COD Black Ops looks pretty good on PC

Well what a fundamentally useless thread this is. It's impossible to tell if this game is any good because it's just full of exactly the same sort of moaning and crying about console kiddies ruining and people who think not liking popular things is cool as we get in any COD thread.

Absolutely, people were taking the **** out of some of the reaction on the Steam forums yesterday. What Ive read over the last few pages easily matches those vitriolic little sods over there. Wanted to get a better idea of whether or not this was worth a purchase and this place is full of knee jerk bull **** and bickering.

*Yawn*

Hi Chaps,

Went to midnight launch at Game and got my copy. SP runs fine and is awesome, but MP runs like ****. I get like 3-10second freezes every 45secs or get dropped from server, and I can't join most servers. Thousands of people are reporting this freezing error. Here are various solutions I have found (I cant try them yet, not at home so let me know if it works please!!)

  • Disable steam ingame overlay
  • set steam.exe priority to low in task manager
  • Set blackops.exe priority to high
  • Disabling ATI Catalyst A.I.
  • Open console by pressing `, type /cl_maxpackets 100

Apparently its all down to steam updating stuff while you play or something. Letme know if any of these works so I can try em when I get home!!

Cheers

The lag looks like a server backend issue, possibly with Steam, or with whatever servers Treyarch use to record the matches and track stats.

A similar problem happened with Bad Company 2. EA's backend login/stat servers were so overloaded it was almost impossible to get into a game for nearly a week until they brought more servers online.

To be fair it's almost impossible to stress test a system like that to accurately simulate the demand you get when hundreds of thousands of gamers are using the system at the same time. Still doesn't excuse the problem though!

Still, my copy hasn't turned up from Tesco yet, so maybe they'll have fixed the problem by the time it arrives.

If you are looking for MW2 with dedi support then buy Black Ops

It has nothing ground breaking, graphics are put to shame by BC2

But lag needs fixed ASAP

Any of you guys playing on Virgin Media ISP, ive heard that because their traffic shaping is currently so screwed that its including gaming data of some apps inc Black ops...

in other words lagfest...

Well they are hardly going to leave it as is are they,

Its not even been out 24hrs yet, and there was no beta to help tune the servers so give em a chance

This tbh, I'm after some balanced opinions on whether the game is worth it or not

It's COD - if you liked the others you'll like this one?
They haven't changed too much, which to me is great! Waiting til Friday to purchase this otherwise I won't get my work done for the week lol

Nope, ADSL here. And the jerkiness / lag is present in the menus as well which I doubt is a network issue ;)

For example. (After having put a few servers in your favourites previously) You go to the server browser and select favourites. There's nothing there. You have to wait like 15 seconds before they appear. Why?

You go to the server browser and check out all the servers. There are thousands. It is VERY slow to update. I haven't let it update all of them, it looks like it would take half an hour. At first if you double click on one, it doesn't let you join it. Okay, right click, Join... nope, nothing happens. You have to wait maybe 15-30 seconds before it lets you join a server, even if you can see one you want to join straight away! Clunky, unresponsive, jerky... just a bloody mess.

I'm on Virgin Media. I wouldn't be if I could get faster than 2mb ADSL though due to the over subscription problems and the ridiculous traffic management and traffic shaping policies.

There have been specific problems with traffic shaping and WOW, but other gaming data should be unaffected. I say *should*.

However I played a game of L4D2 the other night and it seemed fine - low ping, no lag. I doubt this current problem is specific to Virgin.

I am and it's definitely a lagfest, that's when I can get a game. At the moment the server browser does nothing.
