Your top 10 gaming moments!

It came out nearly 10 years ago, if you havent played it yet, your not likely to now.

Nearly 10 years... I'm getting old!

In no particular order...

Half Life: Train Ride and "Unforeseen consequences" scenes.

Zelda 3/Zelda 64: The feeling of being 'sucked in' the first time you played. Total immersion and lack of awareness for the passing of time!

Final Fantasy 7: Various points in which the 'epic' nature of the game was made apparent to you. I know that's quite vague, but if you've both played it and loved it, you'll know exactly what I mean.

Deus Ex: Most of the game. The Matrix inspired film-esque sequences.

Starcraft Online: Had my bottom well and truly kicked for the first time, but it was still an amazing experience.

Super Metroid: Getting lost in the game world, but never becoming a chore.

Duke Nukem 3D: The comedy touches.

Tie Fighter: Flying wingman for Darth Vader.

Quake 3 Online: Again, playing for the first time was a memorable experience.

Team Fortress: Practising concussion gren jumps with friends at 3am was brilliant fun, all courtesy of my fantastic 56k connection to the web.

I just don't get these sorts of experiences anymore... Am I old, or are games rubbish now? Discuss. :p

Again, no particular order but all memorable:

1. Thief - Haunted Cathedral level. Never have I papped myself so much playing a game before or since.

2. Aliens vs. Predator - Last Man Standing deathmatch. Being the only marine in a level full of people playing as hacked off aliens is fairly daunting!

3. No-one Lives Forever - listening in on enemy conversations. They didn't have to put it in the game but I'm glad they did. Comedy gold.

4. Max Payne - bullet time. Mentioned enough already.

5. Grand Theft Auto 3 - Freedooooom! The sheer scale impressed me no end and getting 100% felt like I'd really earned it.

6. Another World on my mate's Atari circa 1993 - I never got past the third level but damn it was fun (I've since completed it :p).

7. Duke Nukem 3D - playing my mate via modem for the first time. Kicking someone's ass from five miles away was just revolutionary. Probably the same feeling mortar teams get in the army. :D

8. Delta Force - knifing your sniping mate. When you held jump, you bounced along without making footsteps, allowing you to sneak up on people. You'd be shaking right up until the glorious moment of triumph, and glorious it was. The sheer panic involved if they spotted you was unrivalled, as you stabbed at them furiously while they tried to off your bouncing character at point blank range with a sniper rifle! Worth the 3 kills you were awarded, but I'd have done it simply to hear the hilarious gargling noise of my downed enemy.

9. Half-life - Every other moment. Immense, tricky, innovative, enthralling, funny... Just great.

10. King's Quest V - Played it with my whole family as it was the first PC game we ever got. Got me into point 'n' click games, and took up about 25MB of our 40MB hard drive. Great story and very humourous - plus the fact that you could actually die gave it a rather sinister edge. Very happy memories of playing it. :)

I'm appalled that I haven't mentioned any NES gaming moments but they all merge into one big ball of endless fun - I couldn't possibly single any out.

I can't remember 10 off the top of my head but here's a few I recall :

Elite (PC) : The first time I managed to dock without the docking computer.

BF1942 : My first jeep race...what a laugh :p

Close Combat 3 (PC) : My first ever PvP game. Played my brother via a serial crossover cable just after we'd bought it. I've never **** myself so much.

MOHAA (PC) : Running at various clan based snipers, taking the lot out with my shottie and then seeing the flak fly as they all blamed each other - priceless :)
Some great games of 'head the nade' with a bloke called 'England4ever'. Running about in custom clown outfits in WWII has never been so much fun :D

Myst 1,2,3,4,5 (PC) : Oh the hours of hair ripping mental exaustion..but somehow managing to love every single minute of them. Classics the lot.

That's the one ! :D (I think, from my above post anyway)

Ahh yeah, the bit I was thinking about was in the Nebula around the time you take out the fuelling ships then you get that big cruiser jumping in, and it get's taken out - then just before the end of the mission the Satahanas Juggernaught come's steaming in :p

I love the radar at that point, a red blip just glows to fill the entire radar! And your jaw hits the ground when you see what emerges :p

Has to be my number 1 moment in any game :)

Here's my list in no particular order.

1. Elite (C64) - Achieving the status of Elite and having a fully maxed-out ship with intergalactic hyperdrive.
2. Phantasy Star 4 (Megadrive) - The moment that Rune returns and the tune 'Thray' is played.
3. BF2 (PC) - Getting my Veteran Mechanic on the first attempt about 5 seconds before the map finished.
4. Tactical Ops (PC) - Taking out the entire 9 players on the opposition team in the pistol round (going through three separate pistols in the process) after my team had died.
5. Baldurs Gate (PC) - Completing the entire Baldur's Gate Series (played sequentially) using a solo Kensai/Mage character, then doing it again with the Assassin/Fighter, then again with the Cleric/Mage... awesome fun.
6. Master of Orion (PC) - Becoming ruler of the Universe in the original Master of Orion... the later games just don't seem to be able to hook me quite as well.
7. Neverwinter Nights (PC) - Putting up with the lack of storyline and tediousness of NWN and completing both the original campaign and the Shadows of Undrentide expansion.
8. BF2 (PC) - Getting my first (and only!) gold star on BF2... in the same map I got 4 separate badges/awards for kill streaks, teamwork, commanding etc.
9. NFL Hockey (Megadriver) - Playing in a two player game with my brother against the computer and chanting 'fwoarquar' while shoulder charging the poor AI :)
10. Can't remember/Not important (PC) - Having my gf perform an act on me while charging around on several FPS games :D

1. First kill online.. (<frag> dum di dum.. oh, that was a human player and not AI! WOOT!)
2. Last man vs full team (8) and winning, to be congratulated by everyone on my team after for first time in CS
3. First PvP experience in EVE, to say my heart was beating is an understatement.

In no particular order -

In no order

  • Metting the soldiers in HL, i thought for the time the AI was amazing, hearing "Fire in the hole" then noticing the grenade landing at my feet.
  • System Shock 2, great atmospheric game, but meeting the midwives for the 1st time....little freaky to say the least.
  • Completing Secret of Mana with a friend, took us the best part of 2 weeks to finish it, when ever we were inside, we played nothing else until we clocked it.
  • Metal Gear Solid, when Snake kills Sniper Wolf
  • Briefing for the last GDI mission in Command & Conquer. "Destroy the b******, or prepare to die trying."
  • Having to defend the bridge during the english campaign in CoD, musical score really set the scene.
  • Frontier:Elite 2, Having the top ship and equiptment and selling it all for a fast fighter so i could do military missions for the Imperium.
  • Gravity gun in HL2
  • Capture the flag in Desert Combat, in a rare moment of teamwork, my whole team protecting me while i was carrying the enemy flag, unfortunatly i was killed by a bomber seconds before it was shot down, some1 else capped the flag, but the whole team congratulated me.
  • BF2, again witnessing unfamilar teamwork, 5 man squad, always spawning on me, every1 doing as they were told, attack/defend/repair/destroy. Most of the time we used buggies to move around capping CP's, we were capping faster then the old BH whores. It was teamwork worthy of a top clan, even though there was no communication the whole time except for me pointing out objectives on the map.

Probably got a load more, but my memorys short at best.

I know I'll have forgotten so many great moments, I've played too many games :o And tbh I'm trying to avoid just memories if I can, i.e. one of my fondest memories of gaming is playing Bubble Bobble with my Mum but it's not really a gaming 'moment'
In no order:

Zelda Ocarina of Time - Watching a mate play it and him entering Hyrule for the first time and us both thinking 'OMG it's so big!'
FF7 - The first cut scene.....oooooh, and then subsequently spending most of Christmas and the coming Winter playing it obsessively :D The first cut scene seemed so amazing at the time though, instantly drew me in.
FF7 - Beating Demon's Gate at the end of Disc 1 - I'd not levelled up enough so this battle took me forever to beat, I was so excited about finally doing it I phoned up my mate to tell him :o
FF7 - Finally getting a damn gold chocobo - That took me most of a Winter to do, or at least it felt like it did. Used to give my Mum progress reports so she knows a fair bit about Chocobo breeding now :D Such a satisfying feeling when I finally got one.
Sonic 2 - first time playing it - It was my first 'proper' console (Had a gameboy and C64 before that) and the speed of the game was so amazing in comparison.
Everquest - raiding in Kael and then ToV and the dragon battles - I used to love raiding in EQ1 with my guild at the time, we weren't high end really but ToV and Kael were still great fun to do.
Kotor - The twist - Such a surprise!
Doom - First playing it - first time I'd played a PC game and it seemed so much different than other games I'd played. Plus there was 'loads' of blood in it and I was only young so it seemed really cool :p
World of Warcraft - starting out in Shadowhaven - Again an 'oooh it's so big and pretty' moment.
Call of Duty - so many nice sequences - I can't narrow it down to just one but that game had so many great set pieces in it, yes it was linear but it did it so well.

To be fair, I had never played FF7 until the end of last year. I didn't know anyone that had a PSX or PS2 and a copy of it until I moved into the house I'm currently in 18 months ago. Believe it or not, but not everyone has played every good game out there. Knowing Aeris died (worst kept secret ever! ;)) definitely spoilt the impact of that part of the story.

As for mine, I can only think of a few offhand, and they've all been reminded to me through other people's posts in here.

  • The Half-Life opening train sequence - Absolutely amazing at the time.
  • The 'other' twist in FF7, about Cloud's past - I had aboslutely no idea about this story, since no-one mentions it like they do Aeris, and I thought it was brilliantly told.
  • The best Champ Man comeback ever - My first ever game, on the demo. Lost 2-0 at home in the first leg of the cup against the Conference leaders (I was second). They were absolutely unbeatable at that time, and I figured I had no chance left. Pushed for an all out attack in the second leg, and somehow managed to win 3-1 with a last minute goal. I never thought a game could make me dance round my room like a kid before that point. Bought the full game soon after, and haven't loooked back.
  • Last man left on CS - No individual moment really stands out for me, because it's happened more than once, but that sheer rush of adrenaline you get when you know everyone's watching you and there's an opposing team full of 5+ players all looking for just you is unmatchable. I still get serious nerves for it even now, after years of playing CS. My heart goes crazy and I'm trying my best not to panic and flub the whole thing up.

The music & atmosphere of the original Tomb Raider.
Playing Quake 2 immediately after installing a 4mb video card

This one in Farcry always springs to mind.
Shooting all the fish that dared to approach the shoreline when you leave the cave at the beginning. Then, when returning to the spot 10 minutes later, finding them still floating on the surface. That was truly amazing.
