*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

Well, after thinking long and hard about this I've decided not to get an IP4. I have a 32GB 3GS and I can't see why I need the upgrade.

This is unusual for me, as most phones get changed after 6 months to the latest and greatest and I'm a total gadget freak.

But on comparing the IP4 and the 3GS I just can't see a need to make the change.

Facetime - Will never use it.
Upgraded camera and flash- think I've used my current camera less than 20 times in 12 months and have a very good compact camera already.
Retina display - Well that would be really nice, but have an iPad for movies etc.
iOS4- Will upgrade my 3GS to that for multi tasking/folders etc.
Better Motion control - Can't think where I'd make a use out of it

In a way I'm disappointed that I can't make a reason to upgrade, but with the cost to upgrade likely to be over £300 after I sold my 3GS, I just can't justify it in my mind when the 3GS is such a good phone.

Don't get me wrong, maybe in a week or two's time when I've had a play with one I might change my mind, but at this point I'm passing by.

Good luck to all of you who are getting one, I'll definitely be getting phone envy when I see people out and about using them.

Taff

I have been in the same mind set this past week but I've decided today to get the iphone4 as I'm probably going to upgrade later in the year.

So why not enjoy it from day 1 :D

read a few reviews now and not one has mentioned how much memory the 720p video takes up? Anyone located any info on this ?

Apple are about customer service, they'll try their very hardest to get your iPhone 4 out to you when they say they will. This may include paying off some package couriers :p

Here's the HD video math:

For 720p video the size of each frame is 1280x720 pixels that's 921,600 pixels--call it 1 million.
Using simple jpeg type storage, each pixel will have to contain a value for the red, green, and blue colors.
So multiply the 1 million by 3. Most video will need a byte to contain each of the red, green and blue colors.
So we need 3 million bytes for each "frame" of the video.
Video is roughly 30 frames per second so we are up to 3 x 30 or 90 million bytes per second.
Multiply again by 60 to get the bytes per minute: 5400 million bytes per minute or 5 GB/minute.

So far the calculations are based on not compressing the video, just pure raw video.
Most video can be compressed by a factor of 5 without degrading the quality in a noticeable way.
A good compression algorithm can do better than that say 10 to 20 times compression.
You can compress it lots more, as much as 100 times but you get lousy video. And the more you compress, the harder it is to edit and get smooth cuts between edited clips.
So if we assume moderate compression, say 20 times, a 720p video will require 0.25GB for each minute of video.
Audio will add about another 10%. So call it .3GB per minute.
But remember this is very dependent on the compression it could actually range from .1GB per minute to 1GB per minute.

Those tesco deals look tempting. Amazed to actually see 12 months contracts! If you order from tesco, when are you likely to receive the handset and are they taking orders for the white one?

Ive phoned carphone warehouse tonight and they've put my name on a boxed 16gb iphone 4 in the backroom, its reserved until 11. When i phoned they said they had only a handful come in.

That is sort of an integral part of camera mode on touch screens I thought.
As far as I understood it, the camera focuses on the area you touch, so you don't have to point the centre of the screen at what you're trying to focus on.

Well - i was supposed to pay £100 upgrade fee with Orange and would have if i could have got it tomorrow from the Orange shop but when i called to Order they only charged me for the phone and not the upgrade fee. So although i get it 24 hrs late i saved £100. Not only that i am slightly tiddly and England won. result all round

Wel looks like im gonna have to get my ass up to an O2 shop in the city centre tomorrow morn, mean while having to use my old Viewrty, GAH!, its awful!...and am willing to bet because of it getting to Belfast it wont be here for tomorrow!

Well yeah. I just assumed that was common on touchscreen phones. I've had it for close to two years on my HD and I assume the Desire does it as well?
