Forgot how bad job searching was :(

Got a job at last :D:D:D:D:D

Went for an interview and didn't get it :( about a week later te company rang me and said they wanted to make a new role in the business just for me :D 2 weeks later they have rang me with a job offer and I start in 2 weeks! :D

Ideal job and exactly what I was looking for, soooooooo chuffed :D

TEN years! Through an agency? You'd do one after a few months and get something permanent surely?

easier said than done, especially in the current climate and lack of jobs. also dont forget the state of the low pay jobs market as a whole means its the same all the way across it with agencies paying min wage and companys not taking on full time staff.

well im off to yet another meeting at the work programme with my advisor, another wasted half hour apointment but it at least gets me out of the house.

the way things are going i guess il have to try and forge ahead at doing something myself from home see if i can make a bit of money rather than working for min wage.

What would you do in this situation:

You have applied for two positions in similar roles, at two different companies, in different industries.

Both companies invite you for an interview. It turns out that they both have offices based in the same small business centre/office block.

Congratulations mate :)

Chuffed for ya!

I'm currently in a decent, well paying job (IT sysadmin) but the job is going a bit stale and our parent company is taking more away from us; plus I'm getting more and more dragged into 1st line rubbish I'd rather not do.

Therefore I've been keeping an eye out for some jobs in my area just in case something really good crops up. My only issue is - Why are recruitment agencies so technophobic?

I mean, for ***ks sake, I can't dart out of the office every 15mins for recruitment agencies who are just asking to reiterate what I've already mentioned on my CV. Why do they hate emailing? I've asked several times for agencies to email me any questions they have but it's always "Oh no, call me, call me call me!" Even when I'm in meetings all fracking day.

Any recruitment agents on OCUK? Why do they hate email as a primary form of communication?

Because most recruiters are *female lady parts* and *female lady parts* only have lips and no fingers to type with? ;)

I agree I used to find it very annoying. I guess email means you have what they say written down so when they start contradicting themselves, or lying, it's easier to prove them wrong :)

You go to both interviews, if either one asks are you interviewing elsewhere you tell the truth, no harm in that what so ever.

If anything it can stoke the fire a bit to speed things up, I know it's helped me in the past with job offers when a company has known someone else is waiting to make me an offer.

It must just be the particular ones you are dealing with.

I have found that it depends on the company in general but then more specifically the recruiter themselves.

The job I just got (WOOHOOO!!! :D) was handled by a recruitment agency and they were fantastic. No hassle, email when emails were needed, calls when calls were needed, prompt and always backing up their promieses/commitments.

In other circumstances though I have dealt with completely unprofessional ******s who lie, cheat, fail at everything they promise and are just generally useless.

TL;DR, as in the rest of life it depends on those you are dealing with.

Had this issue with a few agencies but in general most of the agencies I have dealt with were more than happy to use email as one of the primary forms of communication since I'm in meetings/unavailable for the majority of the working day.

Time to check myself into this thread,

Recently found out that I'm going to be made redundant :( I serve my last day in just over a week's time (15th). I had a feeling that this was coming as things have been tough for a while. Despite this being the first time I am out of work for nearly 5 years (been with the current company nearly 4 years), I am keeping my hopes up to find new work and with a bit of luck if it's there, finally get into something I really want to do and build a career.

Been hunting around and applying online for jobs in IT like crazy for days and will continue to do so. So we will see.

With regards to applying for Job Seekers, I have had a look around on the DirectGov site but I can't seem to get a solid answer - shall I contact them now to inform them on my redundancy coming up in just over a week's time so I can get prepared and get the ball rolling for applying for Job Seekers or do I have to wait until redundancy day and then contact them / apply for it?

Thanks all - Liam

I did something I feel guilty today. I applied for a company directly on their jobs website, but the next day applied through an agency to the exact same company for the same role.

Because I was applying for almost 20+ positions, so naturally I forgot I have applied to this company before.

Today I've received an e-mail from the agency saying the company is interested in me but I've already applied there directly, so he's going to back out and wished me good luck.

All of sudden I feel bad :(

Think you should start now.

But it isn't so fun being on the JSA. One of my mate was on it and he said he have to go in for a meeting twice a week, 20 minutes each time just to report and give detail to the lady what he has been doing for the past few days. He said it feels kind of degrading.

It is degrading, but at the end of the day, it's free money :p

I think now, you go in for the initial sign up which is a load of toffee quite frankly. Then go in once every week or two I think? To prove you've been looking for jobs. Rinse and repeat.

Luckily I only had to go in the once

I lost my job yesterday which is kind of a bummer. Company basically did the last in-first out sort of thing, and because I was there for nine months I had no grounds for appeal.

It was a great job as well, everyone there were real nice people. The company is struggling and needed to shed staff. :(

Applied for JSA and housing/council tax benefit today but I have a hunch it won't be sustainable. The job hunt isn't going to be pleasant.

Thanks for your reply mate,

I still remember signing on to JSA when I came straight out of college 5 years ago and being on it for just over 3 months, and yeah - it was a ball ache indeed and especially trying to find work. I'm dreading going on it this time.

all the best to you finding work as well :)

Edit - sorry to hear about loosing your job too, KNiVES :(

Liam

I see a lot of people mentioning that they have recently lost their JOB. Should I differentiate a 'job' and 'career' here?

I remember someone once said to me a job is something you do to just earn money, but career is something you plan and build on.

How do you guys who live on your own places manage without employment? It's the first time I'm out of work and living by myself. Does the state give enough that you can afford a roof over your head at least or are the long term unemployed plunged into debt?
