*** Zelda: Breath of the Wild ***

Played an hour or so today on the Switch, loving it thus far the scale is awesome.

Having said that, definitely noticing frame rate problems whilst panning and the likes. Nothing game breaking obviously, but it's certainly not smooth at all times.

Full disclosure, I have not played the game and do not own a Switch.

I know saying this on launch day will get me many "thumbs down" but I am sceptical of the 100/100, 10/10, BEST GAME EVER IN THE UNIVERSE publicity this game is getting.

Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time were groundbreaking console games in their day. this does not seem to fit that bill.

Nintendo are no longer the pioneers they once were. I am not saying they cannot make "Good" games, but right now, their reputation proceeds them and affords them an element of goodwill with their player base who are emotionally attached.

I have watched Twitch streams most of the day and yes, I have seen some nice gameplay elements, I have saw nothing to warrant the attention it is getting. If not for this single game right now, the launch of the Switch would be a complete and utter disgrace so it HAD to score well.

Mine didn't come today.

For some reason GAME decide not the ship my copy of the WiiU version until late yesterday.

Don't actually have time to play this weekend anyway, but still why ship it so late.

I totally agree that this launch is quite pathetically limp wristed on Nintendo's part and that Zelda is ABSOLUTELY a blindspot for most reviewers. However, I don't think it's fair to judge a game like this by the sum of it's parts you've seen on videos etc.

Open world games are absolutely about sinking into the tone of the overall experience. It's how all these elements blend together through one lengthy play session that makes the difference in the end. Far Cry 4 is a classic example for me. A fairly derivative game that doesn't take too many risks yet it absolutely sucked me in for hours at a time and it stands as one of my favourite games as a result.

Edit: I haven't played Zelda yet either :P

Delay on my Wii U version from Amazon which has also held up my Switch version :( Offered me a £5 gift credit and a download code for the Wii U version.....I WANT THE PHYSICAL GAME GOD DAME IT!!!!!!!!!

Goddammit.

I think I know the cause... a certain company didn't make enough copies to go around... low/non-existent stock of WiiU Zelda confirmed! There goes my plans for a good weekend...

*middle finger at Nintendo and walks off*

Not got very far yet but am really enjoying it.

I've not been a hardcore Zelda fan as found many of the previous games too restrictive and lacking any feeling of exploration but this has a much more open world.

I agree the launch is light but with Zelda being such a massive release it would overshadow everything else so better for Nintendo to get this out and then the next bunch of games can take their turn in the spotlight.

Meh, my Very order got cancelled, but all the Argoses around my office have a load in stock so I just popped down there.

Minor shrine spoiler.

lmao. I'm just doing the stasis shrine. Got over the first obstacle no probs. Hooned it up that ramp, didn't know a ruddy boulder was coming down at full pelt :D

Play it and decide for yourself. Been playing for a few hours now and the frames constantly dip, and are a complete disgrace in some areas. I had a headache for the first hour.

I'm still loving it though.

I've played for between 2-3 hours on the Wii U and this is not my experience at all. It's been running quite smoothly.

On Wii U, also getting some major frame drops. Why on earth the stupid smoke effect, it looks bad, it's hardware not capable of doing the mist/smoke correctly, but it looks out of place when they have it. They could just as easily not had any smoke/mist effects in 99% of the places they have them, it would actually look better. Some bits like in the forest where it gets dark, you get a lot more misty/smoke effect and that is where my frame rate tanks.

Also had one crash loading into a fast travel point after, 3-4 hours of playing maybe.

It's decent, so far maybe overly easy, could do with being a bit harder to be more enjoyable, not insane hard but trash mobs offering SOME danger would be nice. Hard difficulty as a DLC(is that still what it is or have they gone back on it? didn't see a difficulty option) is absolutely ludicrous.

I play the Wii U so infrequently I keep forgetting how uncomfortable the tablet controller is.

Is it worth buying a pro controller?

It does get harder. The bit I'm at Bokoblins are taking 2 hearts with each hit and I only have 4. The most difficult though is having enough/good enough weapons to take on many enemies without running out.
