**Summer Transfer Thread: News, Rumours and Speculation**

I think you are right

Portsmouth look in serious trouble at the moment, its like they are already preparing for the championship, clearing out big earners, getting in loan players and old heads

a poor start will see them in a postion they cannot recover from even if the takeover goes through

I still think Wigan will be better than hull and bolton as well as well as the newly promoted teams, but then again it all depends on your new manager...all the nice football in the world wont help you if you cannot finish of teams, the baggies proved that last season

Yeah Pompey are a defo in my eyes! And im thinking Hull as they scraped it last season (even though they started off so well). So thats 2 below Wigan, then you have the likes of Burnley (who maybe a slight dark horse but Im sure they have a real small squad which doesnt help), Stoke, Blackburn, Brummies and Bolton who haven't really done a great deal in the transfer market!

So yeah I think we'll be ok this season! *fingers crossed*

I think Burnley will be safe.

Portsmouth and Wigan have sold so many good players they're much weaker now. Hull were dire back end of last season and I think if they lose a few early matches, confidence will plummet and they're in for a horrible season.

The problem is Wigan fit into that bracket of clubs without sticking out and unless I'm missing something are selling without replacing.

Heskey (Out) - Sinclair, Rodellega, Scotland (In)
Palacios, Valencia, Cattermole (Out) - N'zogbia, Thomas, Watson, McCarthy, Gomez, De Ridder, Cho etc (In)

Yeah I say you're missing something!

No, I'm gonna stick by my original statement :)

N'Zogbia isn't that bad.

Its because people like to speak without thinking, Cattermole is a thug, a talentless thug, Valencia was definately decent, though he went a large period at Wigan without making many goals or scoring many at all. Supposedly fantastic in preseason yet had a decent amount of time on the pitch against Chelski, the only time I've seen him with a UTD shirt, and never once managed to beat his man. Time will tell how good he is but for £16mil it was an easy choice to sell, if they buy a £5mil winger they'd have someone good enough to stay up. 3 goals and 5 assists from Valencia, hardly irreplaceable, nor would it cost the earth to find someone who can provide on that level. Valencia is ONLY a good buy at £16mil IF he can massively increase his assists or goal scoring in a better side, if he can't £16million starts to look massively overpriced.

It will be very difficult to judge who will stay up/go down till Sept 1st, even then a couple important signings or sales in Jan could turn a team around or drop them further.

With squads as they are now, Pompie, Blackburn and Hull to go down would be my guess. However people are saying Pompie are selling their big name players, Crouch, hardly irreplaceable, Campbell, terrible last year and completely past it, Johnson, shockingly poor defensively for a 17mil player, I wonder if he only ever looked "good" because he was alongside a declining by the game Campbell which conversely made Johnson look better by the game.

N'Zogbia is also a quality quality player, left back, left wing and can even play as a playmaker in the middle where he ran the Newcastle offence for a few games a long while back. Creative, pacey, good delivery, just chronically underused at Newcastle for some reason or another. Looked very decent since his move to Wigan and will only get better as his confidence and form grows IMHO.

I don't see how we need another striker really, we've got Berb, Rooney and Owen then Macheda, Obertan and Welbeck as youngsters

Playing Devil's advocate

Berb may have got a lot of assists last season but didnt really score as many as he should have (scoring nearly double would have been a good start considering the amount we paid)

Im not going to knock Roon as I think given the centre position he craves he should be worthy of 16-20 goals (although he hasnt yet done this before)

Owen was bargain basement and against Chelsea and Valencia he didnt really light up the games (albeit from the sub bench) - he is capable of scoring without doubt, but possibly not against the better teams

Macheda will be excellent but it could take a bit of time (he had an amazing introduction to the 1st team last season, but to expect that every game from one so young is too much even at OT imo)

Welbeck - he might be good but he hasnt developed as expected, still has time on his side though

Obertan - I will believe it when I see it (although he is primarily a winger so unlikely to be scoring that many directly) , reported to have a bit of an attitude problem ....as well as an injury that will keep him from playing for a month or two

As said these are all devils advocate, but Man Utd could fall flat on their collective face infront of goal - or we could score 100+ EPL goals ;)

I tell you what....I really do think that Hull will be a surprise package this year. When I look at the signings they have made this summer, plus Hunt today and this rumour of Negredo...I really do think they have a decent squad.

I'd say Hunt is a good signing for Hull, as for Negrado it is a risk for 12 million. I could see them going down and i wouldnt be too bothered tbh
