kill type game, but I've never seen one that doesn't either have useless AI (Making it dull), or occasional ridiculous impossible shots (Making it hair pullingly frustrating).

I have always thought a suppression system in games is the best. Basically you are more likely to die if you are out in the open. If you get " shot" by the enemy, you arent actually getting hit but instead, you are close to being hit.

This would make it more realistic in terms of your own playable character being able to be shot and carry on.

1. Unskippable Cutscenes, same as everyone else I expect. Really no excuse for it cus it would take like 2 lines of code. An if statement is like the first thing you learn in programming.

2. Combination of the above and said cutscenes before boss battles. Utterly retarded tbh. It's a sure sign that there either wasn't any QA or their QA were themselves completely useless.

In no particular order:

1. Not being able to change the FOV (I'm looking at you Borderlands)
2. Broken/non-existant Anti-Aliasing (again Borderlands)
3. Instead of creating a proper mouse & keyboard control scheme and menus, map the mouse and keyboard to the gamepad scheme
4. Item based DLC. Maps/Missions/Quests etc are fine but having access to powerful items at the start of the game breaks character progression. The Witcher 2 and Dead Space 2 are the most irritating examples of this.
5. Losers who actively look for and use exploits in multiplayer games.

There are more but those will do for now.

They are working on this too. From the gameplay trailer i watched of Metro : last light.. the way the enemies react when you shoot them was very impressive.. a headshot was a headshot.. 3bullets to the chest and they werent getting up, which is a far cry from the first game where you repeatedly put clips into humans and monsters and they'd just look at you before shooting/jumping on your head :p

Unskippable videos every time you start a game should be a hanging offence imho
This, so much.

To add to that:

Bad story/dialogue. I don't mean cheesy stuff, because some cheese is good. I mean really awful stuff that breaks immersion and the believability of a game universe.

Boss fights. To me the whole concept is a bit of a joke. I appreciate more challenge when it comes to an important enemy character in the story, but not just for the sake of gameplay (and in fact in a lot of cases it hurts the gameplay). They had their place in old games, but now I feel they break immersion just like the above point.

Depends what genre though. I'd agree that boss fights suck in everything except RPGs. In those, they are great and deff required.
Other genres have no need of them.
