Want an extra 5GB storage with Dropbox?

This is very quick and easy if you just use a big movie or similar as you don't have to upload the full contents.

I had a 6gb movie on a pen drive, plugged it in, told it to upload, and it added on all my extra space within about a minute, I didn't have to really upload hardly anything. Then I just deleted the uploading movie from my dropbox folder, job done, took about 5 mins in total.

so do you have to fully upload the files or not?

i have a total of 6.5gb now, started off with 2.5gb due to using a referral and sending one out, this has now increased to 6.5gb but doesnt seem to get any higher even though i am still entitled to a further 1gb of space, guess ill just have to leave these 1gb+ files uploading overnight and see what happens

got 8.13gb of space now so have gained my full 5gb, I am sure you don't have to upload all the file as well, i just cancelled an upload of over 2gb and it gave my my final 1gb of space. also go to www.dropbox.com/free for a little bit more space

Still can't seem to be able to get dropbox to recognise anything, keeps saying no new pictures found :(

I had the same problem, I saw that the solution is to find the PreviouslyAcquired.db file (link).

After finding that I didnt have this file (Windows 7 Ultimate x64) I used my other pc which had the bonus of adding space by installing the client to an extra computer.

I haven't had the good fortune of Bigsy, three hours into uploading and no sign of any extra space yet. It's possible the extra space will turn up when the new files push dropbox over 100%. Or I've done something wrong.

Isn't dropbox quite expensive? You can get 20gb vps servers at 100mbit for 6 euros. And if you just want ftp you could get loads for that price a month.

In short, yes. I pay $10 (£6.50) a month for a 200gb VPS, $10 is the price for 50gb with dropbox. Dropbox is convenient, and hosted on S3, so is probably worth the premium.

edit: Oh, right. Delete the files after importing, but partway through uploading. I now have the extra space, without waiting for the upload to finish. All good :)

Oddly my space didn't seem to show up until after I'd deleted the uploaded files from my dropbox account.

Protip. From an elevated command prompt:
fsutil file createnew photo.jpg 5368709120

5gb jpg file filled with zeros, takes seconds to upload ;).

Thanks, I didn't have the file either but managed to get Windows to create one after importing a photo from my phone. Still had issues with it recognising the pen drive so stumbled upon this article which had some great info. The DCIM thing worked for me and I am now enjoying a nice 9GB of space.

There's also a link in that article to an archive which will give you 4.5GB~ of blank files if others are struggling to get the full space. Took less than 10 minutes to extract them and import them into dropbox. Cancelled the upload and voila!

Did it prompt you from when you plugged your USB stick in, or did you drag drop the file to the Camera Uploads folder?

Dropbox didnt do anything when I plugged in my pen drive...

Anyone having trouble with autoplay not showing, right click your pen drive/sd card/whatever in explorer and select 'Open autoplay'. The dropbox import tool should be on the list to select.

I'm SO doing that lol

I have no way of recording any videos in HD so creating a load of 500mb files would take me forever lol
