FreeSpace 2...

"Dive! Dive! Dive! Hit your burners pilot!"

Some of you may remember that.

Is that the piece with the supernova and the madcap dash across the quad frantically trying to manage your rear shields and afterburners to get out before the entire area gets toasted? Because that was coooool.

me flying in one of the super heavy bombers, absolute nightmare, barely made it and by the end I had no rear armour :)

True, but I doubt many people have played every game listed here, and yet they're still going to want to read the thread. Most don't really count as spoilers either.

For example, I've never played KOTOR, but still mean to get round to it someday, and yet I still don't know what the twist is, because people don't blurt it out in threads constantly like they do Aeris dying. ;)

If you have seen the Crying Game, then the twist wont come as a surprise (camera pans down). ;)

Not in any order…

Doom III – The moment you first meet one of them Demons. You are trapped behind a glass door and you see it break in to the room next door. You know it’s coming for you. Then starts battering down the door. “Nice doggy”

RTCW _ I love this game from beginning to end. The game got more sinister as it went on but it was the “stealth” level outdoors that gave this game everything you could wish for in an FPS. I played this level over and over just to see if I could get round without the quickload button.

HALO - The "library" level is very tricky.. spoilers coming .. You have to follow a floating light-bulb which takes you into the heart of alien colonies and you are confronted by swarms of aliens which explode into a twenty or so "critters", which nibble and snap at you if you loose sight of them. Thankfully, "matrix" like sentinels helps you on the way.

Thief III – “Robbing the cradle", even the sound of it puts hairs down your back. If you never intend to play the full game, this is the one level you shouldn’t miss. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed. Very chilling!

Half Life 2- The whole game is so superbly designed from start to finish. Highway 17 level and in particular the railway viaduct, meeting the “striders” for the first time in the "Follow Freeman" level. But the one thing that stood out for me in he game, above all, is the facial expressions and emotions of the NPCs. Absolutely stunning.

Far Cry - The beaches and sea made me wanna grab my Speedos and head for Thomas Cook! The extreme detail is a pleasure, and sometimes you just have to stare back and look. Not for too long though is there is often someone in the bushes taking a pop at you. I particularly enjoyed the simple, short, yet spectacular hang glider - Superb!

Medal of Honour - Right plop in the middle is a superb reconstruction of Omaha beach landings that even Spielberg would have been pleased with. Took me ages to got over the beach discovered that I had “RUN” disabled –LOL

Elite – Who remembers running this for the first time. Wow!!

Rome total war - Fighting to occupy your first town and being responsible later for eliminating an entire faction. Oh yeah baby!

Star wars Jedi knight - Let loss on the light sabre for the very first time after a gruelling parade of puzzles and challenges.

I just thought of some.

1, Counter Strike Source: Watching an enemy die in a splodge of blood, sparks and ragdoll action :), and then going to loot the corpse of the M16 :P

2, battlefield 2 Demo: holding off the last USA base on gulf of oman for about 10mins from hundreds of MEC infantry/armour (If you count them respawning and attacking again). It was the beach base on the right, me (Assault) and my mate (medic) just camped the tower kept popping up and and waisting loads of enemys with the single shot, poor guys just kept assaulting over the open area from the middle base, they didnt stand a chance.

I'm not sure if it happened when it was just Sonic & Knuckles cart in sonic mode, probably did but I plugged in Sonic 3 as soon as I got it...
But the crazy end level where you had to fly through space chasing Robotnik who had stolen the Master Emerald, music was ace and it was actually quite hard...
After that it was the classic, floating island floats away and Knuckles waves goodbye to Sonic & Tails on their crappy plane... Also played a medley of music and showed some class scenes of the island.

How I loved the Sonic games, was a little let down by the chaos emeralds in the first one though... (Flowers grow a little higher...)

1) Spectrum - After weeks of addiciton finally getting Elite status. Fantastic memories. Just wish I had a beeb at the time :o
2) Duke 3D - Got this from a stationary shop still no idea why they sold it) and expected it to be complete rubbish. How wrong I was. First time I connected to Wireplay was awesome :D First telephone bill I had was sick :(
3) CS - Back before the wannabees every night was fantastic entertainment
4) DAoC - Seeing an enemy player for the first time whilst XPing in the frontier and trying to kill them despite the fact you were lvl 18 and they were lvl 50.
5) WoW - Taking a flight for the first time and marvelling at the immensity of the landscape.

1. First time i played a video game - Alchemist on the speccy - Wow!!!
2. Playing Hunchback on the speccy with my mate after school - we were only 5!!
3. Finishing Target Renegade on the speccy with my mate - we nearly couldn't breath with excitement when we got to Mr Big!!
4. First time seeing Street fighter 2 in the arcade - there was a crowd around that unit for 2 months.
5. Myself and a mate first stuck on Streets of Rage 2 on the Megadrive - arcade heaven!!
6. Mariocart Multiplayer - Endless fun
7. Monkey Island 1&2 - wit, intellegance, and great design
8. Wolfenstein 3D - A new era in gaming was born
9. Halflife - first sequence with commandos, outstanding at the time
10. First time i stuck in my Voodoo2 and played Unreal - not a great game but the step forward in graphics was mindblowing! Watched the animated title screen over and over.

Wish I could share more!!

1. Using the flame thrower tanks on Command and Conquer. Being crap at RTS, I had built an army of 30 tanks and obliterated the enemy base.....the animations of people burning to death still crack me up.
2. Playing Unreal for the first time, and upgrading the default plasma gun about 10 times.
3. Watching my uncle complete Prince of Persia on the PC (the first time i had seen the game), without taking any shortcuts, in about 55 minutes. When the Prince went through the mirror, I was gobsmacked.
4. Installing Command and Conquer. This was real sick ****. Any game up till then, had the usual boring install sequence. I was like "wow".....a "real" console interface with beeps, those sound effects used in scifi films, and those rotating holograms of weapon blueprints etc etc.
5. Mortal Kombat: the first time i had learnt that you could do fatalities, I found the moves in a magazine, and being skint, just read it, and managed to memorise the one for Scorpion. Then went back home, (without telling my cousin,) and did it on him....his eyes popped out his head and he was like "****! how did u do that?!?"
6. Splinter cell turning on the heat-sensitive vision for the first time.
7. Completing Golden Axe (for the PC) for the first time with my aforementioned cousin. After that, I spent every morning completing it with him about 5 times on that holiday.
8. Total Annihilation: building a nuclear reactor and a nuke, and launching it.....dam....it took so long to build! Also, never mind the Krogoth....
9. Duck Hunt for the Nintendo: realising you could actually control the duck using the joypad, I never told my sister and found it hilarious.
10. Grim Fandango: the first quarter (it was too hard at the time so i never got past it.) But the music, acting and animation was cool.

ahhh legend.. i really wish i still had a Megadrive with all the old Sonic games.. i supose they wouldnt be too much to pick up from gamestation or somewhere.. but youve rekindled my love for Sonic & Co. :)

Don't know about picking 10, but here are some genuine standout moments

-Lugging the pc round a mates house to play multiplayer Doom 2 over a serial cable. I think over a 12 hour period we did nothing else but eat.
-Playing multiplayer Quake for the first time, first on the uni LAN and then the internet
-The first 3 levels of Unreal. First, the interactive introduction, moving through the spaceship filled with tension, reading diaries etc, but never actually getting in a fight. Next, the step outside into a huge, expansive, beautiful environment, showing off the awesome power of the Unreal engine. And finally, the third level when you meet a Skaarj for the first time, the perfect set piece with the lights going off one-by-one, finding yourself blocked in, and then confronting the beast. Phew, I'm sweating just thinking about it!
-All those days off spent playing Championship Manager
-Playing FIFA International Soccer on a display Megadrive at GAME in Southampton
-Seeing Elite running on a BBC Micro for the first time and being dumbfounded at how much depth it had
-Slapping in my first 3d card, the 3dfx Voodoo Graphics, and marvelling at 3d accelerated titles such as Forsaken, GL Quake, Quake 2, Carmageddon etc.
-Beating Four Kings on dm3 in the UKCL (Quakeworld)
-Beating Slackers in NQR4 (Quakeworld)

UT2003 - First holy **** kill in an insta game.
Quake 3- Rail and Rocket combo kill.
UT2004 - First ever Godlike, closely followed by my one and only Wicked Sick!!!
BF2 - taking out a full helicopter with anti tank kit.
Opening scene and train ride in both Halflife games.
Finishing Pyjamarama on the spectrum in one sitting.
First ever online game of unreal on dial up, i was gobsmacked.

Wow, I love these kind of threads (mainly because they remind me of how get FF and Zelda are :D)

But first... :)

Battlefield 2: Sniping from the little USMC island on Wake Island and spooting a copter flying on the edge of my line of sight, blindly firing a potshot of discontent at it and blowing up the plane getting 2 kills! LOL! :D

Zelda: The forest temple tune - OMG! Does anyone have this tune anywhere? It makes my spine shiver. This game is my favourite ever, I was trying to persuade one of my work colleagues to get it today so she could give it to her kids - life is not complete without it...

FF7: Just the game... so good, so, so good.

FF8: Discovering a weird (or maybe correct?) bug in the game: Irvine lvl 99 (After a whole summer of fighting on 'The Island Closest to Hell') used his best shot (I forget what it's called - an ammo) against a T-Rexaur and killed him. From then on every battle i fought as soon as I shot the creature I was fighting it would die a turn later (Bahumat eat me you ***** :p) Was so cool, pwned everything.

Call Of Duty: Every time I killed a member of OCRAANA in a clan match I once played with them - to kill pros is so awesome.

Age of Empires 2: First ever game online, I used to play it every Saturday from 6am-12pm when we had Freeserve 56k and it was off-peak! :D

Empire Earth: Playing this so hard and often that I was one of the best players in its servers and 'known' by the best players. Despite it being a massively underated game with an average community it still was my best experience ever.

dont really have a top 10 but some of them:
kotor, turning to the darkside and finding out the truth

cs 1.0-1.1 (i think): getting 5 offers to join clans after about 2 days worth of gameplay
- again in my early days of CS, getting my 1st knife kill, that made me feel good

Serious Sam - played that on release over an office lan, that has gotta be the most fun ive EVER had in any game, mp or sp

CSS - killing my way into a clan, made me feel special as tbh im didnt think i was good at CSS and certainly am not anymore

SWG - before all this NGE lark it was a fun immersive game, key moments inc my 1st dwb run pre-cu, was fun but ultimately got cained, unlocking jedi the village way...18 week grind etc + jedi grind, boring but made some great friends in that time
