Dawn of War II Beta Thread

Say what? Fully upgraded Force Commander + Assault Marines wins against avatar toe to toe. Pretty easy to kill imo.

2 Dreadnoughts, 2 Assault Squads, 1 Carnifex and several other ground units were wiped out against 1 Avatar in my game. We lost the middle but thankfully the guy controlling the Avatar went awol and we managed to sneakily take the other two Victory Points.

I think the bigger problem is having a game go to the stage where you can get Avatars and still have them matter. Even in a 3v3, the game is won or lost right at the beginning, someone will lose an encounter and be forced into a retreat which is just them handing over the rest of the map... sure you can get to tier3 in 3v3 but the game was decided long before then.

To me it just has a bit of a topsy turvy way of playing, one team / player will dominate the map from the off and the other won't have any way of getting it back. Seems to me they should reintroduce the fortification of points, even maybe giving the power nodes an option between generators or turrets, then atleast if you're forced to retreat you aren't going to lose everything by the time your units are back in play.

From what ive pld ive noticed this:
VCP = is won at the start, if you can control the points early you pritty much win, u hardly ever see T3. Its a fun mode but something needs to be done about T3.

annihilation = Ive had some really good 3v3 so far in this mode, it becomes more about how your team works with each other, you cant just rush to the enemy base at the start or you will get kiiled. Because it takes such a long time to kill there main base, you have to attack with a large force. Much more enjoyable for me personaly.

Overall i like COH more, but im still getting this game, its a hell of a lot of fun to play.

also turn off XFIRE !!!! i have a 4870 and with xfire on it couldnt run the game maxed out. Soon as i turned xfire off i could run it max no problems. Its an xfire bug, hopefuly they will sort it soon.

Eldar can pop out Rangers, or Banshees, or fast tech to Wraithlords. I'm pretty darn high on the team leaderboard and in my games there's a lot of back and forth as we counter one another. Typically, a match will come down to the wire.

Is DoW2 looking like it's going to be a great game? Just wondering whether I should pre-order it or not?

Best thing to do would be going into steam and trying out the free beta.

Personally while I enjoy it, I find it simply isn't my cup of tea. It is not a typical rts (really nothing like the original dow), it is a lot like a combination of company of heroes and world in conflict.

Gone are the epic battles with bodies littering the ground, instead you have much smaller unit sizes and numbers, base construction is literally gone and the entire emphasis goes into managing units.

Theres nothing wrong with that but I think that there will be a lot of people who loved the first game finding the sequel to be something that won't really interest them like a classic rts.

They would have been better off calling it w40k..blah blah blah, it really isn't dow2.

This game has had something of a marmite effect on people, I love DoW2 beta and marmite and can't wait to play the full thing when it's released. I suppose the question is; do you like marmite? :p As has been said it's nothing like the DoW1 series. Try before you buy.

Definitely won't be buying this one.

They have taken an excellent PC game and dumbed it down for the console market in an almost insulting manner.

Just had a go on this and totally agree .... its soooooo boring :(
I spent a while trying to figure out how to build a new building, as far as i could see... you cant!? So wouldn't that make the 'Annihilation' option a bit pointless?

Oh it's just so disappointing, I dont even want to waste anymore of my time talking about it.

Dawn of War is superb, this is pants! What are Relic playing at

Well the annihilation option is that you annihilate the opposition. Which you do by killing the other team (annihilating them) and their base.

That is the point of that option. Understand?

I hope the single player/co-op campaign is good, because the MP modes in the beta are pretty weak. Could really do with bigger maps. Was quite fun to start with but it gets stale pretty quick - although this view may be influenced by the terrible implementation of the match finding system.

But it's pointless because once one side has the map control and is pounding on a base with tanks etc it's boring whilst waiting for the ridiculously high hp of the base to go down. You may aswell just give the victory to the side that caps all resource points instead.

Really - you do not know what you are talking about and your comment is just a result of your frustration that you did not get what you want and/or just don't get this type/style of RTS game.

This type of game would be more complex to implement on console due to the micro involved in managing units. In DoW1 I grouped units but mostly only into anti-infantry and anti-tank. then would just push which ever each forward to deal with the situation. With this game the units have a whole host of abilities which help in each given situation - the nade types, focused fire, suppression etc etc. I think trying to select the correct unit and then the correct ability in the midst of fire would be nigh on impossible, or at least harder in this sort of game than in DoW1.

it would take a very talented developer to implement such a system on a console. They tried with SC and failed.
