Wayne Rooney banned for three England Euro 2012 matches

Strange how Capello was saying his dad's arrest was going to be no issue and that Wayne was calm and collected - as a manager would you have picked him considering his history? Not shocked by the 3 game ban but I think Capello has to take a degree of blame here for this occurring.

He has given up on the England team, he is going next year, tbh I dont think he cares what his reputation is as he already has a job lined up.

Even worse.... Wales!

Got to love the bitterness of Great Britain

We have a better win percentage without him ;3.

Rooneys loss, Englands gain :D

tbh he might as well tell Rooney he is not going, build a new team around another striker/attacker, job done.

Rubbish, you will be watching the England group games come Summer 2012.

No I won't. The last full game I watched was against Germany. I've seen nothing more than a few minutes since. I didn't care about qualification and I don't care if we get humiliated in the next tournament.

Until there is a change in attitude from all players regarding playing for England including friendlies etc I don't care either. So much needs to change from managers of club teams and the players who just turn up for 'important' games.

You hear Terry and co spew fourth the same tired old cliches before each match about always being up for it when playing for england for them to deliver another half asleep performance.

I'd rather they played kids and let the 200k per week players get on with playing for their clubs.

Quite happy about this, we need Rooney fully focused on PL matches during the summer. England is a waste of time and space, it is a shockingly abysmal team that the likes of Rooney do not deserve to be saddled with.

Maybe I'm being daft but why does Rooney need to concentrate on PL matches during the summer, I thought that the major tournaments were scheduled so that they didn't overrun with the major leagues? If you want him rested and not playing any games over the summer that's fair enough but I'm not sure what PL matches he'd not be concentrating on.

Bit strong don't you think calling him shockingly abysmal? You may not like his character much but he is one of the best players in England currently.

You will, like you said you watched Germany, last big England game, Euro 2012 is in June, be nice and warm, everyone up for something to watch, offers on, going round to mates to watch the match, football is football, when its on its on, summer of 2013 we have nothing until Brazil 2014.

I agree with the kids but thats not going to happen, they are just as bad (mentaility) think they are world beaters at 21, we need to adopt the another style of play, but again its all down to grass routes, we battered Spain in 1996 at our peak now we cant hold a candle to the Spanish

I'm shocked to see the two biggest culprits of the word that we're not allowed to say on here now doing their thing :)

? Who are the two, please respond.

I think he should be included in the squad, but if the team that gets us through the group stage, at the tournament, is working really well, he wouldn't necessarily get straight back into the starting eleven.

Maybe but if he was not picked that would send a message to him, he cant keep doing this crap.

Another touch of irony about this is the idea of the FA appealing the ban and potentially risking Rooney being banned further for a frivolous appeal the same FA that banned the same player for swearing into a camera last season

At least Uefa aren't making up the rules as they go along, violent conduct = 3 game ban (as has been said already)

The idea of not taking Rooney whatsoever is ridiculous though, whether people want to admit it or not he's England's best player and should England line up against Spain in the first knock out round they'd stand a better chance with Rooney in the team than not

Cheets do you watch England?

Honestly coming from someone like you who supports a small Premeir league team and actually goes to matches i just cant stand most of our players. The way they act on the pitch (club level)is just childish and arrogant.

Prime example is a ronney elbow smash agaisnt wigan, Or the constant harrasing of the refs by any of the english Chelsea players, Blatant diving from Gerrared ....

Honestly when stoke were a championship team i didnt mind England but now i get to watch these players live most weeks i just cant stand them and cant bring myself to support them in the slightest.

I look thought the England team sheet and theee isnt one player on there i would think "hes a decent bloke works hard for the team.." I dont think there has been a likeable England player since Beckham.

Many of my friends who arent glory hunting Sky Sports experts think the same

iirc in this sort of ban only if UEFA contests their own ban it can be extended...
It was brought up on TalkSport last night (however it was late and I may have this wrong...)

Isn't that actually the entire point, Rooney is far more likely to act out when frustrated, how did Rooney do against Barca? Annonymous, how good was he against Montenegro, poopy. If we played a similar team against a top team, with two defensively midfield midfielders, which is perfectly possible, then Rooney just isn't the link between midfield and attack and certainly isn't a good enough lone striker. As with other players, he wants to play that inbetween role, when a team would be better off with specialised players in the positions they need.

As for being Englands best player, who has scored, assisted and been involved in the most England goals in the past year........ I'll give you a hint his name certainly isn't Rooney. Young, who has been by a truly massive and epic margin easily Englands best player since an England manager finally made him first team, has not only been incredibly good going forwards, but his work rate defensively is fantastic but he's also actually good defensively, he doesn't run back and make stupid fouls and give away freekicks, he runs back, makes good tackles, defends well, then bursts up the pitch with every attack to be out best offensive player. He brings more to the team than any other single player and has done for the past year.

Rooney isn't bad but often isn't good for England, I can't think where you'd want to play him, if as most managers, England went 4-5-1 against say Spain/Holland/Germany, would he play as the lone striker, terrible idea, take away a proper winger, or proper central midfielder for Rooney, even worse idea, so where would he play. On top of that, its exactly against those teams Rooney is MOST likely to get frustrated and do something stupid. He can't be trusted in the very hardest games AND his semi free role just behind the striker simply doesn't suit the team in the toughtest games either.

Well he scored from pretty much his only chance

It's hardly fault his manager and team mates left him horrendously isolated by dropping our top creator.

As a footballer Rooney is England's best player, that doesn't necessarily mean he's the one that constantly excels in the national teams starting XI, that may be someone like Young, Downing or Parker but are any of these better players than Rooney? No, of course they're not. Same argument stands for players like Lampard & Gerrard. The problem England have got (not that I care by the way) is that they've not worked on getting the best out of their best players.

Maybe it's down to those better players not taking the friendly games serious enough (in terms of withdrawals etc) thus giving the fringe players just happy to be in the squad more opportunities to gel as a starting XI who knows but I see no reason why a midfield 3 of Lampard, Gerrard and one holding player couldn't of worked before now but instead of trying this in the past 6 years England have instead decided to persist with 4-4-2 even though it doesn't work not only for the two midfielder's but also the strikers who play ahead of them.

Getting back to Rooney though his best goal scoring season came when he played up front on his own so he can clearly play that position perfectly fine and I disagree about when he's most likely going to do something stupid also, was he isolated and frustrated by his team mates when he kicked out against Montenegro? Was he isolated and frustrated by his team mates when he decided to go an elbow McCarthy against Wigan last season? There's no obvious tell tell sign when Rooney's going to let the mist descend and it's certainly not cut and dried bound to happen should he play up front on his own against Spain when the midfield he relies on to provide him with passes are being completely out played.

It's funny you should mention how he did against Barca though as that for me is a classic example of why England would be insane to omit him altogether from the Euro's - completely isolated by a midfield which is being given the run around but managed to fashion one chance and scored, can England really rely on the Darren Bent's of the world to do likewise come the summer?

I've got no idea what England's starting XI will be come the Euro's but I can almost guarantee when they go crashing out it'll be because of the same tactical **** up's it always is. Given that 4-4-2 is dead at International level though the obvious thing would be to go for a 4-3-3 with Rooney upfront flanked by Young & one other (Downing, Walcott or maybe even Sturridge/Welbeck)

Ireland? Come on now :p

Ireland? it would be worse to get knocked out by Italy atm they are truly appalling ha

OT: I personally think it's a bit harsh, it was a straight red but the manner in which he accepted the red was testament to him having a "red mist" moment. There was no decent towards the referee, he helped the player up and reacted how players should when they get a red card. It should be a 2 game ban.

Bit like jail where you get a sentence but can it lightened for good behaviour afterwards :D

Sorry, they aren't better than Rooney..... because you say so? Rooney works hard, but technically no, I don't rate much of what he does. He's effective but he's a battering ram not a technician. Do you see him doing back heels and turns, insanely high quality through balls or crossing, is his tackling spot on. I can't think of ANYTHING he's the best at in the premier league.

For England, best passer, Lampard/Wilshire and possibly Young, best crosser, hands down young, best tackler, can't quite decide tbh, I think Ashley Cole, considering most of his tackles come tracking back and at huge pace, is actually excellent as he's rarely if ever tackling from the ideal position.

Best finisher, Bent, and yes the last bit was hilarious, do you really think Bent can be relied on, well yes, for significantly worse teams he's matched Rooney in scoring, he frequently scores against Utd, City, Pool and the top teams, he'll frequently score his only shot or chance of the game to get vital points, he's FAR more reliable to score the only chance of the game than Rooney, massively so. Its not about that though, a better passer, better player to hold up the ball would have helped his team get more chances, keep the ball in Barca's half and stop Barca scoring as many, Barca didn't have 2 more shots than Utd, they had almost 20 more chances and only scored 2 more.

EDIT:- Rooney's 26 goals in the league came from 182 shots, Bents 24 came from, 115 shots, Rooney got 58 on target, Bent got 55 on target, who will score more from less chances, Bent, very very obviously.

If you have 4 shots against your oppositions 22, in 19 out of 20 games you will lose. Playing someone else who kept posession and created more chances and you might have changed it to 6-7 chances, but held onto it long enough to hold Barca to 15 chances, in that situation you would win a lot more frequently, even if still the vast under dogs.

Best penalty taker.... Young, best corner taker, Young, best free kick taker, Young.

Sorry but what is Rooney the best at, being slightly fat but still fast and a battering ram, sure. As for his best year coming as a lone striker, its funny, he started 32 games in the league and got 26 goals, or the vast majority of his goals in the league, Berbatov started 24 games and was a sub in 9 others. So for well over half the season Rooney did infact NOT play as a lone striker AT ALL. A huge number of his goals came because they had someone who could control the ball, hold it up, pass it on and create a chance and Rooney would be ahead of him to tap it in. England need a "Berbatov" to be the second striker to bring the ball down, make the right choices, play it in perfectly to a winger or an onrunning midfielder, who will create a chance.

Rooney plays that role at the moment for England, and frankly, he plays it pretty badly, and if we were to drop Bent and push Rooney upfront on his own, he would flounder badly, he's absolutely not known for holding it up and waiting for support and passing them in perfectly. Likewise, if you went for a 4-5-1 as I said with Bent upfront, there are seriously better actual midfielders you would want to start ahead of him.

Rooney's issue is still, 6-7 years after he became a top player, hasn't picked a single position to stick to and improve in, one season he's left wing, another he's mostly a tap in artist upfront, another he wants to be Scholes/Lampard, then he's a striker again, then he's a support striker.

You don't know from one game to the next where he'll try and play, how he'll try and play or if he'll do something stupid. Bent, he'll be a great striker upfront on his own every game because thats all he does. Lampard as a midfielder getting into the box to support is excellent, when he's played in a different role to club, deeper and more defensive, not as good.
