Can my GM stop me from buying stock from the store??

idd, id hazard a guess to say that some people on this website would never spend as much as the 'gamers' do on their rigs purely for games, other people use them for more than entertainment, function etc.

If your only after performance for things like video+audio work and 3d work. Things can be very cheap indeed, I setup an 8 core workstation for less than £700 by connecting 2 q6600 pc's together in parallel mode. Hard to believe people spend so much money on xeon workstations really.

Would that work? Didnt know ya could do that to be fair :)

but its discrimination against employees! :)
ofcourse they can refuse to sell you laptops, just like shops etc can refuse to sell you anything, and pubs can bar you.

You did what now..?

Thats like saying, don't buy a car, you can get a golden shovel for less.
They're both good at completely different things, a car would be good for getting places but not so good for digging a hole.
Macs have their uses, music/ video editing mainly, I use macs for logic pro 8.

And after using a mac for ages and going back to a less aesthetically pleasing pc isn't so fun.

Also, why would ANYONE buy a dell, build a pc out of the cheapest parts, stick a plasticy casing on, maybe one good part and a big cheap monitor and sell to morons.

Threaten to complain to his superior :D

That makes about as much sense as a chocolate shovel.

The only difference between modern macs and laptops is the case and the OS (not including the fanboyism that comes with both). So in essence what a lot of people in this thread are trying to say is why buy a mac when you are in reality spending an extre £300-400 on a case and OS?

And to those saying macbooks are much better built you obviously haven't compared it to a decent windows laptop. (eg not a £400 acer etc.)

This coming from a guy who contemplated a mac but decided on an XPS instead as the mac wasn't good enough for my needs (and the same price as the laptop I eventually bought).

People would buy them as they can be cheap. I bought a pc for £214, which was fully functional and did exactly what i needed it for.

Spec me something close to that.

So please dont call me a moron

I had a Dell Latitude D520. Retail cost: £600. Average laptop, average battery life. Always needed to be woke from hibernation when I wanted to use it. Turning hibernation off meant it was out of juice when I ever needed it. Festooned with ports all over the shop.

I have (as a secondary laptop) an Acer. Retail cost: £550. Crap laptop, abysmal battery life, even with hibernation on. The damn thing is always out of juice when I need it. It has Vista on it and although I can see some of the merits of Vista it gets in my way.

I have a MacBook. It cost me £649 of my hard earned cash (I didn't pay for the other two one was works laptop and the other a freebie from a business deal). The battery on the laptop lasts around 4 - 5 hours unless I hammer it with Aperture/Photoshop. Makes no noise unless it is hammered, no random fan spin ups like on the other two. It never hibernates and is always ready to go as soon as I open the lid.

What I am saying is the MacBook works with me rather than against me. It does what I need it to do when I need it to do it. The operating system helps me get done what I need to do. It looks good when out and about or around the house.

That's why I will layout my hard earned cash and that's why it will be replaced with whatever the new MacBook is when the time comes.

If these aren't the reasons why you would purchase a laptop then that's great but there is no need for the usual immature comments.

But I thought Macs were mega overpriced and a world-beating gaming rig only costs £7.42 to build?

Regardless, it's more the BAWWWWWWWWWW MACS ARE GHEY attitude in these threads that amuses me, I completely understand why anyone with more than a passing interest in PC gaming would and should steer well clear.

I just love the bile and venom from poor people, mostly

The Macs are gay and overpriced always raises a smile with me and I agree with you sentiment on the bile and venom.

Durrr... why get a Mac? Only losers buy Macs. Macs are overpriced, you dork. Macs are crap. Mac mice don't even have more than one button... how ghey!

Oh, hang on. Just realised I own a Mac too. And thinking about it my Mac Mini boots up from cold in 18 seconds and is then ready to run. My Windows and Linux PCs are more powerful yet take longer to boot and get something to run... especially the Windows box. Damn.

Start -> control panel -> power options -> advanced -> select "when I close the lid standby".

Thanks for that. I am somewhat experienced with computers, you know?

Set to that it will run out of power a lot quicker than my MacBook. That's the point. I don't have to mess about with power savings or hibernation on the MacBook. I use it, close the lid, and open it later (sometimes days later) and it wakes ready for use.

I left the Acer for a few days opened it up to do some work and the battery was dead.

The MAcBooks in our lab are a real pain, very unstable, very hot, major power problems, dead pixels, not switching off properly, USB problems. The hardware failure rate of the Macs far exceeds the IBMs, andthere are more IBMs than Macs even. No more Macs will be purchased in our lab. We figured if we buy IBMs for everyone the money saved can buy a nice cluster which would be massively beneficial, unlike a bit of brushed aluminium or OS X that will be booted into for a whole of 5 minutes a year.

one person has made the sensible suggestion but you seem to have ignored it, if you buy from apple direct through someone with HE discount you will get 14/15% discount instead of 10, and should be able to get £95 off and ipod and £60 off a printer (which actually means you can get a free ipod and a free printer if you choose the base models), you could then sell these and effectively have an extra £150 off the price

no he just wants to make the margin selling it this week to hit his number because some businesses are coming up to half year end and every £££ in the bank counts. selling to you asd a staff sale gets him nothing, selling it to jo riggs for 10%+ margin plus a carepack or something nets him love from his area manager for a day or two.

Interesting. Both my previous employers had Macs (iMacs and MacBook Pros) and they proved to be less troublesome than the PCs.

My new work is being switched from no-name rubbish to Dell and so far the Dell have proved to be very reliable just like they did at my previous employer.

That would be be, but the OP didn't listen. :(

There was only one way to achieve this level of precision: mill the unibody from a solid block of aluminum using computer numerical control, or CNC, machines — the kind used by the aerospace industry to build mission-critical spacecraft components.

WOW! What a revolutionary idea to use CNC milling machines in the consumer products market.

That really is impressive.

I made the mistake of buying a dell and the amount of problems I had with it was stupid.
Hard disk failure, overheating problems, the crappy bundled **** that comes with it slowing it down, it eventually died completely after about a year. Thinking, well thats a grand down the *****er.

Maybe its personal experience but I don't see why people would buy a dell, you can pick up cheaper pc's if you just want them for internet and office.

You can pick up cheaper PCs but for the convenience and the support of a large company it makes sense for a lot of businesses to simply go with what they know. I've not bought a Dell and don't really intend to but many places where I've worked use them and they simply do their job, very few problems and if there are then the aftersales support seems to have been quite good in terms of replacing what is necessary.

And as has been said of course your manager can refuse to sell you anything, at that point you are the same as any other customer in the shop but you are getting a 10% discount so are comparatively less attractive.

He can do this, however he's a right **** for doing so.

I'd complain to his boss tbh, just because you're an employee doesn't mean that you can't buy things that you want.

If he tried this with me i'd buy it anyway, if he then took it further i'd do the same.
