Yeah the 12400F/12600K is supposed to have 10 cores so it's hard to see how AMD will keep its current pricing.
I watched an interesting video, they was stating the Intel i5-12600K could be the 5800X Killer at 5600X Pricing. Sounded promising if this turns out to be true, big if though.
Then AMD Zen can hit back with the 5900 and 5950XT's with V-Cache for a decent gaming performance uplift, until Zen 4 is ready.

I don't think its going to matter as much as some people think, even if the equivalent i5 is going to be under £240 its already been said that the performance increase over Rocketlake is about 80% due to DDR5, someone has apparently tested it and DDR5 is not going to be cheap.
However i do think the 5600X will come down to £200 or maybe even a little under.
Most people don't buy 12 and 16 core chips just for gaming though so it's the mainstream 6 and 8 core where the battle will be fought.
If Intel wins in this segment then it's going to feel like a long wait for AMD till Zen 4.
Can still be used with DDR4 though so no need to splash out on new ram right away.
Maybe, but probably not until the pandemic is under control and the current back log of shortages has been worked through. Short term I think CPU prices will creep up.
which is why i think Zen 3 will get a price cut but if rumours are true without DDR5 you're not going to see much of a performance gain over Rocketlake and if DDR5 prices are high its not going to be much of a threat to Zen 3 until those prices come down, it means changing the board, and the high priced RAM as well as the CPU, by the time DDR5 becomes affordable Zen 4 should be on the market.
Why would anyone pick zen 3 though even if they are the same performance since your buying into an EOL platform stuck on old DDR4 vs a newer platform that's optimised for a newer Windows which offers a CPU upgrade path and even if you can't afford DDR5 now you can still drop in some in a years time for what your saying will be a further boost.
I think some people will get the full DDR5 system just to have it but beyond that you're left with people who are just looking at cost and / or simplicity or they will wait for things to settle out of this transition period.
I don't think people with Coffeelake / Rocketlake / Zen 3 or even Zen 2 are going to change their Motherboard now for the new CPU to wait for DDR5 prices to come down, they will wait or shop as tho Alderlake doesn't exist, another reason for the price cut on Zen 3.
Some of those with CPU's older than that might be looking for new long term CPU's but even they will wait for DDR5 prices to come down.
Is there any indication that dual memory types boards will be common?
Because buying a DDR4 board at launch with the potential to later change for a DDR5 board won't appeal to many people.
Maybe a DDR4 + PCIe 4.0 only board will be a lot cheaper though than an all dancing DDR5 + PCIe 5.0 board?
You could in theory offer DDR4 and 5 on the same board. Although tracing that out would probably not be ideal for performance and not to mention expensive. Hmm probably not much advantage in going that route.
Probably no need to go DDR5 with 3D-V cache. A 16 core APU would benefit from DDR5.
If DDR5 offers more performance then people will buy it even if it does cost more, having the option to use DDR4 though offers people on a budget that already have a DDR4 kit the opertunity to upgrade now while keeping the cost down so is a good move IMO.
Because dropping in a cheap zen 3 processor is hassle free and it can easily last a few years and by that time ddr5 and AM5 will have matured. You also avoid early adopters tax while you grab some popcorn to watch the Intel and AMD incoming price and performance war.
Looking the current product stack the average system is 10c 20t So the meat of the battle is probably more like 8-16 cores

If you already have a board that supports zen 3 then you probably don't need to upgrade anyway.
If your upgrading from an older setup then it makes sense to spend a bit more for the futureproofing.
Most people buy 6 or 8 core CPUs, the 10, 12 and 16 cores parts put together probably don't even outsell 6 cores.

You're not going to get dual memory type boards for Alder Lake. The arch supports both DDR4 and DDR5, yes, but vendors will have to choose which to implement. And that's allegedly a directive from Intel (not that I can find where I read it any more).
Also, are Intel actually going to put 2 memory controllers on their die? I doubt that. In fact, I can see Intel going all-in with the marketing numbers game and not even releasing a DDR4 version for the desktop. Brand new 12th gen, brand new arch, brand new DDR5, brand new PCIe 5, our box numbers are better than AMD.
And we don't care how much any of it costs.

I kind of have a need now. Purchased a 5600x.
Busy gaming season is about to start with plenty of games coming out from Sep onwards plus atm I still have not found a stable ram overclock since introducing the 3080. (I been persevering since Jan)
I finally decided I was going to replace the ram with plug and play ram and thought by the time I am going to take off my cpu cooler might as well do a small cpu upgrade too.
I have another pc that needs an upgrade anyway for windows 11 as its still running a 3570k so I will move the 3700x to that and eventually give it too my parents.
