Red arrow incident

Yeah it looks like our flights are grounded too. Ill find out more when I start work tonight, but obviously cant say anything I learn on here.

Terrible tragedy though, I work the line on Tornados and I see off jets daily, the idea of this happening on ground is quite shocking, If it was during a see off procedure the liney must be seriously traumatised :(

Must be nice working that close to Tonkas. What sort of things are you responsible for on the ground? I imagine this is sort of like the pushback guys in civil aviation that advise on ground equipment removal, doors and seals closed, then 2 good starts etc. Is it similar idea for military?

From the pics I've seen it looks like it was, you've got to feel for the liney(s) out there at the time as well as the family and the Reds in general.

I assume the 'lineys' on the Reds are all experienced lads rather than young AMMs, so hopefully they'll be better able to cope that one of the young lads you get on the sqns, but that said, it goes without saying nobody would be able to just shake it off.

The 'phoons aren't affected by the grounding, but it has been very quiet here today, and rightly so.

Nah as far as Im aware Lineys on Reds will be AMMs just like myself and others on other squadrons.

The job basically involves basic aircraft servicing, before flight, afterflight, turn-around (quick service between flights), hot pits (refuelling with engine still running and crew in), cold pit (engines off, aircrew handing over to another aircrew)

If it happened during a see off procedure then if anything like my job, I would strap the aircrew into the cockpit, remove safety pins from the canopy, ensure the apu/engine and whatnot starts, controls move correctly, get the aircraft good to go, close canopy, ensure they remove their seat pins.. then remove chocks and marshal the aircraft out.

Its the seatpin point where my worry would be, I have no idea what happened yesterday but the seat pins are the very last thing to come out before the Aircraft taxis.

The canopy should jettison and the seat should eject unobstructed.

RIP :(

It was on the see off, the 5 lineys seeing off the 5 ship where 5 AMM's, 2 Cpl Line Walkers, 1 Snec and a Squipper.

2 of the above where stood right next to the jet when it went off and both where blew away by the blast.

From what I've been told, the seat activated, he went up and came down without a chute and all of the above saw it.

Rather grim, R.I.P Sean. :(

Not a good start at all to 2012 for the team, the 4 other guys in the 5 ship where new guys. (New Red 1,2,3,4).

R.I.P Flt Lt Sean Cunningham. I feel very sorry for him, working hard to get to the position he was in then this tragic event occurring! Very sad.

That is quite simply ****. Hope all those involved are dealing as best as can be expected.

And here's hoping nobody was at fault and it was just one of those things.

RIP.

Out of curiosity, why would you eject on the ground?

Once the pilot is strapped in and the canopy closed it takes a while to get back out if an emergency occurs. A zero zero seat allows the pilot an escape option.

Bad times for the Red Arrows with two incidents close together. RIP to the pilot.

Must have been horrid falling to your dath like that :(

RIP

Many reasons.

Landing gone wrong, fire/explosions, being able to gracefully bring an aircraft into the deck with a controlled crash landing and still being able to punch out, your ordnance just decided to fall of the racks on the deck.....use your imagination? :D
