Massive earthquake hits Chile

Still waiting for the main event/feature. Got my popcorn and webcam views of various beaches etc.

Tsunami day! They should put this stuff on PPV.

The coverage of the quake has been rubbish as well. I'm flicking through the channels looking for devastation etc, but these TV people are just not making an effort.

How hard can it be, ffs?

If a Tsunami hit the Uk I'd be fine as well since I live on a hill. At least then we might get better coverage.

I suppose if you lived near to one you could drive to a nearby hill to get a closer look at the damage.

Potential tsunami timeline.

Also, its sad people have to go to the effort of stating they don't care. If you don't care why post?

I had thought of writing in my original post to ask those who couldn't give a toss to just not bother posting. Thought people here were better than that as this could be getting pretty serious but I'm just not surprised by some of the attitude here.

The front page of the BBC News website has that changing photo show, why is there a tornado there?

The tsunami hitting Hawaii has the potential to be awesome. Should be a spectacular event.

That's one word for it.

I'm on the windward side of Oahu, (Kailua: http://bit.ly/aKwQ8n ), and things are going a bit crazy out there with folks rushing around to get emergency supplies. The Tsunami sirens are going off routinely and damn are they loud. On that map I linked to the evacuation zone is everything on the beach side of North Kalaheo Avenue, so not even a mile from my apartment. Thankfully I'm 3rd floor so *fingers crossed* everything should be fine. Worst I'm expecting is a power cut.

No details as yet for how large the tsunami is going to be (reports vary between 4ft and 8.8ft, but no official wrod as yet), but speed is currently estimated at 500mph. We do know it will be multiple waves inbound though, will hit the Big Island (Hawai'i) sometime around 11:05, hitting island after island over the next 30 minutes or so.

All beach parks are closed, Police are having to send surfers packing (what morons, trying to surf a tsunami), Waikiki hotels are getting guests to go up to several floors to play it safe.

edit: I'm the senior sysadmin for the company behind ehawaii.gov, most of the local state and federal online services. Most of the servers I'm responsible are in an under threat area (the only civilian data center on the island. joy of joys).. this could be interesting. Hopefully I won't be having a long weekend!
