Z68 Extreme4 Gen3

New parts arrived today for my new PC:

Asrock z68 Extreme4 Gen 3
i5-2500k
Crucial M4
16gb Corsair Vengeance LP
Corsair H80

Fitted it altogether and went straight for 4.6ghz profile. Have installed W7 Ultimate and played BF3 for the last 3 hours. First impressions of the board are superb. Might try overclocking more tomorrow, but for now i'm happy as larry with that!

try tweak the voltages down. they are very conservative, and the lower the voltage the better :)

Just ran prime95 and checked the vcore under load using CPUZ. Its reporting as 1.296 - 1.304

I have speedstepping on so when not under load the speed drops to 1.6 and the vcore to 0.98 or something.

This ok?

Almost identical to mine, what temps are you getting while running prime for a few hours?

Exactly what volts I'm getting using all auto settings except 4.6 Auto OC profile guys :) 1.296 > 1.304

Temps using a Corsair H100 are 63Degrees C under Prime95, 65Degrees C under IBT standard, and IBT maximum (8 threads) takes it to about 74 Degrees C tops. Happy with that for now.

Agree with teh dude who mentioned stability over high clocks - 4.6 compared to 5Ghz ain't going to give you any noticeable FPS increase tbh!

question. is it best to use LLC or not?

it seems i can't get 4.6ghz stable with 1.3v

multiplier at 46
turbo power limits 200, 190
vcore mode to offset mode
offset -0.030
LLC level to 2.

is it because i'm using LLC?

or i have a feeling i have a crap chip..

Is the auto 4.6 profile stable, I'd be amazed it wasn't.

auto 4.6 profile gives silly vcore of 1.35-138v

1.35v in bios for 4.6 is far from silly, with vdroop your chip will be getting 1.31ish under load, and that is perfectly normal and well within safe limits (Even if you think 1.35v is safe limit like me.) ..... LLC can help with Vdroop, but when intel actually spec a certain amount of vdroop in their designs it can also cause problems. If it works then great, but if not then that's fine too. That's overclocking.

when only 2 or 3 threads are in use the vcore goes higher 1.34-1.37v. when all threads are in use the vcore goes to 1.32v which is ok.

also LLC brings the vcore closer to the vid. which i thought would be better

and using auto 4.6 profile my idle vcore is higher, 1.09-1.1v @ 1600mhz, it should be 0.94v

The odd voltage spike is fine normal and to be expected, just worry about sustained load.

LLC does as you describe, but Intel spec Vdroop so sometimes you just have to set voltage in bios with it in mind to get stable.

The Asrock oc profiles don't use much LLC but set voltage with vdroop within intel specs it appears, so whilst bios voltage setting may look slightly higher, the actual voltage is perfectly fine.

With regard idle voltage, are you sure you're correct as these chips use multiplier overclocking so idle should be completely unaffected.

surely LLC stops the spikes more? if ocing manuelly.

That's the theory, but it can be too aggressive and cause instability in a cpu that's designed to expect it...Saying that, too much Vdroop can cause problems too if it's out of spec, hence why this setting exists.

well i've now set it to:

multiplier at 46
turbo power limits 200, 190
vcore mode to offset mode
offset +0.030
LLC level to 4.

it gives 1.3v~ under load ... in ibt it gives 1.33v

but the bios says 1.304v. surely in windows it should have vdoop?

even at stock the bios says 1.750v which is same in windows under load

You'd be better running at the default Asrock profile than that in all honesty.. I've been running and testing it for days and it's given me nothing at all to worry about. If you want to manually clock I'd say that LLC setting was too aggressive and should be lowered a notch or two. You'd then need to check load voltage and maybe raise it to compensate

LLC level 5 is the lowest which gives 1.275v~ in the bios and is same in windows under load

it seens the bios is giving the true under load reading

even when everything on auto/stock the bios reading is the same as in windows under load

I set XMP and ram to 1.5v

Load Optimised CPU OC 4.6
Disable Spread Spectrum
CPU Core Voltage to Offset +0.010v
CPU LLC Level 4
CPU PLL Voltage 1.750v

Everything else on Default

This gives me 1.32v in bios
0.960v Idle in Windows
1.312v Running IBT

Stable as a Rock 24/7 :D
