Robert Kubica has suffered "serious injuries"

I don't think it's career ending, provided he hasn't lost any function or feeling in his hands. I've broken a wrist and even with it plated back together, you certainly won't be driving for a while.

Look at Mark Webber, he came back from a serious injury as a result of that Cycling accident.

I agree though that I'd imagine many sportsmen and women aren't allowed to do anything dangerous as part of their contract. Rally driving is inherently dangerous, so that's got to be a real blow for Renault.

If its the same arm that was already being held together with titanium rods then i can't see him ever recovering full and it is no wonder there is mumbles of amputation.

Webber's accident was 5 months before the start of the season, so he had plenty of time to recover, and even then, it was a bit iffy..

I have a bad feeling for kubica for this season..

The pics and news look awful. I hope Kubica gets well soon and can make a full recovery.

While I want to know what state he is in there are so many different reports it is worth not reading to much, hoping he will be fine and seeing what the story is later or tomorrow!

the fact he survived at all from that crash is pretty amazing.

Multiple fractures to his arm/hand and leg - unfortunately surely has to mean he is out for 2011 season (or majority of) .....if the reports are accurate of course

The BBC report also states "they were x km from the START of the rally" - so if they werent even racing yet , was there a massive car failure to cause that extent of damage?

Im very glad he is alive, but its a sorry loss for the season ahead. If he ever makes it back to F1 it will be a miracle - but it surely has to be impossible for this season (I know Webber had a bike accident and broke his ankle or something, but this sounds 10 times worse...and multiple injuries as well)

Hope there is good news coming shortly

Italian police have impounded the car for potentially this reason.

following a high-speed crash that took place 4.6 kilometres into the opening stage of the event

Well I'm sure he will be getting a top Orthopedic Surgeon, so if they can sort it out, I'm sure they will try.

Pushed back again to 16:30 (3:30 pm GMT), best that I know.
pushed back to 17:00 now

Anyway this is the reason the injuries are on his right hand side

ok fair enough about distance from the start

Sounds like the surgury is a nightmare (given that the news conference is being put back further and further)

Hopefully everything is going ok

Hand surgery and hand surgeons in general are a very slow breed of doctors. They do take ages to do anything mainly because the hand is a complicated part of the body and requires intricate attention to detail to be fixed well.
