I always thought the outboard wheels were part of the aircraft, I had no idea they were put onto the aircraft by the ground crew!

One of my favourite aircraft the U2

Typically they only use the pogos (wheels under the wings) in hangers, taxi and take off, as the wings are built more like glider wings but with a bit more characteristics, they give them stability on the ground when the wings are full of fuel, and are released when there is forward thrust on take off

They don't need it on landing as there will be less fuel, once the u2 comes to rest they have metal ground contact strips on wing tips as it usually comes to rest with wing ground contact, then put back on pogos
